Abstract

Abstract

There were two objectives of the research. The first was to analyze the word ‘scandal’ from textual analysis (micro-level) and sociocultural analysis (macro-level). To analyze the findings, the research made use of Norman Fairclough’s model as the basis of critical discourse analysis. The research was qualitative, which tended to use inductive as the approach. There were 23 informants who participated in the survey and the FGD. They were selected purposively based on their profession and the workplace areas. The data were the four of Fadli Zon’s tweets containing the word ‘scandal’ and its context, which was available in some online media. Research content based on the textual analysis (microanalysis) shows that the text structure is short and directly conveys Fadli Zon’s criticism or negative assumptions toward any policies of government issues. Besides, the macro analysis indicates Fadli Zon has a dominant power to utter the negative judgments toward the government regarding the position in the government structure as one of the leaders in the Indonesian House of Representative. Substantially, the use of specific terms’ scandal’ overall illustrates the negative opinions and indicating declining trust in the policymakers on certain governmental issues. The use of cynicism, sarcasm, and satire styles colors Fadli Zon’s tweets that are also accompanying the overused of ‘scandal’ word. The analysis based on the dimension of discourse practice (micro-level) indicates that using the word ‘scandal’ in Fadli Zon’s tweets is cynical according to the public opinions. The analysis based on the social-cultural practice dimension (macro-level) indicates that Fadli Zon is one Indonesian politician who is often opposed to the Indonesian government policies.

Abstract

The pandemic of COVID-19 has forced the Indonesian government through its Ministry of Education and Culture to implement policies moving conventional classroom to online classroom. The current study is a collective case study consisting of analysis of survey on students’ perceptions of their online learning during the pandemic. Sixty-six students of English Language Education Study Program at Pamane Talino College of Education (STKIP Pamane Talino) were involved. Their perceptions of their online classroom that were recorded through a survey. The recorded perceptions are in terms of students’ participation, accessibility, material and assignment delivery, and the use of e-learning platforms. The results were then summarized into tables and narrative descriptions. The study identified three major obstacles in conducting online learning in English Language Education Study Program at STKIP Pamane Talino: the first is availability and sustainability of internet connection, the second is accessibility of the teaching media, and the last is the compatibility of tools to access the media. The result of the current study suggests that accessibility is still the major factor influencing the success of online learning. Online learning for English Language Education Study Program at STKIP Pamane Talino, and potentially Indonesia in general, requires some more friendly platforms so that students’ participation can be increased. This is especially for students who reside in rural areas with limited internet connections and other support systems

Abstract

This study aims at scrutinizing the register pattern used by the sellers in promoting their goods in the popular Facebook trading group used by people in Ngabang, West Borneo, “Ngabang Jual-Beli”. The group is an ambient representation of language variation used in West Borneo. The register analysis covers the field, tenor, and mode of the discourse. The data analysis encompasses domain, taxonomy, componential, and cultural theme analysis modified by Santosa (2017). The domain covers the kinds of goods being sold. The taxonomy analysis is the three meta functions in the SFL framework. The combined domain and taxonomy in the componential analysis figure out the register pattern in the group. The findings reveal that in the field of discourse, the posted clauses are dominated by the use of the material process, relational identification, and relational attributive process. The material process reflects the experiential meaning of the current activities. Meanwhile, the information of the goods realizes relational identification and relational attributive processes. With respect to the tenor of discourse, there is a tendency for the sellers to use declarative clauses which reflect equal status between the sellers and the customers by considering the minimal social distance. Furthermore, in the mode of discourse, the unmarked topical theme reflects as the majority of the ellipsis subject referring to the sellers. The study implies that the language used in digital trading should consider the participants, the relationship among the participants, and the media used to persuade their target market. Keywords: Facebook trading group, online shop, register, systemic functional linguistics

Abstract

Students' linguistics knowledge, especially on sentence structure, is urgently needed for English Pre-Service teachers as an essential skill. However, English pre-service teachers in a private university in West Kalimantan faced various challenges in learning it. The present study aims to analyze self-reflection journal realization and students' views in English Syntax courses in higher education. This study included 20 English Pre-Service teachers from semester 5 who were enrolled in two classes of the English Syntax course. It utilized a qualitative method and a case study approach. The purposive sampling method was employed to select representative and communicative participants. They wrote self-reflection journals on three topics in the English Syntax syllabus. The result showed that self-reflection journals were useful for the students in evaluating their progress on each topic. Self-reflection journals triggered the students' self-awareness and self-development, which benefited the teaching and learning process. According to the students, they were delighted to evaluate their process and find a new solution for their future learning strategy. Moreover, the present study might provide a new paradigm for the use of self-reflection journals in English Syntax courses other than Writing skills. Future research is recommended to develop the self-reflection journal instrument to gain a more authentic reflection entry.

Abstract

English is a foreign language taught in educational units throughout Indonesia. Therefore, in learning English, of course, students face a variety of challenges. This study aims to discover the challenges students of SDN 14 Sungai Ambawang face in learning English and to identify any factors that influence the challenges students face in learning English. The research method used is qualitative, with a case study research design. Data collection is done through observation, questionnaires, and interviews. Data analysis techniques applied interactive models, including data collection, condensation, display, and drawing and verifying conclusions. This study found that several challenges and factors cause elementary school students to learn English as a foreign language, namely difficulty in understanding, writing, listening, and pronouncing words. The causes include a lack of self-confidence, a lack of support from the neighborhood school, a lack of home support, and a lack of learning facilities. Future research could expand the broader context of English teaching as a compulsory subject.
