Abstract

This study examined the use of teachers’ basic questionings of Sydney Micro Skill (1983) in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). There were nine components of teachers’ basic questionings, namely structuring, focusing, phrasing, redirecting, distributing, reacting, pausing, prompting, and changing the level of cognitive demand. The objectives of this study were to describe the types of basic questionings, explain the teachers’ ways in keeping the students active to respond their questions and explain why the teachers use those teachers’ basic questionings. It was a qualitative research which was also supported by quantitative data. It used audio visual, observation/field note and interview to collect data. The result showed that most of English teachers applied those nine components to build a good classroom interaction and the dominant was distributing. The teachers had four ways in keeping the students active to respond their questions; they used questions randomly, interesting medium while delivering the questions, active in motivating the students, and promoted a group discussion. Moreover, the teachers also had reasons why they used those teachers’ basic questionings, such as to find out the students’ attitudes, determine the students’ understanding, and to motivate and appreciate the students.

Abstract

Teaching grammar has been one of the most challenging issues in Indonesia. Teacher-centered approach and the lack of students‟ motivation are among the factors limiting students to master grammar. The study aims at investigating the effectiveness of project-based writing toward students‟ mastery of grammar based on their motivation level. The study used a 2X2 factorial research design involving 60 students in two groups in one of high schools in Landak Regency, West Kalimantan. The data were collected through test and questionnaires. SPSS 20 was used for analyzing the data. The finding reveals that project-based writing is effective toward students‟ mastery of grammar. Besides, motivation level is also effective toward students‟ grammatical accuracy. Lastly, the analysis of variance shows that there is no interaction among students‟ motivation, techniques, and students‟ grammar with the level of sig. value at 0.821. The study suggests that teachers must be able to consider the presence of both a project and motivation in teaching and learning, especially to teach grammatical accuracy.

This is a quasi-experimental study. The population of this study was the ninth graders of MTs Negeri 1 Landak and the sample was the students of IX-A and IX-B. The method of collecting data was test and field note, while t-test was used to analyze the data. The analysis of writing test uses the components of writing namely organization, grammar and mechanics. The result shows that the students? average of experimental group is higher that control group and the result of t-test gains that tvalue  > ttable = 7.05 > 1.99.  In addition, the use of media also could improve the students? writing ability. Finally, this media is effective to use in writing procedure text and the use of media would be useful for teachers and students.

Abstract

Language as a means of communication has an important role in delivering a message. Moreover, it is related to speech acts the speakers use. Each utterance has a different meaning to understand, and that is the job of the hearers and readers to interpret the meaning. Speech acts have three different distinct levels: locutionary (the actual words uttered), illocutionary (the force or intention behind the words), and perlocutionary (the effect of the illocution on the hearer). The researchers chose the “Oliver Twist” script as the data to analyse. Some of the scripts were taken and classified into the three levels of speech act: locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary. This research aimed to describe the three distinct levels of speech acts that are shown in the “Oliver Twist” script and to examine how speech acts are used in the “Oliver Twist” script. The researchers used a descriptive analysis technique in which the data were taken from some scripts which contain three distinct levels of speech acts. The researchers then identified the utterances and classified how they performed what the speaker meant. The result shows that some utterances have three distinct levels of speech act, such as I want some more, You must be hungry, A polite boy, Can we start the game and Because he is a street child. Since speech acts are essential to indicate what a speaker means, English learners should enrich themselves by understanding the function of speech acts and their distinct levels.

Hasil observasi awal yang dilakukan peneliti menemukan bahwa kemampuan penggunaan komputer para guru masih rendah. Meskipun begitu mereka sangat antusias dengan program ini. Motivasi mereka belajar komputer sangat tinggi. Peningkatan kemampuan penggunaan komputer terlihat jelas dari praktek mereka mendesain presentasi di PowerPoint dan Prezi. Peningkatan yang paling signifikan adalah penggunaan Microsoft Excel untuk administrasi sekolah.
