Abstract

The level of scientific publications of Indonesian students at the international level is still very minimal. Even when compared to Malaysia and Thailand, Indonesia is still lagging behind. The Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education targets that in 2019 Indonesia will reach 30,000 international publications. Therefore, students' interest in writing must be increased, especially writing based on sources. Therefore, this study would like to find students' perspectives and perceived challenges in writing based on sources. This research was based on a case study.  The research involved 68 students from one of the state universities in Bandung, and it analyzed 20 selected scientific papers written by students. The instruments for data collection included questionnaire and observation. The results of this study found that 59% of students perceived that writing scientific papers is very difficult. The students found it difficult to find suitable sources for writing material and develop their ideas. They tended to use articles as the sources from the internet whose originality is unclear. One reason this happens was because 80% of students did not know where to find or get indexed journals to use as references for their writing. In addition, many students also preferred not to use journals that were majorly English-based because of their limitation of English skills. The implication is that students should be given further understanding of how to access journals and use reference sources in writing. It is expected that every lecturer will give more source-based writing assignments so that the ability of students to write and develop ideas based on existing sources can be further improved.

Abstract

The representation of cultural values in textbooks is crucial to be examined because learning a foreign language is bound with the culture. Although previous research has quite extensively investigated this issue, much is yet to be explored in the context of Korean as a foreign language learning. This study aims to address the gap by investigating how cultural values are represented in the Korean as a foreign language (KFL) textbook, published by The Korea Foundation for Indonesians. A critical discourse analysis (CDA) approach was employed to analyze the data. The findings exhibited the representation of cultural values in four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The introduction to the Korean language could be given through cultural recognition. Among the identified cultural values in the textbook, the representation of showing respect to creative products or the results of local culture was more evident than the other categories, followed by showing respect to cultural differences from various ethnic or religious groups and merging with nature and life. However, the representation category of showing respect to indigenous people’s culture was not seen in the textbook. This suggests that the textbook is intended to foster the students’ multicultural awareness in learning Korean as a foreign language.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengungkap dan mendeksripsikan representasi sosial masyarakat yang tergambar dalam naskah film Parasite karya Bong Joon Ho yang diterbitkan pada tahun 2019 dengan menggunakan pendekatan semiotika lima kode Roland Barthes. Representasi adalah gambaran dari kehidupan nyata masyarakat dalam suatu karya sastra. Metode yang digunakan adalah penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Teknik analisis data menggunakan model dari Miles Huberman yakni, reduksi data, penyajian data, penarikan kesimpulan dan verifikasi. Data yang digunakan berupa leksia-leksia yang terdapat dalam naskah film Parasite karya Bong Joon Ho. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian dalam naskah film Parasite terdapat 47 data leksia yang berbeda dan kemudian dikategorikan menjadi lima kode, dengan rincian sebagai berikut: 16 kode hermeneutik, 20 kode semik, 21 kode simbolik, 9 kode proairetik, dan 7 kode kultural. Berdasarkan dari sistem kode tersebut, ditemukan bahwa terdapat bentuk representasi sosial masyarakat dari film Parasite. Adanya kesenjangan sosial diperlihatkan melalui dua keluarga yang memiliki latar belakang berbeda melalui dialog dan narasi pada film. Sistem ekonomi kapitalisme mengakibatkan melebarnya kesenjangan sosial dan mengakibatkan kemiskinan terus terjadi. Selanjutnya adanya perbedaan kelas sosial di dalam struktur sosial masyarakat mengakibatkan adanya konflik sesama kelas dan antar kelas sosial. Di dalam film Parasite, digambarkan bahwa kelas atas memiliki kuasa untuk menjadikan kelas bawah sebagai alat untuk mendapatkan keuntungan sebesar-besarnya.

Abstract

The advantages of incorporating technology-enhanced flipped learning in English classrooms are nothing new. However, the impact of incorporating the learning method on the occurrence and decline of students’ characters has not much been revealed. This study aims to fill the void by exploring the students’ perceptions of whether flipped learning and the use of technology in learning English can instill character education. Eighty-four (n=84) Indonesian undergraduate EFL students participated in this study. A 22-item questionnaire with a checklist and open-ended types was filled out after the students completed a 16-week course. While percentages were obtained from the checklist responses, codes and categories were generated from the open-ended responses. The results revealed that flipped learning could instill character values of responsibility, independence, and curiosity. The in-class group discussion was considered as the most contributing activity to the instillment of character values. Character values of religiosity, patriotism, and nationalism were less occurred among the students. Furthermore, the use of ICT-based learning media such as YouTube, WhatsApp, the Internet, and mobile phone could instill character values of independence, creativity, teamwork, activeness, and criticality. However, few students perceived that such learning media could influence them to commit cheating or become less concentrated during group discussion. This study emphasizes the teacher’s roles in designing learning activities oriented to developing the students’ English language skills and character.

Abstract

This study discusses the language disorders found in the video요즘 육아 금쪽같은 내새끼 (yeojeum yuka geumjjokgateun naesekki) ‘These days, my child who is like a golden child’ episode 59 in 2021 on youtube channel 채널에이방송영상 (chaenoleibangsongyongsang). The purpose of this study is to find out what language disorders exist in the subject and how to deal with them. This study uses descriptive qualitative methods to describe language disorders that occur in the subject. The data collection technique used is the simak catat technique. Technique simak catat conducted by researchers to obtain data from videos, then data related to language disorders, especially autism will be recorded for further research. The results show that in fact the speech delay experienced by Jian is part of the impact of the autism aspect on Jian. Then, detecting early age development is very important, because it can help mothers or families to find out if there are obstacles in early age development and prevent delays in handling or misdiagnosis.

Abstract

The process of conveying meaning between two languages is called translation. This qualitative research study aims to depict changes in form and meaning during the translation of subtitles from the Korean variety show "Battle Trip (배틀 트립) episode 14," titled "Trip to Bandung," as it transitions from Korean to Indonesian. Additionally, this study delves into the underlying factors that contribute to these translation shifts. This research used a theory of translation shift and translation meaning shift. The data were collected by jotting down the phrases, clauses, or sentences in the subtitles that contained form and meaning shifts and classifying them into an analysis table, based on the type of translation shift. The results showed that from 147 units of analysis, there were 167 translation shifts. Almost all types of form shifts were found in this study. The most commonly occurring type of translation shift was category shifts, especially the structure and unit shifts. This was due to the differences in grammatical rules, sentence structure, and language units between the Korean and Indonesian languages. Meanwhile, the concept of meaning shift is categorized into two distinct groups: generic-to-specific transitions and shifts stemming from divergent cultural perspectives. The most dominant meaning shift was the generic-to-specific category because the translator used equivalents that were not too close but the meaning conveyed did not change. In addition, the difficulties in finding the close equivalents due to the differences in the cultural background were another factor in the occurrences of translation shifts.

Abstract

Korean students and beginner-level Korean learners often use harsh language because they often learn from shows that use coarse language. Therefore, this study of euphemism aimed to describe (1) variations of euphemisms in the form of words or sentences, taboos, cultural traits, social discrimination, and negative situations (2) the functions of using euphemisms in the book Ancient Korean Indonesian Stories 1. This research is a qualitative descriptive research. The data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and pulling a conclusion or verification. Data validity was obtained from data triangulation. The data were analyzed based on the theory of the form and function of euphemism by Kim Mi Hyeong. This research shows the following results. First, the euphemisms of words 86%, and sentences 14%. Forms of euphemisms based on taboo is 71%, (2) social discrimination 10%, (3) negative situations 19%, and zero data were found in the form of cultural traits. Second, the euphemism function (1) the self-protection function is 9%, (2) the purification function is 43%, which is the most dominant function contained in the data in the object of this study. Abstract

The same is true of the Indonesian translation of a Korean short story. Undoubtedly, the process is not simple. This study aims to find out the use of translation techniques, the use of translation methods, and the application of translation techniques and methods used in equivalents of the short story Is That So? I’m a Giraffe by Min-Gyu Park and using Molina and Albir's theory of translation techniques, Newmark's theory of translation method, and Nida and Taber's equivalence theory. This study used a descriptive qualitative method by analyzing the words, phrases, clauses, and sentences contained in the short story as the data source. The note-taking technique was also used. The results of the data analysis showed that there were ten translation techniques and eight translation methods used in translating the text. The modulation technique was the most frequently used technique with 172 occurrences, and the free translation method was the most common method with 176 occurrences. Based on these results, the translation of the short story is included in the dynamic equivalence which is more concerned with the meaning of the target language.

Abstract

Politeness in speech acts has been of great importance in social interaction to maintain the interpersonal relationship between the interlocutors. Nevertheless, research on how politeness strategies are conveyed in a particular speech act in a contemporary literary work is still lacking. This study aims to determine the forms of positive politeness strategies in directive speech acts with the requesting function. A descriptive qualitative was employed. The data were taken from directive speech with the function of requests contained in the television drama “School 2013”. A literature study method with listening and note-taking techniques was employed to analyze the data. This research particularly referred to Brown and Levinson’s theory of politeness strategies. The results showed that positive politeness sub-strategy 12 (include both Speaker and Hearer in the activity) were more widely used, namely 31 data (37%). The contributing factor is the frequent use of this utterance by the teacher to the students and speakers to their peers. By using positive politeness strategies, the speakers can show a sense of familiarity or a greater sense of care. It gives the impression that the speakers are on the same boat each other, and the request becomes of great importance for both interlocutors.

Abstract

Pembelajaran saat pandemi menjadi titik balik guru mulai memanfaatkan teknologi secara intens dalam kegiatan pembelajaran, Khususnya dalam pengembangan media pembelajaran. Dalam kegiatan pembelajaran pascapandemi, siswa belum bisa secara maksimal hadir di kelas. hal tersebut menjadi sebuah tantangan tersendiri bagi guru dalam memaksimalkan kegiatan pembelajaran. penerapan model flipped learning dapat menjadi solusi yang baik bagi guru dan siswa. Oleh karena itu, para guru harus memiliki literasi digital yang mumpuni agar dapat beradaptasi dengan sistem pembelajaran yang baru ini. Tujuan dari pelaksanaan PkM ini difokuskan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan guru dalam menggunakan teknologi berbasis ICT dalam mengembangkan media pembelajaran serta mengimplementasikannya di kelas. Hasil yang didapatkan dari kegiatan pelatihan ini, guru mampu mengembangkan beberapa jenis media yang belum pernah digunakan seperti membuat infografis dengan menggunakan Canva, membuat video animasi dengan menggunakan animaker dan membuat tes menggunakan Wordwall. Melalui pelatihan ini, kesiapan dan kapasitas guru SMK dalam mengembangkan media pembelajaran berbasis ICT di dalam flipped learning dapat meningkat.
