It also elaborates the teaching media and method that they need to support them to do teachingpractice.  The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative. To get the data, the researchers interviewthe visual impairments, the two volunteers who become their peer assistant them during learning process inthe university, and the lecturer who becomes the advisor of the visually impaired students. Besides, observation is also important to know the application of teaching practice in their real class. The observationis done by recording the teaching activity conducted by the visually impaired students. The results of theinterview and the observation are used to formulate the needs of the visually impaired students in teachingprocess in the real school. This study gives benefit not only for the students in preparing their teachingpractice, but also for the institution to accommodate the needs of the visually impaired students for theirteaching process.

Abstract

Since 2018, there are 2.449 pre-service teachers (PSTs) prepared to be professional teachers. In Indonesia, those PSTs are enrolled in the professional development program called PPG. To become a teacher, they have to obey teacher professionalism regulated in the Law Number 14 Year 2005 explaining, among others, that teacher roles, teacher competencies, and teacher professional development programs are the important aspects in determining teacher professionalism. This research aims to know their perspectives towards teacher professionalism. The method used was the qualitative research method and a narrative inquiry research design. The subjects were ten pre-service English teachers who have different background of studies, experiences, and even interests in becoming teachers. An adapted semi-structured interview guideline from Yuwono (2008) and FGD guideline developed from 4 previous studies and the Law Number 14 Year 2005 were employed to collect the data. To avoid bias data, triangulation of source and methodology was conducted. The results show that the PSTs thought that it has to be more flexible and practical. They also revealed that teacher roles, teacher competencies and teacher professional development program are the determiners of teacher professionalism as what is explained in the law. However, they considered that teacher roles can be supportive aspect towards teacher competencies performed in the classroom. Thus, teacher competencies are the most dominant factor that can influence and determine teacher professionalism. Further, professional teacher certification consisting various professional development programs is needed to improve their competencies.

Abstract

Reading is regarded as an essential activity in language learning, providing a valuable source of information, an exciting activity, a tool of communication, and a way to enhance one's knowledge. Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) is implemented in reading classes to enhance students' reading comprehension. The present study aimed to find out the correlation between students’ perceptions of Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) projects and their reading achievement. The participants of the study were 165 students of the second semester batch 2022/2023 taking a Reading Course in one of public universities in East Java Indonesia. The current study employed correlational design and the data were collected through a questionnaire consisting of four dimensions with 20 items adapted from Fan (2010). The dimensions were students’ general perceptions of CSR instruction, perceptions of implementation procedures of CSR, and views on their learning attitudes in CSR. The data on the students’ reading achievement were obtained through their TOEIC reading test, CSR project, midterm test, and final test scores. The data taken from students' perceptions of CSR and reading achievement were analyzed through Pearson Correlation coefficient. The result shows that the correlation between students’ perceptions of CSR and their reading achievement are highly significant. CSR encourages students to get involved actively in reading activities and increase their critical thinking to comprehend texts. Such experiences are beneficial for them which affect their perceptions of CSR towards their reading achievement.

Abstract

The intensive reading module's instruction underscores the need to change based on the new curriculum guidelines, outcome-based education (OBE), which concentrates on student-centered learning. Based on this research’s grand theory, this can be achieved by investigating the teaching activity's process and students’ individual learning beliefs. This research aimed to analyze these factors as a part of need analysis. The study used a mixed-method approach. The data were collected using questionnaires, interviews, and a module analysis checklist based on OBE principles. The respondents comprised 164 third and fourth-year Indonesian students who took an intensive reading class and one lecturer who taught parallel intensive reading classes. The data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. The study results showed that students have sophisticated epistemic beliefs in learning this course, and there is a significant correlation between the proposed reading strategy and students’ epistemic beliefs. Therefore, as the new reading strategy proposed, CSR should be implemented appropriately. Moreover, the findings revealed that the intensive reading classes did not apply the appropriate reading strategy that aligns with students’ learning beliefs and OBE principles in its implementation. In addition, students showed positive attitudes toward the proposed reading strategy. Furthermore, the module analysis indicated several poor indications that should be changed to meet the OBE principles and the student’s learning needs. These findings are the basis for developing the module analysis based on the needs of students. Due to the study’s scope and limitations, further research is recommended.
