Abstract

In Balinese people, there are allots of folklores that scattered in the society which they call Satua Bali. Narrowly, satua Bali is a story that spread out from generation to generation and words of mouth, it is not known who the creator as well. Meanwhile, in the broad sense, satua Bali is derived from the work of authors, whether it is use Balinese language or ancient Javanese language. There are many satua Bali still survive, one of them is satua Pan Balang Tamak. Pan Balang Tamak is the figure who has very clever character and he does not want to be lost by the villager. Because of his cleverness, the villagers and even the king hate him. And, the attempted to deceive him, but all of their efforts were in vain. Many moral values can be learnt from the story of Pan Balang Tamak, that we are as individual as members of the public should not attempt to cheat, or deceive others. And, the brightness brain that we owned should be used to help others. Data was taken from the story which its existence in society, namely satua Pan Balang Tamak. Then, the data is collected by means of written discourse according to topic above. The method suitable for the study which has written language is a method refers to advanced technique such as technical note (Sudaryanto, 1985:26 1986: 33). Then, the result of data analysis technique use distributional method which works within the scope of language itself without linking it with outside matters.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research aims to analyze the relationship of synonym meaning found in Bali language at Undisan, Tembuku district, Bangli Regency. Qualitative analysis was used to explain the result of findings from six respondents who lived in this village. Generally, language variation of synonym developed because of the contact between languages (Bali, Indonesia and English) in the society and their occupation. The synonymy of word or phrase in a sentence found in Bali language were compared with the use other part of Bali for their similarity of meaning or difference depend on their use by referring to the dictionary of Bali-Indonesia-English and information from the society. The purpose is to identify the similarities or differences of meaning found in the daily conversation synonymy of intra-lexical items, formal or informal languages used by adults or children. The study was descriptively analyzed by using qualitative approach based on datas finding in the location using observation method from the respondents to search detail of information required. Relation of meaning analyzed based on the finding through observation and contact involvement method with the respondents.   Key words: lexical, meaning relationship, and synonym

Abstract

This research is titled “The Illocutionary Acts and Politeness Strategies of Character in a novel entitled Supernova: Akar by Dewi Lestari”. The aim of this research is to describe the types of illocutionary acts and politeness strategies of character in a novel entitled Supernova: Akar. The theories used in this research are the theory of illocution act stated by Searle and politeness strategies by Brown and Levinson. The method used at the data collection is observation assisted by the technique of record. In the stage of analysis, the method used is contextual. At the stage of results analysis, formal and informal method are used. In the novel Supernova: Akar, it was found five types of illocutions that are assertive, directive, expressive, commissive, and declaration. There are eleven data which are assertive, sixteen data which are directive, twelve data which are expressive, four data which are commissive, and two data which are declaration. This research revealed five types of politeness strategies that are bald on-record stategies, possitive politeness stategies, negative politeness stategies, off-record strategies, and silence strategies. There are five data which are bald on-record strategies, three data which are possitive politeness strategies, two data which are negative politeness strategies, three data which are off-record strategies, and two data which are silence strategies.

Abstract

Communicative competence has been the goal teaching of a second or foreign language. In acquiring the language, speakers of language also acquire the rules of knowledge and choose the speech acts when communicating with others. This study aimed to investigate the act of request strategies and request perspectives produced by the student of The International Institute of Tourism and Business Denpasar. There are fifty students’ involved in the study with intermediate level in their English proficiency. The data is collected with a written Discourse Completion Test (DCT) which has ten request situations. Soshana Blum Kulka and Olshtain’s (1984) theory is used to categorize the speech acts produce in analyzing data. The result of the project showed that most of the students use internal modification and the number of students external modification in their speech acts.

Abstract

Bahasa Bali memiliki dua dialek utama, yaitu dialek Bali Dataran (DBD) dan dialek Bali Aga (DBA). DBD digunakan di daerah dataran Pulau Bali termasuk daerah perkotaan seperti Kota Denpasar, dan Kabupaten Badung. Sebaliknya DBA biasanya digunakan oleh masyarakat yang ada di daerah pegunungan, terutama daerah pegunungan Kintamani, Buleleng, Pulau Nusa Penida, dan Karangasem. Desa Sembiran merupakan salah satu desa Bali Aga yang ada di Bali. Desa Sembiran terletak di Desa Sembiran, Kecamatan Tejakula, Kabupaten Buleleng. Seperti kebanyakan bahasa Bali Aga, bahasa Bali Aga dialek Sembiran sangat berbeda dengan dialek bahasa Bali dataran atau yang lazim disebut dengan bahasa Bali Kapara. Dialek bahasa Bali Aga memiliki struktur dan fungsi bahasa tersendiri yang berbeda jauh dengan bahasa Bali Daratan. Perbedaan antara DBD dan DBA terlihat dari (1) variasi kosakata, (2) fonologi (termasuk pendistribusian bunyi vokal), (3) anggah ungguhing basa (bahasa halus dan bahasa kasar), serta (4) kosakata (Bawa, 1983). Yang paling jelas perbedaannya adalah pada dialek yang dipergunakan oleh masyarakat penggunanya. Sekadar diketahui bahwa, dalam DBA tidak dikenal adanya bahasa halus, tetapi yang ada hanya bahasa kasar. Kata Kunci: Dialek, morfologi bahasa Bali, bahasa Bali Aga.

Abstract

This study aims to see the politeness of Indonesian in a printed daily newspaper published in Bali, namely the daily Tribun Bali which presents a page of a column called "Smart Traveler" that discusses tourism objects in Bali. In this study, two points were researched, namely the form of politeness and the form of Indonesian politeness based on the principle of politeness (Leech, 1993). Data obtained naturally by reading the daily Tribun Bali, especially the tourism column "Smart Traveler". Then the data is coded according to the function of the Indonesian language, especially in the field of pragmatics concerning the principle of politeness, and transcribed on the data card. The data then were analyzed using two aspects, namely, first, the data were analyzed to determine linguistic elements such as phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics in a predetermined time. Second, the data were analyzed and presented descriptively, then the results obtained were viewed from a theoretical perspective to find out why that was all that happened. In analyzing the data, the distributional method is used, which is working within the scope of the language itself without connecting things outside it.

Abstract

This study aims to discover the increase in students' ability to write essays in English. It is a class action research that administered the EGRA technique in the learning process. This study involved two classes, namely the control class and the experimental class as the research sample. The qualitative descriptive method was used in analyzing the data. The data analyzed are presented in graphs and tables and then described qualitatively. Several theories are used in this study, such as error analysis, writing descriptive text, and EGRA techniques. The pre-test results showed the highest grammatical error score of control class results was 5.1, while the lowest score of students' grammatical errors was 2.8. After getting learning actions with conventional methods, there was a decrease in grammatical errors, the highest score was 3.4, while the lowest was 1.8. Meanwhile, the pre-test result of the experiment class showed the highest error score was 6.6, and the lowest score was 1.2. After the treatment administered with the EGRA technique, there is a decrease in grammatical errors, the highest score is 3.3, and the lowest score is 1.6. With the application of the EGRA technique in classroom learning, the student's grammatical ability increases, and students are more active and enjoyable in the learning process.

Abstract

The current development of technology has been instantly changing the whole society with the easy access for searching information through the internet. Using media support is a consideration to increase activities of learning and adapting the development of this era. The English learning desire creativity for teaching the students as their target goal. This research aims to analyze the meaning of the terms related to science agricultural technology by implementing Internet Based-Learning for students in the Department of Food Technology, including their translation. It was conducted with mixed methods (qualitative and quantitative). by giving guidance to first-year semester on how they could use the WebCorp media to search articles. Then, students instructed to find the translation and understanding of the meaning in each of the terms. This search engine is a machine that compiles Bing or big data capacity and collected as corpus. The texts can be found in various types and sources on the internet. The discussion of problems in the study covers description of understanding the meaning search for terms related to agricultural technology, evaluating parameter of ability to search meaning through internet based-learning by using WebCorp media and strategies implementation to learn English, mainly meaning related to agricultural technology. It showed that there were 47 terms equivalence based on their English terms meaning and translation of Indonesian related to agricultural technology, meanwhile, 7 were found inequivalence for their meanings and text chosen. So, 87% of their results relevant to the agricultural technology but 13% were not connected with the specification of terms and meaning. The students understood how to use the media of searching and gave experience to them.

Abstract

The study aims to discover the students’competency in writing text particularly business letters in English. The study is tried to find out the cohesion devices used by the students’. The participants were the six semester of the Tourism and Business Institut. The number of participant were 50 students. They have got several treatment how to write business letter in English. After the treatment, the researcher collect and analyse data. Qualitative method is used in analysing data. The result shown several types of cohesion applied in students’ writing such as grammatical cohesion; pronoun, substitution, conjunction and lexical cohesion; synonimy, antonimy, and superordinate.
