Abstract

ABSTRACT This research aims to analyze the relationship of synonym meaning found in Bali language at Undisan, Tembuku district, Bangli Regency. Qualitative analysis was used to explain the result of findings from six respondents who lived in this village. Generally, language variation of synonym developed because of the contact between languages (Bali, Indonesia and English) in the society and their occupation. The synonymy of word or phrase in a sentence found in Bali language were compared with the use other part of Bali for their similarity of meaning or difference depend on their use by referring to the dictionary of Bali-Indonesia-English and information from the society. The purpose is to identify the similarities or differences of meaning found in the daily conversation synonymy of intra-lexical items, formal or informal languages used by adults or children. The study was descriptively analyzed by using qualitative approach based on datas finding in the location using observation method from the respondents to search detail of information required. Relation of meaning analyzed based on the finding through observation and contact involvement method with the respondents.   Key words: lexical, meaning relationship, and synonym

Abstract

Bahasa Inggris adalah bahasa internasional yang merupakan hal penting dalam dunia pariwisata. Bahasa Inggris digunakan tidak hanya sebatas sarana komunikasi, tetapi juga sebagai sarana dalam peningkatan kualitas pelayanan pariwisata. Kepuasan wisatawan dapat ditingkatkan salah satunya dengan peningkatan kemampuan berbahasa SDM yang terlibat di bidang tersebut. Apabila kualitas SDM yang terlibat dalam bidang pariwisata berhasil ditingkatkan, maka tingkat kepuasan wisatwan pun dapat didongkrak. Mengingat pentingnya bahasa Inggris bagi dunia pariwisata, maka Program Udayana Mengabdi dalam bentuk pelatihan bahasa Inggris bagi staf Dinas Pariwisata kabupaten Tabanan dilakukan guna meningkatkan kualitas sumber daya staf Dinas Pariwisata kabupaten Tabanan, khususnya dalam kemampuan berbahasa Inggris. Materi pelatihan yang diberikan berupa English for Tourism yang disesuaikan dengan kebutuhan bahasa Inggris peserta pelatihan. Pelatihan bahasa Inggris ini merupakan bentuk pengabdian kepada masyarakat yang dilakukan LP3M Universitas Udayana sebagai upaya mendukung program kerja Dinas Pariwisata kabupaten Tabanan.

Abstract

The aims of the English training with communication games to the students at SMPN 4 Nusa Penida, Desa Lembongan are to find out the English vocabulary of the students before the training was given and to describe the students’ communication development in English after the training was given. The six-sessions English training was given to the students in class VII (130 students) and class VIII (129 students). The TPR (Total Physical Response) was used during the training. The training materials were taken from the books “Beginners Communication Games” (2007) and “Elementary Communication Games” (2008) by Jill Hadfield with the six topics chosen based on their needs: 1) Lost in the post, 2) Crossroad, 3) Visiting Friends, 4) World map, 5) Room service, dan 6) The restaurant game. The results show that before the training was given, on average the students in class VII were able to write 3-8 words/sentences, menwhile the students in class VIII were able to write 5-12 words/sentences in 10 minutes. The students’ communication in English after the training was well developed, that is on the first day of the training they were still difficult to communicate in English, however, on the second day, they were able to greet the instructors in English, active in the classroom activity and learn English through communication games actively and without shame. Their English vocabulary is also developed after the training.

Abstract

This Community Service was conducted in Carangsari-Badung Utara, July-August 2010 in the form of Communicative English Training for the members of Tourism Awareness Group (Pokdarwis). The members mostly work in providing services in terms of rafting, tracking, elephant camp, horse riding and safari as the potential tourism attractions owned by this village. The training materials were given through the respective steps namely : Orientation, Drills, Feedback and Continuation. It turns out that the members of Pokdarwis managed to improve their communicative ability since they have experienced in using English previously. The members expected the team to continue giving more training in the future.

Abstract

Telex language is a language uses many abbreviations in its making. It is certainly interesting to be searched as in communicating to avoid misunderstandings between the message giver and the message recipient. The purpose of this research is to find out the semantic analysis of telex language used in PT.Garuda Indonesia branch office Denpasar. Method used to analyze the data in this research was metode padan/equivalent (Sudaryanto, 1985:15). The main theory used to analyze this problem is Critical Discourse Analysis proposed by Van Dijk (1997).The findings show that semantic analysis of telex language in PT.Garuda Indonesia branch office Denpasar consists of background on telex language is stated that the telex writer received complaints from passengers; details on telex language are stated with a chronological sequence of events that cause problems both in terms of the documents and procedures that passengers should not be experienced; the purpose of telex language is stated with requests or orders from the writer to the relevant parties to clarify or follow up on existing problems so they will not experience the same problems in the future. The result of the second analysis is there are no presuppositions and nominalization elements occur in telex language in the data.

Abstract

Dalam pembelajaran bahasa asing atau bahasa kedua seringkali dijumpai kesulitan yang dilakukan oleh pembelajar. Kesulitan tersebut antara lain disebabkan oleh adanya perbedaan antara bahasa asing yang dipelajari (L2) dengan bahasa ibu pembelajar (L1). Terdapat kesalahan pembelajar yang dipengaruhi oleh L1. Kesalahan-kesalahan tersebut bisa terjadi pada bidang fonologi, kosa kata, dan tata bahasa (Breadsmore, 1982). Perbedaan ini menyebabkan kesalahan-kesalahan dalam penggunaan L2 oleh pembelajar. Hal ini menunjukkan pengaruh dari L1 terhadap pemerolehan L2 (Ellis in Bhela, 1999). Penelitian ini bertujuan menganalisa pengaruh bahasa ibu terhadap bahasa Inggris mahasiswa program studi Sastra Inggris, Fakultas Ilmu Budaya, Universitas Udayana, bahasa Bali dianggap sebagai bahasa Ibu mahasiswa. Kedua bahasa akan dibandingkan untuk menganalisa perbedaan dan persamaan diantara keduanya. Responden dalam penelitian adalah mahasiswa semester dua Program Studi Sastra Inggris yang akan dianalisa kemampuan menulisnya dalam Bahasa Inggris. Tulisan mahasiswa kemudian akan dianalisa berdasarkan kesalahan yang ditemukan, khususnya dalam hal morfologi dan sintaksis. Selanjutnya, kesalahan-kesalahan tersebut dianalisa berdasarkan perbedaan antara L1 dan L2 yang menyebabkan terjadinya kesalahan.

Abstract

Lakoff's assertion about women's language was a breakthrough in linguistics. However, many linguists and researchers also criticized and stated different perspectives towards Lakoff's theory. Therefore, this study was conducted in order to know whether Lakoff's theory is still relevant nowadays. This study used the movie “I’ Tonya” as the data source. It was applied with quantitative and qualitative analysis. It is a documentation method supported with a corpus analysis based on the concordance technique using AntConc software. The findings show that nine types of women's linguistics features were used by the female characters in the “I’ Tonya” movie. Meanwhile, one type of women linguistics feature of the precise color term was not found. From 10677 words of corpus data from “I’ Tonya” subtitles script, women used lexical hedges accounting for 64% while men only 36%. It was also found in intensifier where women used accounting for 103 expressions and men only 37 expressions. However, in avoidance of strong swear words, women were using swear words about 71% compared to only 28% used by men.

Abstract

The aims of this study is to find out the types of language style and find out the dominant types of language style used by the main characters in Green Book Movie. The data were taken from the movie entitled Green Book. The data were collected by documentation and note-taking techniques. This study used mixed method for analyzing the data. The data were analyzed using theory of language style proposed by Martin Joos (1967) and the theory of factors influence the used of language style by Holmes (1992) as support theory. In presenting the data, this study applied both formal and informal techniques and methods. The result of the study shows that is found twenty data of language style that used by the main characters and all types of language style were can found in the movie used by the main characters. While each of the characters not used one out of five types of language style. The dominant type of language style is casual style which was used by an actor named Tony Lip. Meanwhile, the factor that influences the use of language style are setting, participant and function.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify and analyze the subtitling strategies based on Gottlieb (1992) translation theory and the translation accuracy according to translation theory by Larson (1998: 530) in the Paterson movie. This study used descriptive-qualitative method to analyze the data and documentation method applied to collect the data. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that there were 389 data found in Paterson movie with transfer (129 data), paraphrase (93 data), deletion (59 data), condensation (55 data), imitation (21 data), Expansion (17 data), decimation (14 data), and resignation (1 data). However, there were no transcription and dislocation strategies that had found in the Paterson subtitle translation. Meanwhile, for the translation accuracy, the findings show there were 281 out of 389 data that the translator translated it accurately, and 108 out of 389 data inaccurate translation. Therefore, the Indonesian subtitle of "Paterson" movie was categorized as an accurate translation text.

Abstract

Social media (social media) has now become a part of the life of Indonesian people who are very phenomenal. Various kinds of advantages and conveniences are offered to interact with everyone both in terms of business even from various circles. Not only that, with the development of internet use and communication technology devices such as smartphones that are increasingly advanced, it has become one of the drivers of the growth of new networking sites that offer friends and information online. Social media has also become the backbone as a means of communication in this digital century. This study aims to determine students' perceptions about the extent of the use of social media in helping them learn English. English that is expected to be understood and learned is English in hospitality and also in advertising language. This research is important to find out how students perceive the effectiveness of using social media to support their learning and understanding and creativity in the field of English for Hospitality and in compiling advertising language. A total of 50 students from the English Literature study program of Udayana University will be used as data sources in conducting this research. This research will use qualitative methods with a case study design. The use of questionnaires as well as semi-structured interviews will be carried out in collecting data. In analyzing the data will use a basic statistical model of the results of questionnaires on students. Meanwhile, the results of the interview data will be analyzed with the Flow model from Miles and Huberman.
