Abstract

This Study is aimed to know how much the influence of e-commerce to sales and to know which type of e-commerce has the most influence on sales. This study was conducted at apparel industry in Bali Province. The sample in this study is 100 business units at apparel industry in Bali Province. The analysis technique used in this study is instrumental variabel (IV). The results of this study indicate that the value of sales by using e-commerce is 258 percent greater than the value of sales without using e-commerce. The value of sales using Facebook is 46 percent greater than using other types of e-commerce. It is also known that the sales of t-shirt clothing is bigger 1.3 percent instead of other kind of clothing. This study also shows overseas or exported marketing has 82 percent greater sales than local or domestic marketed. Keywords: e-commerce, apparel industry, sales, instrumental variables

Abstract

In this research, the development of racism based on the different formations of socio-cultural and historical aspects was the standpoint that was shown by the interpretation of poetical depiction of meaning and messages. The gap between Langston Hughes in “I, too, sing America” (1926) and Amy Saunders in “You’re not Black” (2019) as the data advocates for racist transformation in natural past and present American socialization. Several critical studies have examined the racial issues reflected in poems however they didn’t elaborate on racism specifically rather than segregation and discrimination although racism is classified in several types. Moreover, the critical studies have been done only analyzed the racism happened on the past while this study compares the past and present racism as the concern of social construction among black American as the target of unfair treatments. The descriptive qualitative method using documentation, descriptive analysis, and note-taking technique was used to identify and elaborate meaning correlation with racial issues in the poems. This research aimed to classify the figurative language and its meaning related to racism while illustrating the development of racism from the perspective of socio-cultural and historical aspects that influenced the poets and their poetry. Theory of Critical Race was used to demonstrate that racism was developing in a different formation. The research has found the interconnection between historical values of slavery system constructed stereotypes of black people as minor American. Social construction formed a cultural differentiation which led to segregation and discrimination towards black in any form of everyday aspects.

Abstract

To face the Asian Economic Community, active mastery of English is very important so that people can compete with good workers from their own area or workers from other Asian countries. This study aims to find out (1) whether the problems faced by the students of the Faculty of Economics, Udayana University in learning English and (2) whether the English language needs needed by economic students at the Faculty of Economics and Business, Udayana University to design the correct syllabus and effective in teaching English. Analysis of English language needs is done by giving questionnaires to students for their answers, those questions concerning the field of English what they are very proficient (speaking, listening, reading and writing) and which areas of English they find difficult to learn, and choose what lessons they think are necessary that have not been provided in the current syllabus. The answers from these students will be analyzed according to the need analysis by Hutchinson and Waters (1994) and Dudley-Evans and St. John (1998). From this research, it is expected that students can improve their English language skills in economics majors and also can design a new syllabus that is more effective in accordance with the needs of students at the Faculty of Economics, Udayana University. Abstract

Code switching is a phenomenon where a person switches their language when speaking. Code switching or CS is mostly used by young teenager who are able to speak in 2 more languages, or bilingual, and young YouTuber from Indonesia, Naila is one of them. This research aims are to analyzed the types and functions of Code Switching that Naila uttered on one of her YouTube video entitled “Belajar Bahasa Asing OTODIDAK kayak Fiki Naki”. Using qualitative research method and both theories of code switching types by Poplack (1980) and speech function of code switching theories by Appel & Muysken (2005), this research found all the types and functions are used in the video with Intra-sentential code switching and metalinguistic function are the most frequent used by Naila on the video.

Abstract

The study discusses lexical hedges in reflecting gender differences through the movie and analyzes the features of lexical hedges used in Sierra Burgess Is a Loser movie. The data were processed by categorizing the data into components of lexical hedges based on the framework of hedges proposed by Namasaraev (1997) and the sequential positions of lexical hedges proposed by Rosanti&Jaelani (2016). The use of nine types of lexical hedges conforming to its classification by the male and female characters showed a different number of results. As a result, female characters tend to more used lexical hedges rather than men characters. The female characters were mostly used lexical hedges as fillers yeah in their utterance to show their feelings, emotion, or opinion in the movie. The total data showed the number of female characters in using lexical hedges was 92 words sequentially from the most commonly used, i.e. fillers, lexical verbs, modal auxiliary verbs, adverb of frequency, adverb, and noun. Meanwhile, male characters used 40 words of lexical hedges and fillers as the most commonly used hedges through the word; like. In this movie, there were two sequential positions of lexical hedges, namely; the initial and medial position. Besides that, the female characters had a wide range of types in uttering the words that contained lexical hedges, whereas the male characters were not too often in selecting the words of lexical hedges. Penelitian ini membahas mengenai penggambaran lexical hedges dalam perbedaan gender melalu isebuah film, serta untuk menganalisis fitur lexical hedges yang digunakan dalam film Sierra Burgess Is a Loser. Data sudah diproses dengan mengkategorikan data menjadi komponen lexical hedges berdasarkan kerangka hedges yang disusun oleh Namasaraev (1997) dan posisi sekuensial lexical hedges yang diusulkan oleh Rosanti & Jaelani (2016). Penggunaan dari sembilan tipe lexical hedges berdasarkan klasifikasi oleh karakter pria dan wanita menampilkan hasil yang berbeda. Hasilnya, karakter wanita cenderung menggunakan lexical hedges dibandingkan dengan karakter pria. Karakter wanita paling sering menggunakan fitur lexical hedges sebagai fillers yaitu; yeah dalam ucapan mereka untuk menunjukkan perasaan, emosi, dan opini di dalam film. Total data menunjukkan penggunaan lexical hedges oleh karakter wanita berjumlah 92 kata yang secara beruratan dari yang paling sering digunakan yakni fillers, lexical verbs, modal auxiliary verbs, adverb of frequency, adverb, dan noun. Sedangkan, karakter pria menggunakan 40 kata lexical hedges dan fillers like sebagai fitur hedges yang paling sering digunakan. Di dalam film ini, terdapat dua posisi sekuensial dari lexical hedges yakni posisi awal dan posisi tengah. Disamping itu, karakter wanita memiliki jangkauan yang luas mengenai tipe-tipe dalam penyampaian kata yang mengandung fitur lexical hedges, sedangkan karakter pria tidak terlalu sering menggunakan kata lexical hedges didalam pemilihan kata

Abstract

The title of this study is Linguistic Features Used by the Female and Male Character in “Black Widow” Movie. The problems discussed in this study are the kinds of women’s language features used by female and male characters in the “Black Widow” movie also the speech functions expressed. The study aims to identify the women’s language features found in Natasha’s and Alexei’s utterances and to define the speech functions they expressed. The data were taken from the “Black Widow” movie and supported by the English subtitle, obtained from Disney+ Hotstar. The method used to collect the data is documentation and the technique used is note-taking. The descriptive qualitative method is used to analyze the data, the steps used to analyze the data are identifying the female and male characters by using the women’s language theory which is proposed by Lakoff (2004), and describing its speech functions based on Holmes (2013) theory. The analysis was presented descriptively in the form of a paragraph. There are seven features of women's language found in the female and male utterances. Those are lexical hedges, tag questions, rising intonation on declaratives, empty adjectives, intensifiers, super polite forms, and emphatic stress. The functions of speech that were expressed in the features they used are expressive function, directive function, referential function, metalinguistic function, and phatic function.

Abstract

The current development of technology has been instantly changing the whole society with the easy access for searching information through the internet. Using media support is a consideration to increase activities of learning and adapting the development of this era. The English learning desire creativity for teaching the students as their target goal. This research aims to analyze the meaning of the terms related to science agricultural technology by implementing Internet Based-Learning for students in the Department of Food Technology, including their translation. It was conducted with mixed methods (qualitative and quantitative). by giving guidance to first-year semester on how they could use the WebCorp media to search articles. Then, students instructed to find the translation and understanding of the meaning in each of the terms. This search engine is a machine that compiles Bing or big data capacity and collected as corpus. The texts can be found in various types and sources on the internet. The discussion of problems in the study covers description of understanding the meaning search for terms related to agricultural technology, evaluating parameter of ability to search meaning through internet based-learning by using WebCorp media and strategies implementation to learn English, mainly meaning related to agricultural technology. It showed that there were 47 terms equivalence based on their English terms meaning and translation of Indonesian related to agricultural technology, meanwhile, 7 were found inequivalence for their meanings and text chosen. So, 87% of their results relevant to the agricultural technology but 13% were not connected with the specification of terms and meaning. The students understood how to use the media of searching and gave experience to them.

Abstract

This study was aimed to finding and discuss about the affection of the change of gender in terms of language features used by Einar Wegener with masculine gender and after changing gender into Lili Elbe with feminine gender. The frequency of use of each language feature reduced by 31 in Einar's data and 29 in Lili's data, according to a comparative analysis of the affection of men-to-women identity transformation. As a result, the language features of transgender woman, Lili Elbe, were found to dominantly use women's language features, despite the fact that three of the five features used men's language features. Hence, it was proven that Lili Elbe's transformation from a man to a woman had influence on her language features, which was followed by a change in gender from masculine to feminine due to the influence of an environment dominated by women and influenced by feminine topics of conversation.

Abstract

In everyday life, humans interact and communicate using language. The use of language varies depending on gender, which is influenced by the different roles each gender plays in society. The different use of language then referred to language features that it uses are also reflected in movies. This study aims to analyze the women’s and men’s language features used by the main character in Disney Movies. The data were analyzed using a descriptive qualitative method with a theory proposed by Lakoff (1975) and Coates (2004). It was found out that the main character of the Turning Red Movie (2022) used eight forms out of ten women language features proposed by Lakoff; meanwhile, the main character in the Ron’s Gone Wrong Movie (2021) used all of the men’s language features proposed by Coates. This result shows that women and men have their characteristics in using language as a form of influence from their social environment.

Abstract

Humor is often used as a way to express emotions about specific topics. It is commonly delivered in the form of jokes and is frequently used in shows that portray the daily life of the characters, especially the ones that use verbal humor. This article aims to fill the gap in the study of the subject of the Cooperative Principle in Pragmatics, which is a complement to the issue analyzed. This study uses qualitative research to approach the data collected from a sitcom series, Brooklyn Nine-Nine. The study used the theory of the Cooperative Principle proposed by Paul Grice. The result of this study shows: (1) the TV series delivers humor by violating four of the Maxims, and (2) the violation of Maxims is required to help the contribution of the conversation in the TV series leads to be related to the audience.
