Abstract

Objective: To compare two aerobic exercise training program, asthma gymnastic and static ergocycleexercise, in improving VO2max and QoL based on St. George’s Respiratory Questionaire (SGRQ)for partially-controlled asthmatic patients. Methods: This study analysed 36 of partially-controlled asthmatic adult patients (aged 21-50 yearsold) which were divided into two groups, asthma gymnastic (A, n=18) and ergocycle exercise (B,n=18) each for 3x/week for 6 weeks. Before and after treatment, VO2max was measured usingAstrand ergocycle method and QoL using SGRQ.Results: Significant increase of mean VO2max in both groups (A 3.78 ml/kg/minute vs B 7.13 ml/kg/minute in group B; p 0.00). Significant improvements were also found in all component of SGRQ(p=0.00) in both groups, with higher total score found in group B (A 271.11 vs B 384.86, p=0.00).Conclusion: Static ergocycle exercise increased the level of VO2 max and QoL in partially-controlledasthmatic adult patients better than asthma gymnastic. Keywords: Asthma gymnastic, static ergocycle exercise, partially-controlled asthma, quality of life, VO2max

Abstract

The use of temephos as larvicides in disease prevention Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) in Indonesia has been going on for 40 years. Larviciding very long led the resistance to temephos. Cloves, one of native Indonesia plant contains eugenol that are toxic to the insect’s body. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of Zanzibar clove leaf essential oil compared to temephos in killing the larvae of Aedes aegypti. This study uses experimental laboratory research design. The samples are larvae of Aedes aegypti stage III. The mosquito larvae were classified into six groups, each given a clove leaf essential oil with different concentrations. Next will be observed the number of larvae that die after 24 hours. Based on statistical test p-value p < 0.05 it indicates there are differences in the average mortality in the test group, and post hoc analysis showed the test group with 100 ppm of essential oil is not a significant difference with temephos. This study suggests the essential oil of clove leaf varieties of Zanzibar has the same effectiveness with temephos in killing the larvae of Aedes aegypti.

Abstract

Background: Diagnosis of drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) begins with identifying presumptive DR-TB patients using Xpert MTB/RIF, as a diagnostic test to detect resistance to rifampicin. The study aimed to identify the distribution of rifampicin-resistant tuberculosis (RR-TB) patients based on presumptive DR-TB criteria at Dr. Hasan Sadikin General Hospital Bandung. Moreover, this study also explored the Xpert MTB/RIF Ct values. Methods: This was a descriptive-retrospective study from 570 medical records of DR-TB patients collected at the Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) clinic of Dr. Hasan Sadikin General Hospital from 2016 to 2019. The inclusion criteria were suspected patients with the Xpert MTB/RIF Ct values in the very low-low and medium-high categories. Data were analyzed using frequency distribution. Results: The most common presumptive DR-TB criteria among DR-TB patients were relapse cases (52.3%). Presumptive DR-TB criteria, with a high percentage result of medium-high Ct values, were category II treatment failure (80.9%).Conclusion: Relapse case and category II treatment failure are presumptive DR-TB criteria, which need more attention from clinicians.

Abstract

Background: Tuberculosis (TB) affects over 10 million people worldwide and causes more than 1.4 million deaths in 2019. Despite improvements in TB treatment, many TB survivors experience ongoing health problems. Post-TB lung disease (PTLD) affects 30-60% of treated patients, leading to chronic respiratory impairments and reduced quality of life. Data on PTLD in Indonesia, a country with a high TB burden, are still scarce. We conducted a preliminary study in Bandung to estimate the burden of respiratory health problems among those who completed TB treatment. Methods: Adults aged 18 years or older with a history of TB treatment and a minimum of 6 months since treatment completion were screened at two primary healthcare centres in Bandung municipality. Data on demographics, previous TB history, and clinical symptoms were collected. Results: From 133 identified TB survivors, 61 eligible patients were interviewed. Persistent respiratory symptoms, such as cough or shortness of breath, were observed in 6 (9.8%) patients. Among these patients, some had abnormal chest x-ray and/or negative Gene Xpert MTB/RIF results. Conclusion: Even after completing treatment, nearly 1 in 10 TB survivors experienced chronic respiratory symptoms. Greater efforts and awareness are needed to improve post-TB wellbeing, especially in high-burden settings like Indonesia.
