Abstract

This study aims to explore social stratification in education during the Dutch colonial era in Probolinggo. Previous studies have shown that various educational policies implemented by the Dutch in Probolinggo were intended to prepare administrative and manual labor workers who would play an important role in building the economy. However, these policies have actually resulted in unfair social stratification in society. Although native education offered opportunities to obtain an education, these schools were established with a specific purpose: to meet the needs of manual labor workers for the benefit of Dutch capital. Native education mostly provided basic skills needed to work in specific sectors. This study was conducted using a historical approach consisting of heuristic, criticism, interpretation, and historiography stages. The results confirm that Dutch colonial education policies in Probolinggo not only produced manual labor workers but also strengthened the position of the Dutch East Indies government. Keywords: Social Stratification, Education, Probolinggo, Dutch Colonial.

Abstract

This article analyzes the myth of beauty within the “UNEJ Cantik” community, focusing on its members' efforts to achieve the ideal concept of beauty. The research highlights the collective and horizontal interactions among community members in shaping beauty standards, a perspective that is less commonly discussed compared to studies emphasizing the role of individuals or influencers in establishing beauty norms. Using the netnography method, data were collected through observations and in-depth interviews with community members, comprising 10 core informants, 5 additional informants, and 2 account administrators. The findings reveal that the community's ideal beauty standards include glowing skin, a slim body, straight hair, and natural makeup. These standards are influenced by three main contexts: mass media (including social media), Dutch colonial heritage, and the local Pandhalungan culture. To achieve these standards, community members engage in various practices such as using skincare products, undergoing whitening injections, getting hair treatments, and getting eyelash extensions. This phenomenon reflects the tension between students' rational aspirations and the exploitation by the beauty market, as well as the clash between local values and global aesthetics. Thus, this study aims to foster critical awareness of the social pressures arising from the homogenization of modern beauty standards.

Abstract

The book Konflik Agraria: Kebijakan Industrialisasi, Dualisme Hukum, dan Dekade Krisis offers a critical reflection on the imbalance in the management of agrarian resources in Indonesia. It thematically discusses issues of agrarian reform, the historical roots of conflict, sociological-legal approaches, and case studies such as Banyuwangi, which illustrate how industrialization policies have escalated land conflicts. The author highlights the dominance of state and corporate power in shaping policies, along with the weak legal protection afforded to agrarian communities. While the book presents important data and case studies, it is considered lacking in theoretical depth, field-based approaches, and transformative solutions. Additional criticism is directed at its disjointed narrative structure and less evocative language. Despite these limitations, the book serves as a valuable starting point for understanding agrarian conflict, though it leaves ample room for deeper conceptual exploration and approaches more aligned with social justice. Keywords: agrarian conflict, industrialization, agrarian law, agrarian reform, social justice.

Abstract

The rise of TikTok as one of the most popular social media platforms and its significant influence on Gen Z has attracted the attention of many parties. However, the impact of TikTok on gender norms, lifestyles, and cultural shifts among Generation Z is still limited, especially in a local context. This article, on the other hand, will explore these issues within the context of East Java. As an exploratory study, this research employs a qualitative approach, involving 20 female students (Gen Z) as participants. Data were collected through unstructured group interviews in four cities in East Java (Surabaya, Malang, Jember, and Mojokerto) and focus group discussions (FGD). The results of this study indicate that TikTok, on one hand, still reinforces conventional gender norms, particularly through video content focused on beauty. However, in terms of lifestyle, TikTok has become a mirror for many members of Generation Z, the majority of whom adhere to Islamic teachings, even among millennial religious figures. TikTok significantly influences Generation Z's lifestyle preferences and acts as a medium for cultural change. It serves as a social and cultural agent, impacting individuals and broader social structures.
