Abstract

The hegemonic attempts made by the British and European Jews triggered resistance from the Palestinian people. The resistance is manifested in physical and non-physical struggles, including literary works. This research aims to reveal the construction of resistance in Ibrahim Touqan's Mawtini by using the theory of New Historicism by Stephen Greenblatt. Literary readings are juxtaposed with non-literary texts in order to find the historical background of colonialism in Palestine in the British Mandate era and the diaspora of Jews from Europe. This research is a descriptive qualitative type. The data of this research is in the form of mawtini song lyrics which are then read together with two non-literary books to understand the historical substance behind the song lyrics. Based on the results of the research, it was found that the construction of resistance in this song is structured through the perspective of the people seeing their homeland, the hope for a resolution to the conflict, the importance of the role of youth to fight, the purpose of the resistance and the methods taken in resistance to hegemony efforts over the land of Palestine.

Abstract

This research explores themes of diasporic alienation and empathy in Khalil Gibran and Suheir Hammad’s poetry from a postcolonial perspective. Khalil Gibran, a Lebanese-American poet, and Suheir Hammad, a Palestinian-American poet, articulate their complex diasporic experiences from distinct historical moments. Both emphasize a persistent longing to reconnect with their homelands, revealing how alienation and empathy shape identity in diaspora. While numerous studies have analyzed Arab-American literary expressions of identity and displacement, there remains a notable scholarly gap concerning how hybridity and subalternity shed light on the poetry of these two prominent poets. Employing postcolonial theories of hybridity and subalternity, this research uses a descriptive qualitative method, analyzing primary data from Gibran’s poem “Dead Are My People” and Hammad’s poems “Break (Rebirth)”, “Break (Sister)”, and “Break (Embargo)”. Secondary sources include literature addressing Arab-American diasporic experiences, the Israel-Gaza conflict, and the Lebanese famine events. Through textual and contextual analyses, the findings reveal Gibran’s depiction of geographical and cultural alienation, emotional alienation, and alienation from collective solidarity, whereas Hammad primarily explores identity alienation. Regarding empathy, Gibran addresses the historical trauma of the Lebanese famine under Ottoman rule, while Hammad reflects on the contemporary violence and suffering in Palestine. This study contributes to Arab-American literary scholarship by showing how diasporic alienation and empathy illuminate ongoing colonial impacts and identity negotiation across generations.

Abstract

Objectives: This study aims to evaluate the Affordable Food Movement (Gerakan Pangan Murah, GPM) program in Bandung City, which seeks to stabilize food supply and prices by providing food at prices below the market rate, making it affordable for low- and middle-income communities despite their dependence on external food sources. Research Methodology: This research was conducted using a qualitative descriptive approach based on the CIPP (Context, Input, Process, Product) evaluation model developed by Stufflebeam (1985). Data were gathered through document analysis, observations, and interviews with local government officials and community representatives Results: The findings reveal several challenges: uneven implementation across districts, limited execution in areas affected by stunting and low socioeconomic status, protracted coordination processes, inadequate budgeting, ineffective public communication, and flawed operational mechanisms. These constraints hinder the program’s objective of ensuring access to affordable food for vulnerable populations. Conclusion: The evaluation reveals that the Affordable Food Movement (Gerakan Pangan Murah, GPM) program in Bandung faces challenges in consistent implementation, coordination, and outreach, limiting its effectiveness in assisting vulnerable populations. Comprehensive improvements in program design and management are essential to enhance its impact on food supply stability and community welfare. Limitations: The study’s limitations include reliance on qualitative data from a single region, which may affect the generalizability of the findings to other cities. Contributions: This research provides strategic recommendations to enhance food security programs, supporting policymakers and stakeholders in improving urban food systems and poverty reduction. Implementing these can stabilize food prices and expand access for underserved communities in Bandung.
