Abstract

Esai The Age of Reason (Part I) merupakan sebuah tulisan yang berisi pandangan Thomas Paine mengenai agama. Dalam esai ini, Paine mengungkapkan argumennya mengenai hubungan antara keberadaan Tuhan dan kebenaran sebuah agama. Argumen-argumen tersebut disusun berdasarkan kepercayaan Paine terhadap paham Deisme. Pada akhirnya, paham Deisme lah yang membuat Thomas Paine menjadi seseorang yang skeptis terhadap agama.Skripsi ini menganalisis sikap skeptis Thomas Paine terhadap institusi agama. Penulis memilih esai The Age of Reason (Part I) yang ditulis oleh Thomas Paine sebagai objek penelitian. Hal yang menjadi fokus dalam skripsi ini adalah bagaimana argumen-argumen Thomas Paine menunjukkan keyakinannya terhadap Deisme, dan membuatnya menjadi seseorang yang skeptis terhadap agama. Untuk mengetahui hal ini, penulis menggunakan pendekatan filsafat agama dengan memakai teori Religious Skepticism milik J. L. Schellenberg.Dari analisis, dapat disimpulkan bahwa keyakinan Thomas Paine terhadap Deisme memiliki arti penting terhadap sikap skeptisnya pada agama. Deisme yang mengutamakan penggunaan akal dalam memahami agama menemukan banyak kesalahan yang terdapat pada institusi agama sehingga membuat sikap skeptis Thomas Paine terhadap agama semakin besar.

Abstract

This qualitative study explores the potential of critical reading as a tool for promoting religious moderation among Generation Z Muslims. The research focuses on a group of young Muslims aged 18-21 years enrolled in a Religious Moderation course at a State Institute of Islamic Studies in Indonesia. The study investigates how training in critical reading of religious texts can influence their interpretations of Islamic teachings and their attitudes towards diversity and pluralism. Data was collected through in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and participant observation. The findings suggest that fostering critical reading skills can encourage more moderate and inclusive understandings of Islam among Generation Z Muslims, potentially mitigating the influence of religious extremism. This research contributes valuable insights into the role of education in promoting religious tolerance and countering radicalization among young Muslims in the digital age.

Abstract

Numeracy and science literacy are essential competencies in navigating the increasingly complex global era. In this context, proficiency in English as an international language serves as a strategic advantage, enabling broader access to high-quality learning resources. This research-based community service aims to improve numeracy and science literacy among students at Pondok Pesantren in Pekalongan, by integrating English-based learning resources used service learning approach.. The program was introduced to improve students' readiness to face global challenges, focusing on strengthening their understanding of numeracy and science through English-based learning materials. This study evaluates the effectiveness of the program using statistically analyzed pretest and posttest data. The results showed an increase in mean score from pretest (5.44) to posttest (7.67), but statistical analysis showed that this increase was not significant. The normality test confirmed that the data distribution was normally distributed, which allowed the use of parametric statistical methods. The paired samples t-test showed no significant difference between pretest and posttest scores (p-value = 0.093). However, the effect size analysis showed a moderate effect (Cohen's d = 0.636, Hedges' g = 0.606), which suggested that the program made a meaningful impact, although not statistically significant. These results suggest that although the program has potential, it needs improvements such as longer duration, larger sample size, and more effective teaching methods to achieve significant results. The study concludes that integrating English literacy with numeracy and science education has the potential to prepare students for global challenges, and the program can be further developed with stronger implementation strategies.

Abstract

Artikel ini bertujuan untuk mengulas pandangan salah seorang cendekiawan muslim Indonesia, Kuntowijoyo dalam melihat posisi ilmu pengetahuan dalam paradigma etis, baik teoritis maupun praksis. Hal demikian dilatarbelakangi dengan pendekatan etis ilmu (pengetahuan) yang berangkat dari sebuah keyakinan bahwa ilmu itu pada dasarnya tidak ada yang benar-benar netral atau bebas nilai yang justru ilmu sarat dengan bias-bias dan kepentingan dari para perumusnya. Artikel ini ditulis menggunakan pendekatan deskriptif-kualitatif dengan didukung dengan metode pengumpulan data berupa studi pustaka. Dari pembahasan diketahui bahwa secara etis Kuntowijoyo melihat landasan ilmu pengetahuan yang tidak dapat berdiri bebas nilai. Paradigma demikian secara teoritis, terdapat empat aspek yang menurut Kuntowijoyo yang relevan untuk dibicarakan antara lain tujuan akhir paradigma Islam, keterlibatan paradigma Islam dalam sejarah, methodological objectivism, serta sikap terhadap ilmu-ilmu sekuler. Pada praksisnya, paradigma etis ilmu pengetahuan profetik dapat diwujudkan melalui tiga cara antara lain teorisasi, strukturasi, serta transformasi.
