Abstract

Introduction: Communicable diseases pose a major threat to public health with significant impacts on mortality rates. Despite efforts to control these diseases, challenges in addressing their spread remain, especially in regions with limited resources. Kabupaten Pangkajene and Kepulauan faces this issue, with diseases such as ISPA, Diarrhea, and Tuberculosis (TBC) being the main concerns. Objective: This study aims to analyze the trends in the spread of communicable diseases and evaluate the health policies implemented in Kabupaten Pangkajene and Kepulauan from 2021 to 2023. Methods: This research adopts a mixed-methods approach. The quantitative approach analyzes disease trends based on case report data from the Health Office and Public Health Centers (Puskesmas). The qualitative approach involves Focus Group Discussions (FGD) and interviews with program implementers to evaluate health policies. SWOT analysis is used to identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats related to disease prevention policies. Results: ISPA, Diarrhea, and Tuberculosis (TBC) are the main communicable diseases in Kabupaten Pangkajene and Kepulauan from 2021 to 2023. The SWOT analysis reveals strengths in community awareness but weaknesses in healthcare infrastructure. Opportunities to strengthen the health system are abundant, while threats from disease spread and resource shortages remain significant. Conclusion: Communicable diseases are rising in Pangkajene and Kepulauan Regency, notably respiratory infections, diarrhea, and tuberculosis. The SWOT analysis reveals both systemic strengths and areas for policy intervention. Strengthening public health education, healthcare infrastructure, disease surveillance, and GIS-based risk mapping is essential. These findings offer critical insights for policymakers to redesign regional health strategies, allocate resources more effectively, and build a resilient, data-driven response framework for managing current and future public health threats.

Abstract

Mbojo farmers are at high risk of suffering from Diabetes Mellitus (DM) due to hard work and a diet high in carbohydrates. However, the incidence of DM among them is relatively low thanks to the tradition of using the Nyale seaworm (Eunice sicilliensis) for prevention and treatment. This research aims to uncover these traditional practices in Parado District, West Nusa Tenggara, in 2024. The research method used is qualitative with a case study approach. The informants consisted of six people who were selected through purposive sampling. The results of the study showed that DM prevention was carried out by consuming fresh Nyale worms during mass spawning in the Nyale smell tradition. This tradition involves prayer and prayer together, followed by the taking of Nyale on the 9th day of the Hijri month. Treatment is carried out by drying, punching, and applying Nyale to the wound of DM sufferers. These findings show the potential of local traditions as a preventive measure and natural treatment. The implications include the development of DM prevention programs, increasing access to health services, occupational health education, and improving the work environment. Researchers recommend further studies to explore the benefits of Nyale worms as a candidate for diabetes drugs, while supporting the development of natural ingredients in modern medicine

Abstract

Introduction: Adolescent social anxiety, particularly among females, is reported at 28.2% versus 25.4% among males. Globally, it affects about 7% of the population annually and contributes to higher risks of non-communicable and mental disorders. Social media, especially TikTok, is suspected to play a crucial role in this issue. Aims: This study compared the relationship between TikTok use intensity and social anxiety among female students from two educational settings: SMAN 9 Makassar (public) and SMA IT Ar-Rahmah (Islamic-based private). Methods: A quantitative cross-sectional design was used with 86 respondents selected through multistage and total sampling. Instruments included the Social Anxiety Scale for Adolescents (SAS-A), four questionnaires on social media use, and Welltory for physiological data. Results: Social anxiety was reported by 55.8% and 46.4% of SMAN 9 Makassar and SMA IT Ar-Rahmah students, respectively. The Mann-Whitney U test showed no significant difference between schools (p=0.163). The Chi-Square test revealed a significant relationship between TikTok use intensity and social anxiety (p=0.000). Duration of use also differed significantly (p=0.019), with SMAN 9 and SMA IT Ar-Rahmah students averaging 112.7 and 73.8 minutes/day. TikTok content type was significantly related to social anxiety at SMAN 9 Makassar (p=0.000) but not at SMA IT Ar-Rahmah (p=0.960). User activity and general social media intensity showed no significant link. Conclusion: Social anxiety levels did not differ significantly between schools, but TikTok use intensity and content type were strongly associated. Multilevel interventions involving screening, digital literacy, and policy collaboration are recommended.

Abstract

Background: Employee engagement is a crucial factor influencing workforce performance and sustainability in hospitals. Low employee engagement may increase turnover intention, leading to high recruitment costs, declining service quality, and reduced patient satisfaction. Objective: This study aims to analyze the influence of employee engagement on turnover intention among staff at Yapika General Hospital in 2025. Method: A quantitative research design with a cross-sectional approach was applied, involving 131 respondents selected through proportional sampling. Data were collected using the Gallup Q12 questionnaire with a 5-point Likert scale, and analyzed using univariate and bivariate methods with simple linear regression. Result: The findings show that the majority of respondents were not engaged (91.6%), with most having a moderate level of turnover intention (67.9%). Regression analysis revealed a significant effect of employee engagement on turnover intention (t = -10.987; p = 0.000). Conclusion: Furthermore, all four engagement dimensions (basic needs, management support, teamwork, and growth) showed significant negative effects on turnover intention. In conclusion, higher employee engagement reduces staff’s intention to resign. Therefore, enhancing engagement through fulfilling basic needs, managerial support, teamwork, and career development opportunities is essential to reduce turnover intention and maintain hospital service quality.
