Abstract

This article discusses English vocabulary learning medium for young learners through songs and stories inspired by the implementation of a community service program at the Pondok Kasih Orphanage, Salatiga. It aims to attract interest and motivate children to learn English. Research and Development method is used for the development of 4D (Define, Design, Develop, and Dissemination) by observation and documentation as the data collection techniques. The existing data are analyzed descriptive qualitatively. English Vocabulary media developed in this program is in the form of an audiobook which contains Indonesian children's songs that are translated into English and created in the form of stories. This medium is needed to attract and motivate children in learning English vocabulary in orphanages and young children learning communities.

Abstract

Poetry has become less and less preferred by the students. Poetry has been viewed as a boring subject. This is because the process of learning and teaching poetry is considered as a routine activity. This article seeks ways to make poetry become an interesting subject to learn by examining the existing poetry syllabus and proposing a more interactive syllabus. Ethnography was used in this study to gather the information. Lecturers and students will have to work together and collaborate in conducting a conducive atmosphere to reduce the anxiety in learning and teaching poetry. By reducing the anxiety, students will find that learning poetry will give them something more than just analyzing poems. Learning poems will contribute to their English development. The result of this study is a proposed syllabus that is more interactive compared to the existing one, especially the class activities; that are employing collage and mirror writing as ways to appreciate poems read. The implication of the proposed syllabus is that this syllabus should be implemented to see how far the proposed syllabus helps to reduce learning anxiety and make the learning process of poetry class become more interactive.

Abstract

This study investigates a woman's characteristics that reflect the ecofeminist perspective in empowering Orang Rimba through education depicted in The Jungle School. In analyzing the problem, this study applied descriptive-qualitative research using ecofeminism. The theory of character and ecofeminism describes a woman character's characteristics and relationship with nature in empowering the local people who still kept their local wisdom. The data is obtained through close reading focusing on the character's actions, responses, and reactions in educating Orang Rimba. It reveals that the main character is described as an intelligent, creative, and courageous woman who supports her in creating eco-friendly education to save nature from exploitation and preserve the indigenous people's local wisdom.Keywords: a woman character, ecofeminism, education

Abstract

Abstract. The main character, Yasmin, in the novel Maya was described as a strong and independent woman. Her relationship with other characters in the novel was the main focus of this research in terms of the power relation between Yasmin and other characters. This study aimed to find out Yasmin’s traits (in addition to the existing traits analyzed) through the analysis of politeness strategies used by Yasmin in her relationship with other characters. Qualitative method was used in which data analyzed were utterances. The utterances were analyzed based on the power relation between speaker and hearer as well as the politeness strategies used. The discussion showed that Yasmin used positive politeness more than other strategies and put herself in the position of holding the power in her relationship with other characters. Thus, Yasmin can be considered as a person who is confident as well as flexible. Keywords: Politeness Strategies, Character, Power Relation

Abstract

Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk memperlihatkan wujud internalisasi patriarki dalam tokoh utama perempuan dalam novel karya Ayu Utami, Maya, melalui analisis penokohan. Tujuan penelitian yaitu mendeskripsikan dan menjelaskan bagaimana nilai-nilai patriarki masih tertanam dalam kehidupan masyarakat modern dan juga dialami oleh Yasmin sebagai tokoh utama di dalam novel. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode deskriptif kualitatif. Sebagai seorang perempuan yang digambarkan sebagai pribadi yang mandiri dan kuat, Yasmin masih memiliki ketidakpuasan akan dirinya. Ini adalah salah satu pemicu dia berselingkuh dengan Saman, karena ketika bersama Saman, Yasmin merasa aman, diterima sebagai pribadi yang utuh tanpa kepura-puraan. Sedangkan jika bersama Lukas, suaminya, Yasmin harus bersikap sesuai dengan ‘tatanan’ yang ada. Yasmin adalah contoh dari alpha female character (pribadi yang mandiri, punya otoritas). Namun Yasmin tidak sepenuhnya digambarkan sebagai alpha female, karena masih ada kekosongan yang dia miliki yang ingin dia penuhi.

Abstract

Peran pariwisata dalam mengembangkan perekonomian masyarakat di berbagai tempat sangat besar, seperti halnya yang terjadi di desa wisata Tingkir Lor. Letak geografis dan beragamnya potensi yang dimiliki desa Tingkir Lor menjadikannya sebagai desa wisata pertama di Salatiga. Perkembangan desa wisata Tingkir Lor tidak terlepas dari peran kelompok sadar wisata (Pokdarwis) yang mengkoordinir kegiatan dan program-program yang berkaitan dengan penyediaan layanan wisata di Tingkir Lor. Salah satu upaya pokdarwis untuk menyampaikan informasi sekaligus promosi berupa website yang dirintis pada tahun 2015  dan sampai saat ini masih memerlukan pengembangan. Untuk memperkaya isi konten website desa wisata Tingkir Lor tersebut, tim PkM Program  Studi Sastra Inggris yang terdiri dari dua mahasiswa dan tiga dosen melakukan program pengabdian kepada masyarakat untuk menjawab kebutuhan masyarakat khususnya warga Tingkir Lor. Kegiatan PkM ini terintegrasi dengan kelas Travel Writing yang menghasilkan artikel bahasa Inggris tentang tujuh UMKM di desa wisata Tingkir Lor yang kemudian disunting dan diterjemahkan ke dalam bahasa Indonesia oleh Tim PkM. Hasil tulisan tersebut diunggah di website desa wisata Tingkir Lor. Melalui pendampingan dalam mengembangkan konten website desa wisata Tingkir Lor diharapkan dapat meningkatkan kesadaran masyarakat Tingkir Lor untuk memperkenalkan potensi desa yang beragam serta kearifan lokal yang masih belum terekspose, yang pada akhirnya bermanfaat untuk meningkatkan kesejahteraan masyarakat.

Abstract

Pada era ini, budaya lokal semakin luntur dan mungkin akan tergantikan dengan budaya dari luar, disamping itu, kurangnya ketertarikan anak-anak pada budaya lokal. Tujuan program pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini adalah melestarikan seni budaya ketoprak, sekaligus memperkenalkan dan merawat keberagaman melalui perpaduan seni tradisional daerah dan penggunaan bahasa internasional. SD Kristen Satya Wacana Salatiga bekerjasama dengan Fakultas Bahasa dan Seni Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana mengadakan pementasan ketoprak anak, dimana hal ini juga bertujuan untuk memperkuat peran UKSW sebagai Indonesia mini, tempat berbagai budaya daerah dijaga dan dihargai. Metode pelaksanaan yang dilakukan untuk pementasan ketoprak anak ini adalah melalui proses perencanaan, yaitu penulisan naskah dan latihan, kemudian pementasan dan evaluasi. Judul dari ketoprak anak tersebut adalah Dewi Wulan, yang dipentaskan menggunakan 4 bahasa yaitu bahasa Jawa, bahasa Indonesia, bahasa Inggris, dan bahasa Mandarin. Hasil dari kegiatan ini menyimpulkan bahwa pengenalan budaya multikultural dapat berjalan seiring dengan upaya melestarikan budaya lokal, dalam hal ini ketoprak, yang dikemas melalui pembelajaran bahasa asing. This era sees the diminishment of local culture and the likeliness of it being replaced by foreign cultures which can be a consequence of the younger generation’s interest in their own local culture. That said, SD Kristen Satya Wacana and the Faculty of Language and Arts of Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana organized a children's ketoprak performance which aimed at preserving the performance art of ketoprak while introducing multiculturalism through the use of international languages. This performance was also staged to cement the branding of UKSW as ‘Indonesia Mini’ where local cultures are preserved and appreciated. There were several stages to the performance: planning, script writing and rehearsal, and performance and evaluation. Taking the title of ‘Dewi Wulan’, the performance used four languages in its script: Javanese, Indonesian, English, and Mandarin. The performance led to a conclusion that the introduction of multiculturalism can happen simultaneously with the preservation of local culture, ketoprak in this case, presented through language learning.

Abstract

Conversation Analysis is a part of Discourse Analysis that is usually used to analyze conversations in human interaction. Since movies can be considered as a piece of literature made to resemble real life, this theory is adapted to discuss how characters in the movies interact to communicate. The different styles of communication between characters of different genders is a gripping subject to explore. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to analyze conversations between female-male, female-female, and male-male characters in the movie Barbie.   Since the data gathered were utterances in conversation, the adjacency pairs in the conversation were analyzed to see the pattern. The finding showed that there were differences in the types of adjacency pairs used between females and males in conversation. Female-Female conversations in Barbie tend to have more variety in types of adjacency pairs used if compared to Male-Male conversations. Meanwhile, the conversation between different genders, if initiated by a female (Female-Male conversations), was likely to have numerous types of adjacency pairs in contrast to if initiated by a male (Male-Female conversations). When the Indonesian subtitle was analyzed, there were no types of adjacency pairs modified through translation.   The findings also revealed that certain types of adjacency pairs were found only in specific gender conversations. Furthermore, the discussion revealed that gender plays a role in the choice of adjacency pairs employed.
