Abstract

Similes and metaphors are two forms of figurative language which are very familiar in literary works.  One factor that arise some common problems faced by translators in translating simile and metaphor is the cultural difference between the source language and target language. Therefore, translators would apply certain strategies or procedures to find the equivalence of similes and metaphors in the target language.  In “Two Kinds” short story, it can be found that Amy Tan also uses several similes and metaphors.  For student translators in Literary Translation class, it is a challenge to translate similes and metaphors in “Two Kinds” into Indonesian. Thus, this research aims at describing how student translators of Literary Translation class deal with the translation of those similes and metaphors. Hopefully, this study would give worth contribution to the development of literary translation and particularly for student translators in translating any literary works. By comparing students’ translations and the source text, it is found that students mostly applied reproducing the same image in the TL procedure to translate similes and metaphors from English into Indonesian.

Abstract

This paper aims at investigating how student subtitlers practice making subtitle of “Ambilkan Bulan” movie from Indonesian into English. This subtitling project is expected to help students sharpen their translation skills while learning linguistic and cultural aspects of both Indonesian as the source language (SL) and English as the target language (TL) in this study. In addition, students are also expected to have more practices on the technical aspects of subtitle to convey the message in the limited time and space by applying existing subtitle software. The data of this study were taken from students’ translations in Subtitling class. The data were analyzed descriptively to identify the strategy used by students based on Gottlieb's ten subtitle strategies and the technical constraints they commonly faced in making the subtitle. The results of this study indicate that students generally apply all of these strategies with varying frequencies and linguistics-related problems. Transcription strategy is the most frequent strategy applied by the students. This study also shows that students still struggle with the technical aspects related to cueing duration, rhythm, and division of subtitle which are sometimes less synchronous and eventually distracted viewers’ convenience

Abstract

This article discusses English vocabulary learning medium for young learners through songs and stories inspired by the implementation of a community service program at the Pondok Kasih Orphanage, Salatiga. It aims to attract interest and motivate children to learn English. Research and Development method is used for the development of 4D (Define, Design, Develop, and Dissemination) by observation and documentation as the data collection techniques. The existing data are analyzed descriptive qualitatively. English Vocabulary media developed in this program is in the form of an audiobook which contains Indonesian children's songs that are translated into English and created in the form of stories. This medium is needed to attract and motivate children in learning English vocabulary in orphanages and young children learning communities.

Abstract

This study aims at examining politeness strategies in the utterances of actors and actresses in the Johnny English film and determine the accuracy of the translation both grammatically and pragmatically using two versions of fansub translations. The data sources of this research are in the form of Source Text (ST) taken from the Johnny English film subtitles as well as its two translated versions (TT) by two fansubs which are downloaded from the subscene. Data analysis was carried out by comparing the two versions of TT with the TS to determine and assess the politeness strategies of the actors, as well as how the fansubs translate speech acts with these politeness strategies descriptively. From the analysis of the data, it was found that in general there is a cross-strategy combination between different types of politeness, not in the same type of politeness, in each speech act. In addition, this study also reveals that the two translated versions of the two fansubs selected in this study can generally produce surface-accurate translations, but do not always produce the same politeness effect.Keywords: Fansub, Johnny English, politeness strategy, speech acts, translation

Abstract

This study explores how dialogue in “The Yellow Wallpaper” reflects the protagonist’s psychological distress and analyzes the category shifts in its translation from English to Indonesian. This study applies Catford’s (1965) translation shift theory, this study identifies structural, class, unit, and intra-system shifts in the Indonesian translation by Lystianingtyas Putri Alfani (2021). A descriptive qualitative method is used to classify these shifts and analyze their impact on the depiction of psychological distress in the translated text. The analysis is further supported by Hans Selye’s General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS) theory, which categorizes psychological distress into three stages: alarm, resistance, and exhaustion. The findings reveal that grammatical differences between English and Indonesian influence how the protagonist’s emotions are conveyed. Structural, class, unit, and intra-system shifts in translation play a role in preserving or altering the intensity of psychological distress. This study contributes to translation and literary studies by highlighting the challenges of translating emotional nuances and encouraging further reearch on translation strategies in literary texts that depict a character’s psychological condition.

Abstract

Peran pariwisata dalam mengembangkan perekonomian masyarakat di berbagai tempat sangat besar, seperti halnya yang terjadi di desa wisata Tingkir Lor. Letak geografis dan beragamnya potensi yang dimiliki desa Tingkir Lor menjadikannya sebagai desa wisata pertama di Salatiga. Perkembangan desa wisata Tingkir Lor tidak terlepas dari peran kelompok sadar wisata (Pokdarwis) yang mengkoordinir kegiatan dan program-program yang berkaitan dengan penyediaan layanan wisata di Tingkir Lor. Salah satu upaya pokdarwis untuk menyampaikan informasi sekaligus promosi berupa website yang dirintis pada tahun 2015  dan sampai saat ini masih memerlukan pengembangan. Untuk memperkaya isi konten website desa wisata Tingkir Lor tersebut, tim PkM Program  Studi Sastra Inggris yang terdiri dari dua mahasiswa dan tiga dosen melakukan program pengabdian kepada masyarakat untuk menjawab kebutuhan masyarakat khususnya warga Tingkir Lor. Kegiatan PkM ini terintegrasi dengan kelas Travel Writing yang menghasilkan artikel bahasa Inggris tentang tujuh UMKM di desa wisata Tingkir Lor yang kemudian disunting dan diterjemahkan ke dalam bahasa Indonesia oleh Tim PkM. Hasil tulisan tersebut diunggah di website desa wisata Tingkir Lor. Melalui pendampingan dalam mengembangkan konten website desa wisata Tingkir Lor diharapkan dapat meningkatkan kesadaran masyarakat Tingkir Lor untuk memperkenalkan potensi desa yang beragam serta kearifan lokal yang masih belum terekspose, yang pada akhirnya bermanfaat untuk meningkatkan kesejahteraan masyarakat.

Abstract

Despite the extensive research on collocation translation, studies examining the influence of translation techniques on translation quality—specifically accuracy, acceptability, and readability—are scarce. This study provides an in-depth analysis of the impact of translation techniques on three aspects of lexical collocation translation quality and offers pertinent insights into evaluating translator competence. Employing a qualitative approach, this research identifies translation patterns within a broader context. Content analysis and Focus Group Discussions (FGD) are utilized to gather and validate two primary types of data: linguistic data in the form of lexical collocations from the subtitles of the film Elemental: Forces of Nature, and translation data including translation techniques and their quality. The collected data is analyzed using Spradley's (1980) analytical model as adapted by Santosa (2017), which encompasses domain, taxonomic, componential, and cultural theme analysis. Findings indicate that the dominance of techniques such as established equivalence, transposition, and modulation significantly contributes to high translation quality, assessed in terms of accuracy (2.8), acceptability (2.89), and readability (2.89). These findings highlight the significance of translator proficiency in managing lexical collocations and present substantial implications for EFL instruction in tackling the difficulties of collocation translation. The TQA instrument in this study assists educators in recognizing and correcting prevalent errors in collocation translation, thereby enhancing students' proficiency in translating intricate texts and fostering critical thinking skills related to source texts and their translations.
