Abstract

In facing increasingly tight industrial competition, MSMEs are required to implement the right business strategy to maintain their existence and increase their competitiveness. This study aims to apply strategic management to MSMEs of Kendang Jimbe craftsmen UD. Karya Mandiri in Blitar City using the SWOT method and Quantitative Strategic Planning Matrix (QSPM). SWOT analysis is used to identify internal factors in the form of strengths and weaknesses, as well as external factors in the form of opportunities and threats that affect business performance, while QSPM is used to determine priority strategies based on their level of attractiveness. This study uses a quantitative descriptive approach with data collection techniques through observation, interviews, and questionnaires to owners, employees, and consumers of UD. Karya Mandiri. The results of the analysis show that the main strength of this MSME lies in high product quality and good reputation, while its main weakness is the limited digital promotion. Opportunities that can be utilized are the increasing interest of the international market in traditional musical instruments, while threats include fluctuations in raw material prices and competition from similar products. Based on the IFE and EFE matrix analysis, UD. Karya Mandiri's position is in quadrant I in the SWOT diagram, which shows the potential to implement an aggressive strategy through expansion. The priority strategy resulting from the QSPM is export optimization by utilizing product quality, which obtained a Total Attractiveness Score (TAS) of 3.42. This strategy is expected to expand market share while strengthening the Kendang Jimbe brand image in the global market. Academically, this study contributes to the application of strategic management in culture-based MSMEs, as well as offering practical recommendations that can be used as a reference for similar MSMEs in responding to modern market challenges sustainably.

Abstract

Brick production in traditional micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) often exhibits inconsistent quality. This condition leads to various physical defects in the final products and reduces the proportion of saleable bricks. The main problems identified include broken, burnt, and cracked defects. This study aims to analyze the dominant types of defects, identify their root causes, and formulate practical improvement actions applicable to MSMEs. The research employs a Pareto diagram to determine defect priorities, a fishbone diagram to identify root causes, and the 5W+1H analysis as a systematic tool for developing improvement actions. The Pareto analysis indicates that broken defects are the most dominant, accounting for 42% of total defects, followed by burnt defects at 38% and cracked defects at 20%. The fishbone analysis reveals that defects are primarily caused by unbalanced raw material composition, the absence of firing temperature measuring instruments, and uncontrolled drying processes. The 5W+1H analysis proposes improvement actions, including the use of firing temperature measurement tools, raw material measuring instruments, and the reorganization of the drying process to ensure greater stability and consistency. The study concludes that simple but well-controlled interventions in material mixing, firing, and drying stages can effectively reduce defect rates and improve the overall quality of brick production in MSMEs.

Abstract

Small and medium-sized furniture industries rely heavily on the reliability of production machinery to maintain consistent product quality and ensure smooth manufacturing processes. However, maintenance practices in the SME sector are still predominantly reactive, which can increase downtime, reduce product quality, and accelerate component wear. This study aims to analyze the implementation of Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM) on modern wood planing machines at UD Mitra Usaha Ngunut, Tulungagung, through monitoring of temperature, vibration, and noise parameters. A case study approach was employed using observation, interviews, and documentation analysis. The results indicate that CBM implementation significantly extended component service life, as evidenced by an increase in planer blade lifespan from an average of 6 months to 8–9 months (33–50%), carbon brush lifespan by 25–30%, and armature, bearing, and fan belt lifespan by 20–40%, depending on operating conditions. In addition, CBM reduced average operating temperature by 8–12%, decreased vibration intensity by up to 30%, and maintained noise levels within safe limits. CBM implementation was also shown to reduce production downtime by up to 35% and improve maintenance cost efficiency. These findings demonstrate that CBM is effective in enhancing machine reliability and furniture product quality in small and medium-sized industries.
