Abstract

This study aims to develop a computer-based interactive Genetics project guide e-book to enhance undergraduate biology students’ cognitive learning outcomes. This development was carried out because there had been no available written guidebook for the Genetics project, which resulted in non-optimum project implementation. The content in the e-book consists of a description of material related to Drosophila melanogaster, descriptions and videos of general procedures, PjBL-based learning activities, and quizzes. Lee and Owen’s development model was used in this study which consisted of 4 stages, (1) multimedia need assessment and analysis; (2) multimedia instructional design; (3) multimedia development and implementation; and (4) multimedia evaluation. Before being implemented, the e-book was validated by material experts, learning media experts, and Genetics lecture. The effectiveness of the e-book in enhancing cognitive learning outcomes was measured using the ANCOVA test. The results of the e-book effectiveness test showed a significant difference between the control and experimental classes. These results indicate that the computer-based interactive e-book is valid, practical, and effective for use in the learning process of the Genetics project.

Abstract

Critical thinking skills bears a fundamental role in students’ thinking process and achievement. Meanwhile, the cornerstone of critical thinking is a metacognitive activity that has a substantial function in measuring and evaluating the obtained information, as well as learning from the experience. This study aims to examine students’ critical thinking and metacognitive skills before and after they participate in the PBL classroom using a project guide e-book for the genetic one course. The student’s critical thinking skills were assessed using written tests using open-ended question items. Further, the obtained scores were analyzed using paired t-test. The data analysis suggested an increase in students’ metacognitive and critical thinking skills after they attended the PBL class using the PBL-based project guide e-book for genetic 1. This increase was shown from the 0.000< α (α = 0,05) significance score of paired t-test. Thus, the PBL-based project guide e-book for the genetic 1 course is capable of enhancing students’ metacognitive and critical thinking skills.

Abstract

The Drosophila Climbing Assay (DCA) is an essential assay for disease and other biological studies. This systematic literature review (SLR) aims to analyze DCA's distribution, treatment, and contribution during the 21st Century. VosViewer was also involved in analyzing the bibliometric and gap analysis in related studies. By using the Scopus database and limiting document types to journal articles, a total of 183 documents have been successfully collected in this SLR. After going through a selection process based on inclusion and exclusion criteria and eligibility assessment through the PRISMA procedure, 163 articles remain that can be analyzed. Behaviour, model, activity, expression, lifespan, and disease are terms that often equate to studies involving the DCA procedure. The U.S., China, and India are the three countries that most frequently report DCA. DCA has been involved intensively in behaviour, Parkinson's, and nervous system research. The co-occurrence analysis resulted in 5 clusters, and the DCA procedure to study the impact of nutrient stress and nanoparticles resulted from the identified gap analysis.

Abstract

This community service activity aimed to enhance the capacity of educators at similar early childhood education units Aster 131 Jember in applying sensory integration stimulation through a multisensory approach—specifically, brain gym activities accompanied by regional songs. The program was initiated in response to the diverse developmental conditions of the students and the teachers’ limited access to media for introducing art and local culture. Therefore, an innovative learning strategy was needed to support both inclusive education and cultural introduction. The activity was carried out in five stages: initial survey, awareness-raising session, training of trainers (ToT), implementation of pre-learning activities with students, monitoring, and post-intervention evaluation. Data were collected through pre- and post-tests for teachers and a satisfaction survey administered after the program. The results indicated an increase in teachers’ understanding of the importance of sensory integration in early childhood, improvement in their skills in implementing brain gym activities, and active student participation in pre-learning sessions that combined motor skills and local cultural elements. The satisfaction survey showed that teachers found this method enjoyable, easy to apply, and relevant to children's needs. This initiative recommends the implementation of culturally grounded multisensory approaches as an effective strategy to support inclusive and high-quality early childhood education.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to develop Google Sites-based digital learning media integrated with EduCanva to improve students' collaboration skills in agro industrial schools. The research method uses a research and development design with the ADDIE model, which includes the stages of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. Data were collected through validation sheets, questionnaires, tests, interviews, and observations, then analyzed based on validity, practicality, and effectiveness. Expert validation results showed a percentage of 97.22% from subject matter experts, 84.375% from media experts, and 84.375% from learning experts in the highly valid category. The practicality test obtained a 100% response from teachers and a 92.29% response from students, both of which were categorized as very practical. The effectiveness test showed an increase in learning outcomes with an N-gain value of 0.53 (moderate category) and an increase in student collaboration skills of 11.38% from cycle I to cycle II, which was categorized as fair to good. These findings prove that Google Sites-based learning media integrated with EduCanva is feasible, practical, and effective for use in learning. The novelty of this research lies in the combination of two digital platforms that are rarely studied in the context of biology learning in agro industrial areas. This media not only improves conceptual understanding but also strengthens collaboration skills as an important 21st-century competency.

Abstract

Bisphenol-A (BPA) is classified as an endocrine-disrupting chemical that is widely found in everyday food. However, various studies have reported inconsistent results regarding the effects of this exposure on behavior. This study aimed to evaluate how dose, genetic background, and duration of exposure interact to shape behavioral responses in Drosophila melanogaster exposed to BPA. Three strains (Wild-type, white-eye, and black-body) were cultured on a medium containing 0, 0.25, and 0.5 mg/mL BPA for two generations. Before exposure (G0), after the first generation of exposure (G1), and after the second generation of exposure (G2), three behaviors were measured: larval crawling speed, number of larval contractions, and larval exploration distance. Repeated-measures ANOVA revealed a non-monotonic pattern in behavioral responses. Each behavior exhibited distinct sensitivities to treatment factors, and complex interactions were observed between genetic factors, dose, and time (generation). Furthermore, the effects of BPA are not general but rather specific to the type of behavior observed. Generational effects are evident in some behavioral data. In addition, fly strain plays a role in determining the effect of exposure on behavioral responses.

Abstract

Teaching materials designed for creative thinking skills are very important because they guide students to develop innovative problem-solving skills and think outside the box. The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of effective teaching materials in supporting creative thinking skills-based learning, and to identify the essential components that must be present in teaching materials to develop these skills. This study is a systematic literature review that describes teaching materials in creative thinking skills-based learning in the field of biology education. This study synthesizes 11 of 42 articles published between 2021–2024 in Sinta 2–4 journals obtained based on the formulation of the problem. The study results consistently demonstrate the dominance and crucial role of digital-based teaching materials in significantly enhancing students' creative thinking skills. These digital resources are uniquely designed with embedded features like multimedia integration, Problem-Based Learning (PBL) scenarios, and open-ended questions, thereby creating a highly interactive, flexible, and relevant learning environment aligned with 21st-century demands. The efficacy of these digital tools is strongly reinforced through their integration with active learning strategies such as PBL and Inquiry-Based Learning, This finding offers significant novelty by providing empirical evidence that locally-adapted digital products are a primary catalyst for pedagogical transformation. The practical implication is that educators must shift their focus from mere information delivery to designing rich learning experiences that explicitly demand students to generate, test, and validate their own creative ideas, preparing them for future complexity.
