Abstract

Background: Vocabulary is an important aspect of learning English for students, Mastering vocabulary allows students to understand English and to produce sentences easily. This research aims at improving students’ vocabulary mastery by implementing Problem-Based Learning (PBL) Model. Methods: It applied Classroom Action Research. The sample was 17 students of eleventh grade at SMA Utama Widya Pasraman Wira Dharma Palu. The research was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consists of planning, action, observation and reflection. The researcher employed some instruments to collect data, the instruments were test, observation checklist and field notes. Result: The result of data analysis indicated that the percentage of students who passed score above KKM which is 70 in cycle 1 was 47.06 percent or 8 students. In cycle 2, the result increased to 82.35 percent or 14 students. It significantly increased 35.29 percent compared to cycle 1. Conclusion: Problem-Based Learning (PBL) is effective to improve students’ vocabulary mastery of grade XI students at SMA Utama Widya Pasraman Wira Dharma Palu.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out how well the Dictogloss technique helps class VIII students at MTs Negeri 2 Parigi improve their listening comprehension. The Dictogloss technique's efficacy in enhancing listening comprehension is the primary research question. This quantitative study employed a quasi-experimental research design with a pre-test, treatment, and post-test with two classes designated as the experimental class and control class. The member in this test was eighth grade understudies. The researcher used a pretest and a posttest to gather data. SPSS version 23 was used to analyze the data that were collected. Students in the experimental class scored 53.83 higher on the posttest on average than students in the control class (42.22). The independence sample t-test revealed that the sig (2 tailed) value (0.000) was less than 0.05. This demonstrates the acceptance of the alternative hypothesis. Subsequently, the analyst presumed that the Dictogloss technique is successful in further developing the listening understanding of class VIII understudies at MTs Negeri 2 Parigi.

Abstract

This study aims to enhance students’ speaking skills in an academic setting by applying the Team-based Learning Model and describe how they perceive the implementation of IDLE digital technology-based devices in the application of the team-based learning model. Mixed Method research is used in this investigation. An experimental method was used to collect quantitative data, applying the Team-based Learning model to teach speaking skills to two student groups, which were selected using a probability sampling technique. Questionnaires and oral tests were used to gather quantitative data, while qualitative data was collected through focus group discussions and interviews. The quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive statistics with SPSS for Windows, and the qualitative data, which focuses on the problems and the objectives of the research, was analyzed using Content Analysis. The results of the data analysis show more students passed the Speaking in Academic Context Course than the students did in the previous academic years. The passing scores are between 71 to 76 and 86 to 100, or grades B (Good) and A (Very Good). According to the findings of data analysis on student perceptions obtained from questionnaires, students used several IDLE digital technology-based devices to complete projects, used the IDLE digital technology-based devices for fairly effective periods, between 30 minutes and over an hour per day, and used them for both receptive and productive activities individually and in group. The findings imply that the effective selection of teaching models and instructional media, especially the application of IDLE digital technology-based devices, is needed to motivate students to learn individually and in groups.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out whether the use of Context Clues strategy is effective to improve students’ reading comprehension. The population of this research was the eighth-grade students of SMPN 20 Sigi. The sample was selected by using a purposive sampling technique. There were two groups selected, i.e. class VIII B was the experimental group, and class VIII C was the control group. The data were obtained by using a test of reading comprehension. Both groups were asked to do the test twice as pre-test and post-test. The experimental group got the higher score than the control group after the treatment. To get the deviation score, the researchers calculated each student’s pre-test and post-test scores. From the result of the score deviation, the researchers calculated the mean deviation of both classes to get sum-square deviation score. Then, the researchers continued using the result to find out the tcounted using the ttest formula. After analyzing the data, the result showed that the tcounted (4.3) is higher than the ttable (1.686). It indicates that Context Clues strategy is effective to improve reading comprehension of the eighth grade students of SMPN 20 Sigi.

Abstract

The idea of this research was based on the researcher’s experiences. Songs have a big role in helping the researchers to increase the vocabulary mastery so that the purpose of the study was to find out the use of English song in improving students’ vocabulary mastery. In conducting this reseach, researchers took the 2019 batch English students in Tadulako University as the respondent. While the researchers used purposive sampling to take 30 students as the sample. in order to answer the research questions, this study used the questionnaire. The researchers distributed the questionnaire to the students by using Google form. Based on the research findings, it could be seen in the responds of the participants. The participants found that every aspect in songs were able to be used to help them to have better development on their listening skill and even on the language elements (pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar).
