Abstract

The aim of this study was to find out the emotional experiences of students in online learning English using an online platform in the middle of Covid-19. The research was a single case study. Data were garnered from the results of interviews and documents. The participants in this study were three students at a senior high school in Luwuk, Central Sulawesi. The researcher analyzed the data thematically as proposed by Braun Clarke (2006). The finding showed that online learning English affected the emotional experiences of the students. The students experienced a positive emotion, i.e happiness. The happiness feeling was driven by the provision of feedback and explanation by teachers before giving tasks, allowing the students to send their tasks on the platform they wanted, explaining the materials through Zoom Application, and did not provide tasks in each meeting. However, they also experienced negative emotions such as frustration, anger, and anxiety in English learning using an online platform. They perceived frustration because online English learning was difficult for them. In this case, they had to purchase internet quota, did not meet in person with the teacher, had limitations of time, felt bored due to frequent use of Zoom Meeting, experienced many disturbances, such as; their smartphones’ memory filled up fast because of getting many files from their teachers. Consequently, the negative emotions decreased the students’ time invested and the amount of knowledge gained from the learning process. The study implies that learning English using an online platform influenced students’ emotions

Abstract

Learning Management System (LMS) platform is currently popularly used by universities or institutions as an e-learning platform based. Currently, it may be utilized successfully as a platform to engage students in a classroom context. This study aims to determine the use of the learning management system (LMS) in English language learning based on the analysis of students' perceptions and to establish whether the platforms used contributed to the learning goals in the English Department at Tadulako University. The research design utilizes the descriptive qualitative research method. The finding of the study indicated that learners expressed both sides of the usage of the LMS platform in English language learning; effective and impractical perception. It is effective because the LMS platform improved their comprehension, promoted independent learning, inspired students to complete all tasks and quizzes, and eventually allowed students to achieve good learning outcomes. Meanwhile, for impractical usage, the LMS platform has network instability and limited opportunity for real-time discussion and gets immediate feedback from lecturers.  However, the benefits of the LMS platform outweigh its drawbacks.

Abstract

Background: The objective of writing instruction is to equip students with the ability to proficiently comprehend and produce various types of texts, such as monologues, paragraphs, or essays. So, finding and applying appropriate teaching methods to teach writing skills is necessary. Methods: The subjects of this research were the students at grade VIII of SMP Negeri 3 Bambalamotu that consisted of 22 students. This research was Classroom Action Research (CAR) covering plan, action, observation, and reflection. This research was carried out in two cycles. The first meeting focused on explanation of the materials through the syntax of Genre-Based Approach; 1. BKOF (Building Knowledge of the Field), 2. MCOT (Modeling Construction of the Text), 3. JCOT (Join construction of the Text) and 4. ICOT (Independent Construction of the Text). And the second meeting focused on evaluation. Results: The data of this research were obtained from observation, field notes, and writing test. In the initial test of cycle 1, it was evident that the students did not meet the success standards as they struggled to write descriptive paragraphs. However, the test results in cycle 2 revealed that the introduction of the GBA (Guided-By-Approach) effectively enhanced the students' writing abilities. By following the stages outlined in the GBA, the challenges faced by students in writing can be reduced. Conclusion: three key elements of the GBA, namely collaboration, joint construction, and independent construction, contribute to the potential for improvement in students' writing skills.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find the effect of problem-based learning to the speaking ability of the tenth grade students at SMK Muhammadiyah 1 Palu. This research employed experimental research of quasi-experimental design. The samples were the students of X Farmasi as the experimental group and the students of X TKJ A as the control group. They were selected using convenience sampling technique. The data were collected through pretest and posttest analyzed by using t-test formula to compare the mean score of the experimental and control groups. The result of the data analysis shows that t-table (1.968) higher than t-value (0.96), so the hypothesis is rejected. It means problem-based learning has no effect significantly to the students speaking ability. That caused by several factors such as situation, teaching implementation, and students participation.
