Abstract

The guppy fish is a type of ornamental fish commodity that is widely cultivated, especially male guppies with advantages such as varied colors, shapes and patterns so that they are more in demand. The purpose of this study was to determine the optimal dose of goat testicle extract against the masculinization process of guppies (Poecilia reticulata). The design method used was a Completely Randomized Design with four treatments and replicated doses were 0 ml/l, 3 ml/l. 6ml/l and 9 ml/l goat testicular extract with 24-hour immersion. The broodstock of guppies was then maintained in different containers for two days, and the spawning process was carried out en masse with a ratio between males and females 1:2 for four days and given natural food 2x a day. The fry fed was born and then reared for 63 days with artificial feed, namely Artemia sp. and silkworms. The results obtained that the administration of goat testicular extract had affected the masculinization of guppies. Administration with a dose of 9 ml/l resulted in the highest male sex ratio of 69.13±5.92% and survival rate of 90.16±10.00%.

Abstract

Abstract

Rice bran is being fermented using Aspergillus niger in order to increase its usage as a raw material for the catfish diet. This research aims to evaluate the potentials of rice bran fermented with A. niger to replace soybean meal in catfish Clarias sp diet. There were two research stages, first the fermentation test of A. niger on rice bran that used a completely randomized factorial design consisting of 2 factors, namely the dose of A. niger (0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, and 2 g/100 g) and incubation time (0. 24 and 48 hours). Secondly, the substitution test of soybean meal with fermented rice bran on five different of substitution levels (0, 15, 20, 35, and 40%) in the catfish diet. The results showed that the fermentation of A. niger of 2 % with an incubation period of 24 hours in rice bran resulted in the smallest crude fiber and fraction content, and increased protein and amino acid including serine, threonine, alanine, methionine, isoleucine, and lysine. The specific growth rate in the substitution treatment of 0-20% was significantly (P<0.05) higher than that of 35-40%. There was also no difference (P>0.05) in the growth performance of catfish in the 0 to 20% substitution treatment. Also, replacing soybean meal with fermented rice bran up to 20% did not have a negative effect on the growth performance of catfish. It was concluded that fermented rice bran could be used as raw material for catfish.

Abstract

Nannochloropsis oculata is one of the single-celled microalgae that has been commonly cultured in the marine fish culture sector as zooplankton feed which has high nutritional content. To support growth and reproduction, the availability of nutrients in N. oculata culture media needs to be considered. This study aims to determine the effect of the best liquid organic fertilizer (POC) duckweed (L. minor) on cell population growth in N. oculata culture. The method used in this research is an experimental method using Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 5 treatments, namely P0 (TSP 10 mg + ZA 40 mg + urea 45 mg) as a control treatment, P1 (POC duckweed 5%), P2 (POC duckweed 10%), P3 (POC duckweed 15%), and P4 (POC duckweed 20%) were repeated 3 times in each treatment. The initial density of N.oculata cells was 2 x 106 cells/ml in a culture media volume of 1000 ml. Growth was observed every day for 14 days. The results showed that the POC concentration of 10% duckweed can be used as an alternative to inorganic fertilizers (TSP, ZA, and urea) because it can increase cell population growth by 30.92 ± 1.84 cells/ml at the peak of the exponential phase, as well as the value of the growth rate. cells 0.38 ± 0.03 cells / ml / day and cell generation time of 43.88 ± 3.24 hours were not significantly different (p> 0.05) with P0 treatment (TSP, ZA, and urea). The range of water quality parameters in the culture media during the study were temperature 25-33oC, pH 4.89-8.40, salinity 25-38.33 ppt, and DO 4.07-7.27 ml / l. The measured value of water quality in culture media was still within the tolerance limits of N. oculata cells so that cells could still grow and divide.

Abstract

Abstract

Probiotics have long been applied in aquaculture and have shown positive effects on fish and shrimp. This research aimed to evaluate the effect of probiotic Bacillus NP5 in promoting the growth of catfish (Clarias sp.). Five doses of Bacillus NP5 with three replicates were used, namely 0% probiotic (control), 0.5% probiotic, 1% probiotic, 1.5% probiotic, and 2% probiotic (g/100 g feed). The results showed that the application of probiotics in catfish feed promoted better growth performance compared to the control. Total digestibility and protease enzyme activities were significantly highest in the 1% probiotic treatment. The specific growth rate was highest in the 1% probiotic treatment (2.67 ± 0.18% day⁻¹), followed by 2% probiotic (2.63 ± 0.02% day⁻¹), 1.5% probiotic (2.42 ± 0.07% day⁻¹), 0.5% probiotic (2.29 ± 0.14% day⁻¹), and the control (1.60 ± 0.01% day⁻¹). The addition of 1% Bacillus NP5 as a probiotic in catfish feed showed the best results for protease enzyme activity, protein digestibility, total digestibility, final weight, specific growth rate, weight gain, feed efficiency, and protein efficiency ratio compared to other probiotic doses.
