Abstract

Balinese on social media reflects an important linguistic development because it functions not only as a means of communication, but also as a space for cultural expression in the digital era. Although speech act studies have been widely conducted, research on Balinese speech act forms in TikTok  video texts remains limited. This study aims to describe and analyze speech act forms in Balinese TikTok  video texts created by @madewangi. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach using five purposively selected TikTok  videos as the data source. Data were collected through observation, note-taking, transcription, and translation, and were then analyzed pragmatically by examining the relationship between utterance forms and their communicative functions. The results show that, out of 49 analyzed utterances, 35 were direct speech acts and 14 were indirect speech acts. The dominance of direct speech acts indicates that communication in Balinese TikTok  videos tends to emphasize clarity of meaning so that it can be easily understood by viewers, while indirect speech acts appear as strategies of politeness, satire, or implicit intention. This study contributes to pragmatic studies by showing how Balinese is used in digital media as a linguistic practice that continues to carry social and cultural dimensions.

Abstract

This study highlights the importance of understanding students’ speaking difficulties in order to improve the quality of English language teaching, particularly in junior high school. Many students still face problems in expressing their ideas orally, even when they understand the material. These difficulties indicate that speaking is not only influenced by linguistic ability but also by emotional and cognitive factors. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the types of students’ speaking difficulties and the factors affecting those difficulties in class VII-B SMP Negeri 12 Denpasar. This study employed a descriptive qualitative research design. The data were collected through classroom observation, interviews with one teacher and three students, and documentation. The analysis was conducted using qualitative data analysis techniques, including data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The study was supported by two main theories, namely Humanistic Learning Theory and Cognitive Theory, to explain both emotional and mental aspects of speaking difficulties. Data validity was ensured through triangulation of sources and techniques. The findings revealed that students experienced several speaking difficulties, including fear of making mistakes, difficulty in speaking in front of the class, hesitation when speaking, limited vocabulary, and difficulties in grammar and pronunciation. These difficulties were influenced by psychological factors, linguistic factors, cognitive factors, and external factors. These factors were interconnected and contributed to students’ low speaking performance. The study concludes that students’ speaking difficulties are complex and influenced by multiple factors that must be addressed simultaneously.

Abstract

Balinese, as an element of Balinese cultural identity, is experiencing symptoms of maintenance shift among the urban younger generation due to the dominance of Indonesian, despite being reinforced through regional language preservation regulations. This condition is of particular concern at the Vocational High School (SMK) level in the health sector in urban areas such as Denpasar, which has not been widely researched and possesses vocational curriculum characteristics different from those of general schools. This study aims to describe the language attitudes of students at SMKS Kesehatan Bali Medika Denpasar toward the Balinese language based on three indicators-namely language loyalty, language pride, and norm of language awareness-while also identifying the factors that influence them. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through an open-ended questionnaire distributed to 307 students (50% of the population of 614 students), in-depth interviews with 12 selected informants, and field observations, then analyzed qualitatively using an interactive analysis model and validated through source and technique triangulation. The results show that students' language loyalty is relatively low, marked by the dominance of code-mixing and full code-switching to Indonesian in institutional domains; language pride, on the other hand, is relatively high and cuts across ethnic backgrounds, driven by the instrumental value of Balinese in healthcare services; while norm of language awareness regarding Balinese speech levels (sor singgih basa Bali) remains low and largely stems from limited linguistic competence. These findings indicate that students' language attitudes are fragmented across the affective, conative, and cognitive components, so that strengthening positive language attitudes requires strategies that target not only cultural pride but also the habituation of active language use and the contextual reinforcement of Balinese language competence.
