Abstract

Mangrove ecosystem in Muna Regency, includingKembarMaminasa village, has been started to be exploited bythe local community. Unfortunately information about mangrove status and their condition are still negligible. The result of this study is useful to provide basic information for sustainable management of mangroveecosystems. A study of mangrove community structure was conducted at the Tembe River inKembar Maminasavillage, from September to November 2013. Mangrove community structure was analyzed using non-metricmultidimensional scaling technique and Bray-Curtis cluster analysis, while the most contributed species todifference of fish community structure was analyzed using SIMPER (similarity of percentages) procedure. Thedifference between the community structure in three different substrates(muddy, mud-sandy, sand-muddy) wasanalyzed using ANOSIM. All the statistics analysis were carried out using PRIMER v6 software. The results ofthe study showed that there were seven species found in the Desa Kembar Maminasa and they tended todistribute differently among three different substrate, creating three slightly different zones of mangrove fromseaward to landward. The community structure of the mangrove trees were different among the three differentsubstrates. Similar results were found in community structure of mangrove saplings and mangrove seedlings. Key words: District Muna, community structure of mangrove, mangrove tree, mangrove saplings, mangroveseedlings.

Abstract

Abstract

Climate change and global warming cause massive damage to the environment. One of the major events that arethreatening the marine ecosystem is coral bleaching. Coral bleaching occurs when corals are exposed to above or belownormal temperatures. The aims of this study are to compare the resistance of Isopora palifera and Acropora hyacinthusfrom Karanrang Island to temperature stress. Four treatment temperatures (28ºC, 30ºC, 32ºC, and 34ºC) were tested toassess the role of temperature stress and bleaching to Isopora palifera and Acropora hyacinthus for 48-hours. Theabundance of zooxanthellae counted as the temperature stress variable. The results showed that there was a difference ofcoral response tothe treatment based on the time of experiment, after 48-hours experimentexposed at temperaturetreatment of 34°C the abundance of zooxanthellae from Isopora paliferawas 0,06 x105 cm-2 and the abundance ofzooxanthellae from Acropora hyacinthus is 0,18 x105cm-2. In comparison between species, Isoporapalifera taken fromKaranrang Island was more resistant to temperature stress thanAcroporahyacinthus.

Abstract

The research aims to record the types of shark utilization in Selayar Islands Regency, explore the spread and shark status of the Regency of Selayar Islands, and examine the sustainability status of shark utilization by fisherman in Selayar Islands. The research method was based on the assessment of EAFM indicator assessments to assess the performance of shark resource management on Tarupa Island, Rajuni Island, Polassi Island and Kayuadi Island Selayar Islands Regency with an indicator approach involving two domains, i.e (1) Fish resources and (2) Fishing technique. The methods of obtaining the data were survey by extracting the data through interviews/questionnaire. The sample was determined using purposive sampling technique. The results of the research indicate that the status of utilizing shark fishery in Selayar Islands Regency is currently in medium category. The main issues indicated are a decrease in catch size and the catch of sharks that are not feasible to catch (50% of catch <Lm). The domains that need to get primary attention in the management of sharks fisheries are the domains of fish resources and fishing technique. The efforts of management carried out in each fields are based on central issues that emerge. Connectivity efforts between communities and institutions are needed to produce functional fisheries management status so that the sustainability of shark resources in Selayar Islands Regency can be sustainable
