Abstract

Lubab al-Ta’wil fī Ma‘ani al-Tanzil by ‘Ala’ al-Din ‘Ali ibn Muhammad al-Khazin (d. 741 AH) is a significant classical tafsir work in Islamic scholarship. Compiled in the 8th century H, this work serves as a summarized version of al-Baghawi’s Ma‘alim al-Tanzil and al-Nasafi’s Madarik al-Tanzil, aiming to streamline complex commentaries while retaining their essential messages. This study explores the methodological framework employed by al-Khazin in interpreting the Qur’an, using a qualitative library research approach with content analysis as the primary method. The findings reveal that al-Khazin adopted the analytical (tahlili) method with a dominant reliance on transmitted reports (bi al-ma’tsur), though he also utilized rational interpretation (bi al-ra’y) where appropriate. His exegetical style reflects strong historical, legal, and spiritual dimensions. The distinctiveness of his tafsir lies in his meticulous hadith sourcing, critical stance toward unreliable isra’iliyyat, detailed elaboration on juridical issues, and integration of Sufi insights rooted in prophetic traditions. This research underscores the importance of a methodological reading of classical tafsir to bridge the gap between textual interpretation and contemporary contextual understanding. Keywords: Tafsir al-Khazin, tafsir methodology, classical exegesis, bi al-ma’tsur, historical approach.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the Islamic elements present in the traditional wedding customs of the Malay community in Riau. The study adopts a phenomenological case study method to investigate this cultural phenomenon. The findings reveal a strong integration of Malay customs and Islamic values within the Riau Malay culture. The preference for the term "nikah-kawin" among the Riau Malay community reflects the significance of both cultural traditions and religious values in their marriage institution. Furthermore, Islamic values such as respect for parents, prayer, and gratitude are also integrated into various Riau Malay customary ceremonies. Within this context, the research demonstrates how the Riau Malay culture exemplifies the harmonious fusion of religion and tradition, contributing to the formation of a strong identity and enriching positive values within the local community. To preserve and enhance the cultural heritage rooted in Islamic values, it is crucial to enhance the understanding and awareness of the importance of preserving the Riau Malay cultural heritage. Further comprehensive and inclusive research is warranted to deepen the understanding of this phenomenon.

Abstract

This article examines the integration and relationalization between the facts of revelation and scientific facts, focusing on the miracles of the Qur'an. The Qur'an, as the holy book of Islam, is often cited as containing verses with scientific knowledge that has only been revealed by modern science. This research aims to understand how verses of the Qur'an that are considered to contain scientific miracles can be explained and understood in the context of contemporary science. Through literature review and comparative analysis methods, this study finds that there are many verses in the Qur'an that implicitly and explicitly align with modern scientific discoveries in fields such as astronomy, embryology, and geology. The results show that the integration and relationalization between the facts of revelation and scientific facts not only strengthen spiritual beliefs but also enrich scientific understanding and open constructive dialogue between religion and science.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the pragmatic elements present in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) textbooks used in senior high schools in Pekanbaru, Indonesia. Specifically, it examines the coverage of speech acts, metapragmatic strategies, and contextual variables in two widely used textbooks: Buku Sarana Elektronik (BSE) and Pathway to English, for grades X, XI, and XII. The research employs a qualitative descriptive approach with document analysis techniques, drawing data from the textbooks and interviews with English teachers in Pekanbaru. The findings reveal that the coverage of speech acts in both textbooks is incomplete, with an overemphasis on directives such as commands, requests, and suggestions. These speech acts, often face-threatening, require higher pragmatic competence from learners, which the textbooks do not adequately support. Additionally, metapragmatic information provided in the textbooks is limited and focuses more on pragmalinguistics than sociopragmatic factors, leaving students underprepared for real-life communication where social norms and contextual variables such as power dynamics play a crucial role. The textbooks also lack diversity in contextual variables, with most dialogues featuring interactions between individuals of equal power and little social distance, reducing learners’ exposure to various social roles and communication contexts. The study concludes that both BSE and Pathway to English fail to provide sufficient pragmatic content and suggests that future textbook design should include a broader range of speech acts, metapragmatic strategies, and diverse social contexts to better develop learners' pragmatic competence. The findings have significant implications for improving the effectiveness of teaching materials in Indonesian EFL classrooms.
