Abstract

This qualitative case study investigates the integration of Cultural Intelligence (CQ) into Teaching English for Young Learners (TEYL) within Indonesia’s merdeka curriculum. As the curriculum emphasizes differentiated learning and character development, CQ plays a crucial role in equipping students with the intercultural competencies necessary in the globalized world. Data were collected from 15 English teachers in public and private junior high schools in Kota Magelang, using semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis. The findings reveal that although many teachers intuitively apply aspects of CQ, its implementation remains inconsistent due to the limited curriculum guidance, lack of professional training, and insufficient resources. Teachers identified key benefits, including improved communication, empathy, and global awareness. The study recommends the explicit integration of CQ frameworks into curriculum design and teacher training programs. By systematically embedding CQ into TEYL, merdeka curriculum can cultivate culturally competent, empathetic, and globally minded students from an early age.

This research has an objective to analyze and reveal the benefits of flouting the relevance maxim of Hillary Clinton's speech in the 2016 USA candidate presidential debate. The data consist of the debate transcript which was taken from the Washington Post website, and a video that could be watched on YouTube. They are analyzed by confirming the relevance of semantic answers to every question within the context of speech. In the end, there are nine findings of the benefits of flouting the relevance maxim, which consists of increasing positive self-impression, avoiding giving direct agreement to a sensitive issue, closing potential negative attacks, decreasing the rival's credibility, guessing truthfulness, beating the rival's credibility, increasing effort to show positive personal credibility, telling the rival's past negative history, and proposing indirect conclusion. The findings are the implication of the complex use of verbal speech that is combined with action. The formal situation of the debate supports the maximum benefit of every flouting relevance maxim. The main conclusion of this research is that flouting the relevance maxim only sometimes negatively impacts both a speaker and an interlocutor. The impact is influenced by complex factors such as the background of the occasion, past conditions, and passion for an interaction.

Abstract

This study examines the application of genre patterns in the "Results and Discussion" section of scientific articles written by lecturers at Universitas Tidar using the Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) framework. Through qualitative analysis, this study identifies five main genres—descriptive, expository, prescriptive, analytical, and argumentative—that are used strategically to improve clarity, coherence, and effectiveness of communication in scientific writing. Each genre is analyzed based on its linguistic features and its contribution to fulfilling the ideational, interpersonal, and textual functions in the IMRD structure. The results of the study indicate the important role of knowledge about genres in improving the quality of academic writing, especially in conveying complex ideas, establishing credibility, and ensuring a logical flow of information. This study emphasizes the importance of implementing a genre-based approach in teaching academic writing to help students and researchers produce well-structured and impactful scientific papers. By bridging linguistic theory and practical writing strategies, this study contributes to the development of genre literacy and academic communication skills.

Abstract

Social interaction is one important factor that influences the process and resulting quality of non-EFL students in English-speaking classes. It could both support and decrease them. This study investigated the social interaction influences on the non-EFL college students’ English-speaking process and results. It aims to find out which social determinants cause students to engage communicatively in speaking tasks. The research was conducted by applying the qualitative descriptive design that involved observing classroom conduct, making field notes, and analyzing interactional processes to explore how students and lecturers built a social environment. The findings reveal four main data points that affected the quality of interaction, including the student noise and side-talk, non-routine greetings and leave-takings, mobile phone interference beyond control, and the lecturer’s management techniques in the classroom. The condition had an impact on the atmosphere of emotions through how students feel confident, focused, attentive, and motivated to talk. In general, the results emphasize the necessity of transparent social routines, behavioral guidance, and regulation in digital use to foster a good speaking environment in Indonesian higher institutions. It is suggested that mastering these non-pedagogical phenomena will be crucial for minimizing affective barriers and achieving speaking betterment, particularly in the case of developing communicative confidence among non-English majors.
