Abstract

The Coronavirus (COVID-19) has brought suffering to almost people around the world. These situations lead people of all ages to take steps to protect themselves from the virus, including children. They need to learn about the virus that affects them and their community. Among the learning resources of Coronavirus to be learned by children, the researchers find the use of conceptual metaphors depicting the virus. Using the descriptive qualitative analysis and cognitive semantics approach, this article aims to analyze how Coronavirus is depicted through the conceptual metaphors. The data is taken from learning resources which are electronic books (e-book) and video published on Social Media. In analyzing the data, the researchers use the Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) proposed by Lakoff and Johnson (1980) and the mapping theory by Langacker (1987). The research results show that (1) the Coronavirus is mainly depicted as A HUMAN, and (2) COVID-19 Pandemic is also depicted as A WAR. The use of conceptual metaphor is helpful to help children understand the complex ideas about Coronaviruses in simple terms and to help them understand what is happening. The use of conceptual metaphors also will help the parents and caregivers explain the Coronavirus to children.

Abstract

Code switching nowadays is more of the norm than the exception for people who speak more than one language. In case of a foreign language teaching-learning process, both of students and teachers are commonly mixing the foreign language they learn with their mother (first) language, as found in English teaching-learning process at Public Senior High School, SMAN 1 Jamblang, in Cirebon regency, West Java, Indonesia. They usually switch English speech with their mother language, Cirebonese language. This paper aims to analyse the function of code switching in the English teaching-learning activity at SMAN 1 Jamblang and see how effective it is to help students’ understand the English subject. The data were collected by observation and documentation and then, analysed using Sociolinguistics approaches, namely social factors theory proposed by Holmes (2001), referring to switch code functions developed by Reyes (2004) and Ajmal (2010), who did the related studies. The research results show that the code switching has two functions, namely delivering the material effectively and managing the class. Furthermore, based on survey on the students at SMAN 1 Jamblang, it shows that more than 93% of respondents strongly agree that the use of code switching helps developing students’ understanding the English subject.

Abstract

Many applications and algorithms that were previously impossible to perform on a notebook, computer, or mobile phone may now be readily implemented thanks to growing sophisticated technology and increasingly powerful processing capabilities on computers. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is one technology that is gaining popularity for a variety of applications.
