Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of using the TikTok platform on the reading habits of MA Nurul Ichsan students. The background of this research is the increasing popularity of social media, which potentially shifts students’ traditional reading interest. The study employed a descriptive method with data collected through questionnaires and observations involving students of grades X, XI, and XII. The findings reveal that the majority of students experienced a decline in reading interest after actively using TikTok. A total of 90.4% of respondents reported decreased reading motivation, with 57.1% rarely reading books outside school hours, and 60% facing concentration difficulties after using the application. Furthermore, 80% of students preferred entertainment content over educational content. Although 5% of students felt motivated to seek reading material from TikTok content, the negative effects remain more dominant. This research highlights the importance of the roles of teachers and parents in guiding students to use social media wisely and in fostering consistent reading habits.

Abstract

Abstract

English is one of the most widely spoken international official languages worldwide. In Indonesia, English is used as a subject at various school levels. Teaching English itself is not an easy thing, so the role of media is very important in the learning process. One of the learning media that is often used and easy to find is textbooks. The purpose of this study was to determine the suitability of the textbook entitled Pathway to English with Tomlinson's theory. This research is a qualitative descriptive study with a focus on library research. The object of research is an English textbook entitled Pathway to English. The theory used to analyze is Tomlinson's theory. Data collection technique is obtained by in-depth observation of English textbooks. The technique of analyzing data is by reading, reducing data, presenting data, and verifying data. The results of this study indicate that the Pathway to English textbook meets the sixteen criteria contained in Tomlinson's theory. So that the textbook is declared fit for use as a learning medium. The author provides suggestions to several parties, including the teacher to pay more attention when choosing textbooks to be used during learning. To the publisher, it is suggested to publish quality books so that it can help the learning process to reaches the intended target.

Abstract

This study investigates students’ perceptions of the TikTok platform as a medium for enhancing English vocabulary learning at SMP Annida Krebetsenggrong Malang. The rapid growth of social media, particularly TikTok, has created new opportunities for integrating technology into language education. However, the effectiveness of TikTok for vocabulary development among learners with different proficiency levels remains underexplored. Therefore, this study aims to examine how students from basic and intermediate proficiency perceive the use of TikTok for vocabulary learning and to identify the challenges they encounter while using it as a learning medium. This study employed a qualitative descriptive. Five students were selected through purposeful sampling, consisting of three elementary-level and two intermediate-level learners who actively used TikTok for English learning. Data were collected through written proficiency tests and structured interviews. The results revealed that both basic and intermediate students generally perceived TikTok as an enjoyable and effective platform for learning new vocabulary. basic-level students emphasized that TikTok made vocabulary learning more interesting, creative, and easy to understand through short, visual, and engaging content. Intermediate students acknowledged similar benefits but also noted limitations, such as distractions from non-educational content and the short duration of videos, which hindered deeper understanding.

Abstract

This article explores the challenges and strategies that Generation Z teachers encounter in teaching English in the digital age. The method employed in this research is a case study approach, involving six English teachers from various schools as respondents. The objective of this research was to determine the challenges Gen Z teachers face in the English learning process and to explore their strategies for overcoming these obstacles. The findings reveal that Gen Z teachers face challenges, including classroom management issues, low student motivation, technological limitations, and the need to adapt to an independent curriculum. However, they can respond to these challenges through innovative strategies such as collaborative learning and gamification using digital technologies. Teachers also use platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, Google Classroom, and Quizizz to create interactive learning experiences that align with today's students' characteristics. This study highlights the unique role of Gen Z teachers as agents of change, who are adaptive, creative, and responsive to technological developments and the evolving needs of students. The findings provide essential input for education policy and the development of more contextualized teacher training.
