Abstract

This research aimed to find the types of signs using Peircean semiotic theory namely icon, index, and symbol in Banyumas batik motifs. The researchers were going to describe the Banyumas local values depicted in each of the batik motifs. Moreover, Banyumas local values were reflected from the explained batik motifs. This research was a descriptive qualitative research by applying embedded-case study. The research was limited on Banyumas batik motifs which contained natural symbols; they were Jahe Rajang, Lumbon, Babon Angrem, Peksi Gowok, and Serayuan. There were two types of data to be analyzed, namely primary and secondary data. There were two key informants that the researchers met and interviewed to obtain more reliable data. To gain the primary data, the researchers conducted some series of interview with the first informant, a Banyumas batik artisan who was very dedicated to maintain the existence of batik tulis (hand-painted batik). Meanwhile, to gain the secondary data, the researchers visited a Banyumas culture activist. The results show that Banyumas batik motifs are made with certain purposes and meanings. Each of the motifs analyzed in this research carries important signs. It reflects the values and beliefs adhered by the local people. Through these motifs and the appreciation of batik, Banyumas local value like Cablaka (straightforward, honest, and genuine) reflects the index as one type of sign.

Abstract

The discussion on English vocabulary teaching is not a new thing, especially when it is about the technique and method used in the teaching-learning process. The purpose of this paper is to disseminate the result of community service experience in teaching vocabulary for elementary students by using thematic songs. This activity is conducted to different grade students that belong to a reading community called Taman Baca Masyarakat Kudi that is located in one of Banyumas subdistricts. The use of songs is in accordance with our community service purpose that is to motivate the students that English is fun to learn. Teaching vocabulary especially to young learners should be fun and and the teacher should avoid monotonous activities. However, some teachers are still stuck in the convensional method, for example by asking students to memorize a stack of vocabulary items without taking into account student’s boredom in doing such task. Makalah ini bertujuan menyebarkan pengalaman dalam pengabdian kepada masyarakat dalam mengajarkan kosa kata dengan menggunakan lagu-lagu bertema untuk siswa sekolah dasar. Aktivitas ini dilaksanakan dalam sekelompok siswa sekolah dasar yang berasal dari kelas berbeda yang tergabung dalam komunitas baca bernama Taman Baca Masyarakat Kudi yang terletak di salah satu kecamatan Banyumas. Penggunaan lagu sesuai dengan tujuan pelayanan masyarakat kita, yaitu untuk memotivasi siswa bahwa bahasa Inggris itu menyenangkan untuk dipelajari. Lagu dianggap efektif untuk digunakan dalam mengajar anak-anak karena bisa memicu kreativitas dan rasa ingin tahu anak-anak terutama dalam kaitannya dengan proses pemerolehan kosakata.Kata kunci: pengajaran, kosakata, lagu tematik, bahasa Inggris

Abstract

The article discusses translation techniques applied in the translation of culture-specific concepts in the description text  of Museum Wayang dan Artefak Purbalingga. Culture-specific concept is one of the common types of non-equivalence at word level resulted from the absence of cultural concepts in the target language. To cope with this problem, a translator is provided with translation techniques proposed by many translation scholars. This research applied the theory of translation techniques proposed by Molina and Albir. Based on the analysis, the most frequently-used technique is borrowing technique. The technique is relatively common to apply in translating culturally-bound terms that do not have one-to-one correspondence. The most common non-equivalence problem at word level to find is problem of culture-specific concepts. It is because the text describes the puppets displayed there, and to be more specific, puppets are parts of Indonesian culture, a precious cultural heritage.  Therefore, many culturally-bound words or terms are kept original.

Abstract

This article discusses one of the forms of machine translation, the Instagram translation feature called “see translation”. The research is focused on the translation techniques applied by the machine in translating Banyumas batik motifs from Indonesian to English found in @batikantodjamil and @batk_rd. This topic is worth discussing since machine translation is now getting more developed and is projected to replace human translator. However, in some cases, for example in dealing with culturally-bound terms, machine translation cannot perform contextual knowledge as well as the human translator. this mini research was conducted by applying qualitative research with purposive sampling technique in which the researchers obtain the data by selecting two batik center Instagram accounts containing batik motif names in the captions. The result shows that there are three translation techniques applied by the Instagram translation features, namely literal, borrowing, and particularization. The most dominant technique to use is borrowing technique, and it shows a tendency that such cultural terms in the source language do not have one-to-one correspondence in the target language. In other words, the touch of human translator is very important in the post-editing process of translation by machine to make the translation more acceptable. However, if it is impossible to involve human translator, the Instagram administrator should enrich the machine with more contextual linguistic database to provide the users with better translation results.

Abstract

This research aims at analyzing translation techniques used by the translator in translating the booklet "West Java Calendar of Event 2020" from Indonesian into English. This booklet is published by the Department of Tourism and Culture, West Java. Specifically, this research highlights the translation of culturally bound terms in the booklet. The researchers are interested in analyzing this topic because cultural-bound terms are considered challenging to translate; the translators must understand the cultural background of the languages they are translating. Moreover, it is not likely that translators can find one-to-one correspondence for each cultural term in the text. This study applies a descriptive qualitative method since the data are in the form of text and the researchers also play a role as the key instrument in collecting the data, in this case through document examination. In this research, total sampling technique is applied since the researchers take all of the culturally bound terms in the booklet. The research begins with collecting the cultural terms from the booklet, classifying them into cultural terms categories based on Newmark’s theory of cultural category, and determining the translation techniques based on Molina and Albir’s theory. The result shows that the translator mainly employs borrowing, amplification, description, and established equivalent techniques. There is a tendency that the translator prefers those techniques because it is hard for the translator to find one-to-one correspondence of the terms in the target language. Hopefully, this research will be beneficial for translators in deciding the proper translation techniques in translating cultural terms.
