Abstract

The discussion on English vocabulary teaching is not a new thing, especially when it is about the technique and method used in the teaching-learning process. The purpose of this paper is to disseminate the result of community service experience in teaching vocabulary for elementary students by using thematic songs. This activity is conducted to different grade students that belong to a reading community called Taman Baca Masyarakat Kudi that is located in one of Banyumas subdistricts. The use of songs is in accordance with our community service purpose that is to motivate the students that English is fun to learn. Teaching vocabulary especially to young learners should be fun and and the teacher should avoid monotonous activities. However, some teachers are still stuck in the convensional method, for example by asking students to memorize a stack of vocabulary items without taking into account student’s boredom in doing such task. Songs are considered effective to be used in teaching children because they can trigger children’s creativity and curiousity especially in dealing with vocabulary acquisition.Keyword: teaching,vocabulary, thematic songs, English PENERAPAN LAGU-LAGU BERTEMA DALAM PENGAJARAN KOSAKATA UNTUK SISWA SEKOLAH DASAR DI TAMAN BACA MASYARAKAT KUDI GUNUNG CUNIL BANYUMASAbstrakPembahasan tentang pengajaran kosakata bahasa Inggris bukanlah hal yang baru, terutama bila menyangkut teknik dan metode yang digunakan dalam proses belajar mengajar. Makalah ini bertujuan menyebarkan pengalaman dalam pengabdian kepada masyarakat dalam mengajarkan kosa kata dengan menggunakan lagu-lagu bertema untuk siswa sekolah dasar. Aktivitas ini dilaksanakan dalam sekelompok siswa sekolah dasar yang berasal dari kelas berbeda yang tergabung dalam komunitas baca bernama Taman Baca Masyarakat Kudi yang terletak di salah satu kecamatan Banyumas. Penggunaan lagu sesuai dengan tujuan pelayanan masyarakat kita, yaitu untuk memotivasi siswa bahwa bahasa Inggris itu menyenangkan untuk dipelajari. Lagu dianggap efektif untuk digunakan dalam mengajar anak-anak karena bisa memicu kreativitas dan rasa ingin tahu anak-anak terutama dalam kaitannya dengan proses pemerolehan kosakata.Kata kunci: pengajaran, kosakata, lagu tematik, bahasa Inggris

Abstract

The purpose of this study were to find out the use of English in the stay permit section, and to find out the solution to deal with the obstacles of using English in the stay permit section to improve the quality of information services in the immigration office. The Author use several methods such as observation, literature studies, and interviews. The use of English in the stay permit information service is good enough but there are some additions so that the information to be conveyed can be fully conveyed by by giving information about stay permit requirements, immigration stay permit flow, and to fill out the forms. The obstacles and solutions such as limitations in international language, and information. The solution to this problem is to increase vocabulary, often practice listening to the accents of other countries, and using body language. The second is a limitation of information is by finding out in conveying information to provide good and clear information to visitors.

Abstract

In every zoo, there must always be informed, especially about animals. This information is very important because it is a source of knowledge for visitors who travel to a zoo. Serulingmas has 47 animals which are grouped into 20 mammals, 20 aves, and 7 reptiles. The information of the animals are written in Bahasa Indonesia. The purposes of this article are toexplain the process in creating animals information in English for Serulingmas Banjarnegara Interactive Zoo and to know the obstacle and solution in creating animals information in Serulingmas Banjarnegara Interactive Zoo. The methods used are observation, documentation, and producing practice.

Abstract

This article is entitled Translating “Persahabatan” from Indonesian Into English (A Wattpad Short Story by Ika Ayu Rahmawati). The “Persahabatan” short story is a teen fiction story published on the Wattpad app in 2020. This short story has been read by more than 24,000 users and voted about 301 times. The purposes of translating “Persahabatan” short story into English are to translate it from Indonesian into English, explain the process and the technique in the translation, and describe the difficulties and giving the solutions in the translation. This Wattpad short story is interesting to be translated in order to be found by Wattpad users from other countries and increase readers globally.

Abstract

The scarcity of cooking oil and the increase in its price in Indonesia put society under pressure instead of the fact that Indonesia was the world’s largest palm oil producer. Therefore, Iwan Fals, the singer who often expressed his criticism through a song, also released a sharp criticism song entitled “Minyak Goreng.” Since this song also functioned as a criticism, it contained some linguistic features that were referred to critic the government. This study analyzes Iwan Fals’ song entitled “Minyak Goreng” by using Fairclough’s critical discourse theories. The method used is qualitative with descriptive so that the researcher interprets the data in the lyric based on the happening phenomenon. The data are analyzed in three fields: linguistic features, text production, and social practice. This research shows that Fals uses some linguistic features such as pronouns, similes, metaphors, and probability phrases to express his criticism. Fals also put himself as the people of Indonesia who suffer from this cooking oil scarcity. Besides that, Fals also shows the anger of the people to the government. This research indicates that the text shows the relationship between language, power, and social construction.

Abstract

English language teaching (ELT) serves as a tool to teach students how to communicate in workplace. Character education taught in ELT can influence some of the ways students live in society, in terms of ethics, philosophy and principles. Moral education, as a part of character education, can be included in language learning and in character development in three important ways: integrated into school practice with an emphasis on literacy, socialized by moral content, and applied to course materials. This research provides description on developing human resources quality through character education. There are 38 respondents in this research, 36 students and 2 lecturers. They are chosen to obtain more objective data. The implementation of character education in teaching process happens from the planning to evaluating process. In planning, it shows that most students already know character education and its importance in higher education. In enacting process, most students implement moral values in their daily life. It makes their soft skill quality increase, both in personal and professional qualities. Last process is evaluating. In this process, some students think that the lecturers always help them internalize character education by implicitly including it in the problem sheet and the scoring rubrics.
