Abstract

Obesity and its complications are a major nutritional problem worldwide, broadly impacting various organ systems. It causes a negative effect on the risk of obesity-induced cardiovascular disease (CVD). Guidelines recommend MUFA in dietary therapy for obesity and CVD. However, little literature has focused on the potential of avocado as a nutraceutical in obesity-induced CVD, particularly related endothelial dysfunction. Therefore, a scoping review is required. The aim was to review the role of MUFA contained in the avocado diet on obesity-related CVD risk. This scoping review was performed using the 5-step Arkeys and O’Malelev framework and reported according to PRISMA ScR. Four electronic databases were searched systematically. Articles are included if eligible. The result was descriptive and narrative synthesized. A total of 513 articles were collected. Three studies of Randomized Control Trials met the inclusion criteria. Overall, nutrients contained in the avocado act as nutraceuticals. Especially monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) oleic can help improve endothelial dysfunction and ultimately reduce the risk of CVD. Available evidence suggests role MUFA contained avocado has the potential as a nutraceutical of dietary therapy to improve endothelial dysfunction associated with reducing obesity-induced CVD risk.

Abstract

Abstract

Background: Obesity is a severe global public health problem linked to chronic noncommunicable disease and increased mortality. It has harmful effects on metabolic disorders via the insulin resistance pathway. Available guidelines recommend caloric reduction via intermittent fasting for obesity management. However, the available literature is less focused on the benefits of intermittent fasting on improved insulin resistance in healthy obese adults, especially related to an accumulation of free fatty acids. Therefore, a scoping review is necessary. Objective: This review aims to collect evidence on the benefits of intermittent fasting on improved insulin resistance in healthy obese adults. Methods: This scoping review followed the 5-step Arksey and O'Malley framework and was submitted following PRISMA ScR. Five electronic databases were thoroughly searched. Papers are included if they are eligible. The result was a synthesis of descriptive and narrative elements. Results: 1117 papers were collected in total. Nine randomized controlled trial studies met the review's inclusion criteria. The papers included are sourced from reputable, relevant sources. As a whole, intermittent fasting appears to benefit improved insulin resistance in healthy obese adults. Intermittent fasting has been shown to reduce insulin levels while increasing insulin sensitivity, therefore improving insulin resistance. Conclusion: Evidence suggests that intermittent fasting can help improve insulin resistance in healthy obese adults.

Abstract

The trend of unhealthy eating and the careless consumption of snacks among elementary school children remains a major nutritional issue in various countries worldwide, including Indonesia. Children tend to choose food based on their preferences. The shift in trends toward consuming snacks carelessly negatively affects children's nutritional status and health. This activity aimed to increase students’ knowledge and awareness about the importance of choosing healthy snacks and avoiding careless snacking habits. Nutrition education on snacking carelessly was the main emphasis of the community service programs. Thirty-sixth-grade students from SDN Bandar Lor II participated in the activity. PowerPoint and leaflets were used to communicate the content. The education session lasted for one hour. Pre- and post-tests were used to evaluate the results. The results of the activity showed that the participants engaged in the event in a participatory and active manner. The nutrition education on snacking carelessly effectively increased the students' knowledge by 4.6 points. Interactive methods, the use of infographic media, and hands-on practice enhanced participation and motivation in the children's learning process. Nutrition education on snacking carelessly effectively increased the students' knowledge.

Abstract

University students are a population vulnerable to dietary pattern shifts and reduced physical activity due to academic demands and lifestyle changes. These factors may contribute to both undernutrition and overnutrition. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the association between dietary habits, physical activity, and nutritional status among undergraduate students at Universitas Sebelas Maret. A cross-sectional observational study was conducted involving 150 students selected via simple random sampling from five faculties. Validated questionnaires assessed snacking frequency, late-night eating habits, and physical activity. Nutritional status was determined using Body Mass Index (BMI). Data were analyzed using Chi-square tests. Significant associations were found between nutritional status and snacking frequency (p = 0.000), late-night eating (p = 0.046), and physical activity frequency (p = 0.028). Students who frequently snacked, consumed meals late at night, and engaged in low physical activity tended to exhibit overweight or obesity.Unhealthy dietary behaviors and insufficient physical activity are significantly associated with increased nutritional status among university students. Targeted health promotion and preventive interventions are essential to foster healthier lifestyles in this population.
