Abstract

The increasing influence of globalization and modernization has intensified language shift, placing many regional and minority languages at risk of reduced use and weakened intergenerational transmission. In multilingual contexts such as Indonesia, maintaining local languages has become increasingly important for preserving cultural identity and linguistic diversity. This study aims to explore the sociolinguistic factors and language maintenance strategies supporting Madurese language maintenance at Pondok Pesantren Al-Hikam Burneh, Bangkalan. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 12 participants, consisting of 10 santri (students), 1 ustadz (Islamic teachers), and 1 Head of Student Board selected through purposive sampling. The findings reveal that key sociolinguistic factors identified by Fishman (1991) namely family, education, religion, community, and language attitudes strengthen the use and transmission of the Madurese language. Language maintenance strategies based on Holmes (2013) include intergenerational transmission, institutional support through programs such as Perbahasaan (a structured Madurese language practice activity), community involvement through cultural performances such as Sandur (traditional ritual dance-theater) and Manten (traditional wedding and ceremonial practices), and government support through the local content curriculum. Media and technology play a relatively limited role, as official communication platforms and written announcements within the Pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) predominantly employ Indonesian to ensure broader accessibility for students and parents from diverse linguistic backgrounds. The findings indicate that Pesantren creates a dynamic multilingual environment in which Madurese remains actively used in daily, educational, and cultural domains, highlighting its significant role in sustaining regional language and cultural identity amid modernizing pressures.

Abstract

This study investigates how male and female santri at Pesantren Al Hikam Burneh differ in their communication styles, guided by Deborah Tannen’s (1991) theory of rapport talk and report talk. The research seeks to answer how gender influences language use in both private and public interactions within the pesantren environment. Using a qualitative descriptive method, data were collected through interviews with several male and female santri who actively engage in daily communication. The findings show that female santri tend to express empathy, support, and emotional openness, which align with rapport talk, while male santri often focus on clarity and giving solutions, reflecting report talk. However, the results also reveal differences from Tannen’s assumptions; female santri appear more confident in public speaking, and male santri show politeness and restraint influenced by pesantren values. These variations suggest that gendered communication among santri is shaped not only by gender roles but also by religious and cultural norms that promote respect, balance, and harmony.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the patterns of Indonesian and Madurese language use, identify the factors influencing language choice, and analyze the role of both languages in enhancing the effectiveness of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and social interaction among the community in Tanah Merah District, Bangkalan. The research employed a qualitative descriptive method with an ethnographic case study design and discourse analysis. Data were collected through direct observation at Tanah Merah Market, in-depth interviews with MSME actors, and documentation in the form of photographs and interview recordings. The findings reveal that Madurese dominates daily communication because it fosters closeness and trust with local customers, while Indonesian functions as a lingua franca when interacting with buyers from outside Madura. Code-switching between the two languages proved to be an adaptive communication strategy primarily motivated by the need for social capital maintenance rather than market expansion alone. The implications of this study confirm that bilingual competence constitutes both an economically and socially valuable communicative asset for MSME actors in multiethnic regions, warranting greater attention in MSME development programs by relevant stakeholders.
