Abstract

The objective of the research is to find out whether or not translating of Indonesian short story into English is able to improve students’ vocabulary.The writer employed experimental method, which applied one group pre-test, treatment, and post-test design. The sample consists of 20 students taken from the second year students of SMAN 1 Watampone. The writer collected data by using translating of Indonesian short story into English.The result of the data shows that there are significant difference between pre-test and post-test. The value of post-test (76.25) is greater than in the pre-test (38.04) which the standard deviation of pre-test is (15.32) and in the post-test is (11.44) which mean that the hypothesis is accepted. Based upon the findings and discussion, the researcher concludes that the translation of Indonesian short story into English is effective to increase the students’ vocabulary.

Abstract

The research aims to elaborate the apology strategies employed by Buginese speaker and explore the structure of apology based on social relation between interlocutors. The result reveals that Buginese speaker use various strategy of apology in apologizing but the most dominant apology strategy do Buginese speakers employ in apologizing is acknowledgment responsibility with four substrategies expressing lack of intent, expressing self deficiency, accepting blame, expressing of embarrassment. Moreover, the complaint, showing the effort, showing desire, and brushing off the incident as unimportant is exist in the data as modification of apology strategy from six scholars and others prior researcher. Therefore, it can conclude that Buginese people employ indirect apology such as acknowledgment of responsibility, explanation, an offer of repair, interjection, address term in their apology eventhough it combines with direct apology whether in the beginning, middle or in the end of utterances or response to show her/his polite behavior to others.

Abstract

The maintenance of a local language is a symbol of the survival of the concept of traditional cultural values. The loss or extinction of local languages, including Buginese, will also disappear and extinct the concept of traditional cultural values because traditional culture can only be understood properly through the expression of the local language of the people. In other words, if local languages become extinct, the image and identity of the people will become unclear. By raising the case for the maintenance of the Buginese in Bulukumba Regency, this Community Service aims to (1) describe the patterns of Buginese maintenance in the family domain in Bulukumba Regency and (2) analyze the factors that support the preservation of the Buginese in Bulukumba Regency, South Sulawesi Province. The method used is an approach through educating the local people to keep using the Buginese in the family realm. The results of the activity show that the Bugis people still maintain their language in the realm of a good family. Factors that support the maintenance of the Buginese in Bontomacinna Village are loyalty, awareness of the norm, language pride, age, and occupation.

Abstract

Communication becomes an essential aspect in language classroom because it bridges the meaning of a person’s ideas. Therefore, as foreign language learners, the students have to have a good understanding at how to interact effectively with other students. Regarding to this, the researcher considered it is crucial to investigate English Foreign Language (EFL) university students’ ways in communication during their speaking class which includes hedges. The objectives of the research was to find out the types of hedges employed by EFL university students during their speaking class within the academic setting. This study was conducted at Politeknik LP3I Makassar and it was focused on the students in the first semesters in subject Basic Speaking with the total participants were 23 students of one class. The method used was descriptive qualitative method. There were 3 recordings based on the students’ interactions in the classroom. The theory from Riekkinen and Svarova (2009) was used to analyze the data gain. After transcribing and analyzing the data, the results showed that the students in EFL speaking class utilized some types of hedges. The hedges used involves personal evaluation, expression of limitation, expression of hesitation, and the combine hedges. Besides, the students employ hedges for some reasons.

Abstract

This is motivated by the importance of taxes for state revenues and increasing regional finances. To achieve this goal, the government carries out the effectiveness of tax collection to increase regional income. By implementing the effectiveness of tax collection, the government expects tax revenue to be more optimal and reach the targets that have been set previously. The purpose of this study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of land and building tax collection at the Makassar City Regional Revenue Service in supporting Makassar City's PAD and to find out the inhibiting factors and supporters of PBB collection at the Makassar City Revenue Service. To achieve the objectives of this study, the type of research used is descriptive qualitative, namely to provide a clear picture of the problems studied, interpret and explain data systematically at the Makassar City Revenue Service with a qualitative research approach, namely conducting interviews with respondents who contain questions regarding matters related to research. The results of the study show that the effectiveness of land and building tax collection at the Regional Revenue Service of Makassar City is good or effective. However, the effectiveness of the collection can be increased so that the goals of the organization, namely increasing tax revenue, can be fulfilled. Meanwhile, to measure the effectiveness of land and building tax collection, namely by looking at the level of taxpayer compliance as measured through the juridical aspect. consists of WP registration, SPT reporting, tax calculation and tax payment.

Abstract

Communication is important in language schools because it connects the meaning of a person's thoughts. As a result, as foreign language learners, students must grasp how to engage effectively with other students. In this regard, the researcher believed it was critical to explore English Foreign Language (EFL) university students' communication styles during their speaking class, which included hedges. The research aims were to discover the sorts of hedges used by EFL university students during their speaking class in an academic context, as well as the reasons why EFL university students used hedges during their speaking class. This study was conducted at Politeknik LP3I Makassar and it was focused on the students in the first semester in subject Basic Speaking with the total participants were 23 students of one class. The method used was descriptive qualitative method. There were 6 recordings in the interview sections the theory from Riekkinen and Svarova (2009) was used to analyze the data gained. After transcribing and analyzing the data, the results showed that the students employ hedges for some reasons. The first reason was to express a personal evaluation or a suggestion to put into practice for a current situation, the second reason was markers of vagueness that will enable students to express uncertainty, the third reason gained in interview section was to apply a need in a situational context such as request, seek permission, and giving advice, and the last reason was to apply politeness in requesting the attention of the hearer.

Abstract

The discursive interaction consists of dialogism and parallelism. This research is aimed to analyze the discursive interaction that occurs in Mappettu Ada event. The researcher employed descriptive qualitative method, shows a description and elaboration systematically what the interactions happened in Mappettu Ada event. The data were taken from text of Mappettu Ada who utterred by the representative of man and woman which was held in Mappettu Ada event.The result of the data shows that the Mappettu Ada is carried out through two representative of man and woman held the ceremonial custom meeting in order to discuss about tanra esso (the day of marriage), sompa (dowry), balanca (expenses/money for celebrating the marriage). Other result is the discursive interaction that occurs in Mappettu Ada event are dialogism and parallelism. The form of parallelism which occurs in Mappettu Ada event is interactional parallelism.Keywords: Mappettu Ada, interaction, parallelism. Interaksi diskursif meliputi dialogism dan parallelism. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisa interaksi diskursif yang muncul pada acara Mappettu Ada. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif yang menunjukkan penggambaran dan elaborasi secara sistematis tentang interaksi apa saja yang terdapat dalam acara Mappettu Ada. Data ini diperoleh dari ujaran dalam Mappettu Ada yang diujarkan oleh perwakilan laki-laki dan perempuan yang diselenggarakan dalam acara Mappettu Ada. Hasil dari data menunjukkan bahwa acara Mappettu Ada diselenggarakan dengan diadakannya pertemuan secara adat antara perwakilan pihak laki-laki dan perempuan dengan maksud untuk mendiskusikan tentang tanra esso (hari pernikahan), sompa (mahar), balanca (uang belanja). Hasil lain penelitian ini adalah adanya interaksi diskursif yang muncul dalam Mappettu Ada yaitu dialogisme dan parallelisme. Bentuk parallelism yang muncul dalam acara Mappettu Ada adalah parallelisme interaksi. Kata kunci: Mappettu Ada, interaksi, parallelism.

Abstract

This study investigates the efficacy of dynamic assignment strategies in enhancing English language proficiency, engagement, and motivation among learners compared to traditional assignment methods. Through a mixed-methods approach, involving quantitative analyses of language proficiency scores and engagement levels, as well as qualitative insights from student perspectives and teacher observations, the research highlights the significant advantages of integrating dynamic assignments in English language learning. Results indicate that students participating in the dynamic assignment group showed statistically significant improvements in overall language proficiency, particularly in speaking and writing skills (p < 0.05). Additionally, these students reported higher levels of cognitive, emotional, and behavioral engagement (p < 0.05), which were positively correlated with their language proficiency improvements (r = 0.62, p < 0.01). This suggests that the more engaged students are in their learning process, the better their language learning outcomes. From the qualitative data, students expressed a greater motivation and interest in learning English, attributing this to the real-world relevance and applicability of the dynamic assignments. Teachers corroborated these findings, noting enhanced active participation, collaboration, and improvements in students’ communication skills and confidence. However, both students and teachers identified challenges, including increased preparation time and the need for clearer guidelines to maximize the benefits of dynamic assignments. The study concludes that dynamic assignment strategies significantly contribute to improving language proficiency and engagement among English language learners. It suggests that addressing the identified challenges could further optimize the effectiveness of these strategies. This research advocates for a shift towards more interactive, relevant, and engaging teaching methodologies in language education to better prepare learners for real-world communication.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to develop innovative assessment methods in the context of modern Learning. In today's digital age, traditional approaches to learning assessment are often no longer sufficient to holistically assess student progress and success. Thus, this study proposes a more innovative and comprehensive assessment method that uses modern technology and considers students' individual needs. This study identified and tested promising new assessment tools and techniques through pilot projects, such as digital portfolios, peer assessment, and realistic simulations. In addition, this study also explores how technologies such as learning analytics can be used to provide more meaningful and timely feedback to students and teachers. The results of this study indicate that this innovative assessment method can improve student engagement, comprehension, and learning outcomes. These findings also suggest that teachers and educators can use technology and data to make more informed decisions about how to develop and implement assessment strategies. In conclusion, developing innovative assessment methods in modern learning environments is essential for more inclusive, adaptive, and practical education. By integrating technology and new assessment approaches, this research significantly contributes to our understanding of creating more effective and engaging assessment systems in this digital era.

Abstract

This activity aims to introduce young children to English by using storytelling in classroom learning. This activity was carried out at one of the kindergarten schools in Bangkalan, Madura, namely RA Bakti Telang. The target participants were students in group B. Theory and practical methods were combined in this activity to stimulate young children's curiosity in learning English. The results showed that the storytelling method could increase young children vocabularies. This is proven based on the results of the pre-test and post-test comparative evaluation. Storytelling could make young children understand new vocabularies in English easier.
