Abstract

Every utterance produced by a speaker has its own type and function. However, this research focuses on illocutionary speech acts. This research aims to describe the types and functions of illocutionary speech acts in the conversation between Elon Musk and the moderator at TED Talk 2022 and describe the function of these speech acts. This data is in the form of sentences and clauses in conversations between Elon Musk and Chris Anderson which contain illocutionary acts. The data source was collected through observation methods using transcribing and note-taking techniques by watching and listening to video to know the context. The data is analyzed qualitatively using the theory proposed by Searle to study various types of illocutionary acts, followed by the theory proposed by Leech regarding the functions of illocutionary acts. The data analysis method used in this study is constant comparative or often called the equivalent method. The problems in this research are (1) What speech acts are contained in the conversation between Elon Musk and the moderator and (2) What is the function of each utterance. The results show that there are 4 types of speech acts in the conversation between Elon Musk and the moderator, namely (1) Assertive, (2) Directive, (3) Commissive, and (4) Expressive. Based on the function of illocutionary speech, two functions are obtained, namely (1) Collaborative function and (2) Convival function. The researcher suggests that further research needs to be carried out to understand illocutionary acts in conversation to be able to provide information and it is also necessary to pay attention to the context and situation to understand the meaning.

Abstract

The objective of the research is to investigate whether or not there is a significant difference in the mastery of the speaking skill between the students who are taught by using classroom discussion and those who are taught without using classroom discussion. This study is a quasi-experimental study employing two groups. The experimental group is 8A and the control group is 8C. The data were collected by using an achievement test. The data of both pre-test and post-test scores from the control and experimental groups were analyzed by using inferential statistics. To test the hypothesis, the researcher used t-test to find out the differences of speaking skill mastery achievement between control and experimental groups. The result of post-test indicates that t o is higher than the t value at the significance level of 5%, i.e. 2.106<2.000. The level significance is 0.037. It is lower than 0.05. It was found that the mean of the post-test scores and gained scores of the experimental group were higher than that of the control group. The standard deviation of the experimental group decreases from 7.30 to 6.92 or the scores of the experimental group from pre-test to post-test are more homogenous. While, the standard deviation of the control group increases from 7.53 to 8.36 or the scores of the control group from pre-test to post-test are more heterogeneous. Besides, the mean of experimental group increases 207% from the standard deviation of the pre-test. While the mean of the control group also increases 147% from the standard deviation of the pre-test. It is found that classroom discussion is effective in improving English learning achievement in student’s mastery of speaking and there is a significant difference in between the both class.

Abstract

AbstractIn running daily activities, people will always meet and interact with other people, and language is a medium that is used by humans to interact with each other. In a conversation or discussion, everyone should pay attention to the four maxims in order that there are no errors in communication. However, it is not uncommon that the four rules above are breached by the speakers. This is called non-observance of the maxims, and one of a non-observance of the maxims that often occurs in is flouting maxim. The aims of this paper are to describe types of maxims that are flouted by Sherlock Holmes and dr. Watson as well as to describe how the maxims are flouted in Sherlock TV series season 1. This research used qualitative descriptive method. The researcher classifies the utterances to know what kind of maxim which are flouted, categorizes those into the category based on the Grice’s theory of Cooperative Principle, namely: maxim of quantity, quality, relation and manner. The research procedure begin by searching the script in the internet, matching the utterances in the script and in film and sorting the utterances between Sherlock Holmes and dr. Watson as well observing every word or sentence which are flouted by the main characters. The findings find that all kinds of maxims are flouted by Sherlock and dr. Watson. The result of analysis shows that the maxim flouted when the speakers say something irrelevant; something roguishness or lied to hide the truth in the form of rhetorical question; the information becomes more or too informative than what is required; and something obscurity of expression, ambiguity, or unnecessary prolixity.

Abstract

Political speeches influence the formation of public opinion, the construction of ideological narratives, and the direction of international diplomacy. This study aims to identify and analyze the illocutionary acts in U.S. President Joe Biden’s Oval Office address on the Israel–Hamas conflict and to examine how language is used to articulate political stance and strategic diplomatic positioning. Using Searle’s typology of assertive, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative acts, this research employs a descriptive qualitative method based on the official transcript published by The New York Times and the corresponding video released by Sky News. The findings show that assertive acts dominate the speech, functioning to reinforce factual claims, establish credibility, and clarify the United States’ foreign policy orientation. Commissive and expressive acts appear frequently to project moral commitment, empathy, and alignment with selected stakeholders, while directive and declarative acts are used sparingly to encourage support without demanding immediate action. These results indicate that Biden’s speech employs speech acts strategically to balance assertive leadership with humanitarian rhetoric in a high-stakes diplomatic context. The study contributes to pragmatic research on political discourse by demonstrating how speech acts operate as strategic tools for managing international crises. Future research may extend this analysis by examining audience reception and the perlocutionary effects of such political communication.
