Abstract

Background: Sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) are beverages to which sugar is added. SSBs are low in nutritional value, and have been associated with various health risks, such as increased incidence of obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, and dental caries. Labeling on SSBs was one of potential strategies used to reduce the purchase and intake of SSB. Objective: This review aims to summarize findings from previous studies on the effect of labeling on SSBs in relation to purchasing of SSBs among adults. Methods: A literature search was conducted through Google Scholar and PubMed using these keywords (“nutrition label” OR “warning label” OR “food label” OR “health label”) AND (“sugar sweetened beverage” OR “SSB” OR “sugary drink”) AND (“behavior” OR “purchase”) AND (“adult”). Articles published in the range of 10 years (2015-2025) were included. Results: The search found 10 articles that met the inclusion and exclusion criterias. The labels used in the studies were primarily text health warning labels and graphic health warning labels. Most studies reported that labels used in SSB products reduced consumers’ intention to choose SSBs. Conclusion: SSB labeling, whether in text or image form, has the potential to reduce consumers’ purchasing intentions of sugar-sweetened beverages.

Abstract

This educational activity aims to increase mothers' knowledge about nutritious and healthy food by optimizing interpersonal communication in Puskesmas Dadok Tunggul Hitam, Padang City. The activity design is a pre-post intervention without a control group, implemented in late August and early September 2025, targeting 15 mothers. The educational activity, supported by leaflets, includes initial activities in the form of a pre-test, individual education and counseling, discussions, and ends with a post-test. The partner for this activity is Puskesmas Dadok Tunggul Hitam, which plays a role in providing licensing support and data provision. The characteristics of mothers of toddlers are that more than 50% of mothers are aged 30-39 years, have a high school education, and are housewives. The results of the education show an increase in mothers' knowledge after being given individual counseling. The average pre-test score of mothers of toddlers was 7.4 ± 1.183 and increased to 9.4 ± 0.737 in the post-test, with a p-value of 0.0001 (p < 0.05). This indicates that nutrition education through interpersonal communication, which has not been widely used in educational activities, and assisted by leaflets, is effective in increasing mothers' knowledge about nutritious and healthy foods. This increase in knowledge is expected to be implemented in family food consumption behaviors towards a more balanced and healthy nutrition in everyday life, thereby contributing to improving the nutritional status and health of the community.

Abstract

Background: Stunting and anemia frequently co-occur in children under five, exacerbating undernutrition burdens in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This narrative review synthesizes evidence on the prevalence and shared risk factors of concurrent stunting and anemia in children under five. Methods: We searched three electronic databases: PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar and included studies published from January 2010 to December 2025. Search terms combined keywords related to “stunting”, “anemia”, “coexistence”, and “children under five”. Results: The coexistence of stunting and anemia affects approximately one in five children under five in LMICs with individual country estimates varied widely at 5.6–60.1%. Shared determinants included child age, small birth size, recurrent infections, inadequate dietary diversity and intake of animal‑source foods and legumes, maternal anemia, short stature, low maternal education, household poverty, open defecation, and limited access to quality health and water, sanitation and hygiene services. Conclusion: Evidence supports integrated, multi‑sectoral strategies that target maternal nutrition, infant and young child feeding, infection control, and environmental sanitation to reduce the coexistence of stunting and anemia in early childhood.

Abstract

Adolescent reproductive health is essential for preventing risky sexual behaviors, particularly among female students who are at a vulnerable stage of psychosocial development. Preliminary observations at SMP Negeri 23 Padang revealed that reproductive health education had not been optimally implemented, as evidenced by limited educational resources, inactive student development forums, and insufficient reproductive health knowledge among female students. These conditions may increase adolescents' vulnerability to risky sexual behaviors. This community engagement program aimed to improve students’ reproductive health knowledge through the REPROFUN (*Reproductive Health Fun Class*) educational intervention. The program involved 83 female students from Grades VII to IX and employed a one-group pretest–posttest design. The intervention consisted of a pretest, interactive health education sessions, educational video presentations, behavior-based learning games, and a posttest to evaluate changes in participants’ knowledge. The results demonstrated a significant improvement in reproductive health knowledge, with the mean score increasing from 71.56 before the intervention to 94.93 after the intervention. The standard deviation decreased from 13.92 to 6.12, indicating a more consistent level of understanding among participants. In addition, advocacy activities successfully reactivated the Annisa Forum as a sustainable platform for reproductive health education and student development. Overall, the REPROFUN program proved effective in enhancing reproductive health knowledge through interactive visual-based education. This program offers a practical and sustainable model for school-based health promotion and the prevention of risky sexual behaviors among adolescents.

Abstract

Adolescents represent a population highly vulnerable to psychological and nutritional challenges. Global reports indicated that more adolescents experience mental health problems and national surveys showing rising concerns related to stress, body image, and unhealthy dietary habits. Academic pressure, peer dynamics, and widespread exposure to idealized body standards on social media further contribute to negative body image, increased stress levels, and poor eating behaviors. This community service program aimed to enhance students’ knowledge and awareness regarding body image, stress, and nutritional status through a structured school-based educational intervention. The activity was conducted at SMPN 14 Pauh, Padang City, involving 53 students. A pre–post intervention design was implemented, utilizing interactive presentations, participatory discussions, and brief ice-breaking activities, followed by pre-test and post-test assessments to measure changes in knowledge. A satisfaction survey was also administered to evaluate students’ perceptions of the session. The results demonstrated a significant increase in students’ knowledge scores after the educational session (p<0.001), with the highest improvement in questions related to body image and nutritional status. More than 90% of students expressed satisfaction with the materials, delivery methods, and the program’s relevance to their daily lives. These findings indicate that a short, targeted school-based intervention can effectively improve adolescents’ literacy in nutrition and mental well-being. Strengthening continuous programs through school health units and curricular integration is recommended to ensure sustained benefits and long-term impact on adolescent health.

Abstract

Background: Breastfeeding provides babies with the best nutrients possible and is essential for promoting their development. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the connection between the expression of the fatty acid desaturase (FAD) and FUT genes in breast milk cells and the nutritional status, dietary consumption, and growth of the newborn. Methods: In Jombang, East Java, Indonesia, 52 pairs of nursing women and their babies participated in a cross-sectional study. Breast milk samples were collected for mRNA expression analysis using RT-qPCR, while dietary, sociodemographic, anthropometric, and child growth data were assessed using standardized protocols. Results: The majority of mothers had inadequate energy (78.8%) and protein (42.3%) intake, while 76.9% met adequate iron intake. Higher maternal energy (69.5% vs. 59.5%, p<0.001), protein (95.5% vs. 80.3%, p=0.033), and iron intake (136% vs. 105%, p=0.023) were significantly associated with increased FUT1 gene expression. Additionally, higher FAD2 gene expression was linked to increased maternal energy intake (p=0.045) and older maternal age (p=0.004). Interestingly, FUT3 gene expression was elevated in mothers of lower-birth-weight infants (3003 ± 551 g vs. 3302 ± 411 g, p=0.031). Conclusions: These findings emphasize the influence of maternal nutrition on functional gene expression in breastmilk, with potential implications for infant health and development.
