Abstract

Learning materials have essential roles in building learning environment—whether it becomes learner-centered, knowledge-centered, or assessment-centered. This study sought the trend of learning material development in basic speaking class. This study was qualitative in nature where the data quality was the key point measurement for further steps in finding the answer(s) to the research question. The data source was materials used for 14 meetings of Basic Conversation class. While the subject of this study was these materials, the object was the material criteria categorized based on Bransford’s et al. (2001) representation about learning material development in a classroom. The data analysis employed interactive analysis undergoing three steps which were data reduction, data display, and data verification. The results show that learner-centeredness was majorly developed in Meeting 2, Meeting 4, Meeting 5, Meeting 8, Meeting 9, and Meeting 10; knowledge-centeredness was majorly developed in Meeting 3, Meeting 6, and Meeting 7; and assessment-centeredness was majorly developed in Meeting 6 and Meeting 7. It is concluded that, first, the learning materials used for Basic Conversation class generally developed learner-centered environment as the focus was students’ interest and their background knowledge. Secondly, the materials also accentuated on knowledge-centeredness, though not as much as the first result. Last, there was also slight but still substantial development of assessment-centered environment. It implies that there can be found ample balance between these three types of learning centeredness to promote good learning environment.

Abstract

Parents’ language beliefs and attitudes play a significant role in shaping language practices at home. This descriptive qualitative study focuses on the families’ perspectives on multilingualism and their views on the necessity of learning the Indonesian language in order to find out parents’ beliefs and attitudes toward the Indonesian language. In collecting the data, this study used semi-structured interviews with 11 Indonesian-Australian families in Melbourne. The collected data were subsequently analyzed by using NVivo software. The findings indicate that all parents support multilingualism, recognizing its cognitive benefits, economic advantages, and the influence of their own multilingual experiences. However, variations exist regarding the inclusion of the Indonesian language in their children's multilingual repertoire. While eight families emphasized the importance of learning Indonesian to maintain family bonds and cultural heritage, three families perceived it as unnecessary due to their children’s primary identity as Australian citizens, infrequent visits to Indonesia, and the limited global utility of the language. These findings suggest that while multilingualism is believed to be widely valued, parental attitudes toward specific languages are influenced by their personal experiences, perceived utility, and cultural connections. Further research into how these beliefs translate into actual language practices at home would provide deeper insights into family language management.

Abstract

This study aimed at reporting differences in terms of the university students’ TOEFL self-efficacy in the test skill and the English skills tested in TOEFL namely listening, structure, and reading. In conducting the study, the explanatory sequential mixed method was used as the study design, where the quantitative data from the survey was conducted first followed by the follow-up interview as the qualitative data. To collect the data in this study, a specifically designed self-efficacy questionnaire of TOEFL was distributed to the total sample of 200 university students across different disciplines from Syiah Kuala University and the University of Serambi Mekkah. The interview was then conducted with 3 selected students to have a deeper understanding of the study result. In terms of the data analysis, one-way ANOVA and t-test were used to describe the quantitative data, while the qualitative data was described and elaborated in words with detailed explanations. The result showed that there was a significant difference among the test skill and the English skills in TOEFL, where F= 13.61 (3, 796), p<0.05. The result also revealed that within the gender, only reading skill had a significant difference, where t198= -2.003, p <. 005, and within the language course participation, all the test skills and TOEFL skills were significantly different as the p-value of each skill was smaller than .005 (p< .005).
