Abstract

Documenting institutional archives in an art institution is rarely the main discussion. So far, institutional archives have only been assessed in terms of an administrative nature, but in fact, this documentation can be a way to build institutional memories. This paper is an overview of a workshop on institutional archiving in an art organization held at the Asia Art Archive, Hong Kong from 23 to 25 May 2019. The workshop was attended by various art organizations in the Asian region. Furthermore, this paper will use an analytical-qualitative approach to describe archives and institutional archives, management, success parameters, and preservation problems faced, especially for the Asian region which is very unfavorable climatically for several archive mediums. In closing, this paper will link with one of the archiving projects carried out in The Aesthetics & The Sciences of Art Research Group (ASARG), Faculty of Art and Design, ITB called CIVAS (Center for Indonesian Visual Art Studies). keywords: institutional archiving, institutional memory, art organizations, Indonesian visual art

Abstract

This study examined the use of the term ‘Pan-Sensualism’ in the discourse on contemporary Indonesian new art and how this manifested itself in artworks created at the beginning of the Indonesian New Order era (1966-1998). Jim Supangkat was one of the artists and initiators in forming the artist group Gerakan Seni Rupa Baru Indonesia (Indonesian New Art Movement), which then organized the first Seni Rupa Baru 75 exhibition in 1975. Jim Supangkat presented six installation works with different narratives, but Ken Dedes was the only one that presented the dialectic of traditional and modern culture. The Prajnaparamita, or Ken Dedes statue is presented with a drawing of the body of a woman wearing jeans with the buttons open. In looking at the formal, social-historical, cultural, feministic, and other elements in the work of Ken Dedes (1975-1996), we used the iconographic research method. This method helps to see several aspects of Supangkat’s visual works related to the aesthetic paradigm of Pan-Sensualism and the intersection of two cultural elements, i.e., high and low art, which may be distinguished based on social class appreciation.

Abstract

Archives in fine arts are the subject of study, namely how archives are presented in galleries or public spaces. This article examines the curatorial ideas at the Mengingat-Ingat Sanento Yuliman (1941-1992)’s exhibition held in 2019 at the Cipta II Gallery, Taman Ismail Marzuki, using a historical method approach and through an archive analysis method supported by archival theory according to Terry Cook's view. During his life, Sanento Yuliman was an Indonesian art critic where at the Mengingat-Ingat Sanento Yuliman (1941-1992)’s archive exhibition. The exhibition curator exhibited Sanento Yuliman's archives in the form of sketches, illustrations, caricatures, paintings, and objects collected personally. Through this exhibition study, the collection of archives as the subject of the exhibition presented in the Mengingat-Ingat Sanento Yuliman (1941-1992)’s exhibition provides findings that Yuliman's work is no longer just scientific work in written form. Still, various other forms of work, such as visual and illustrative works, are found in caricatures and paintings. This archival exhibition study sees the impression of Yuliman's deep appreciation of fine art so that his critical work is not just an idea that the art field can accept but a deep appreciation that comes from the ability to work, thoughts, and results of reflection that can be seen from the objects exhibited in Mengingat-Ingat Sanento Yuliman (1941-1992)’s as an archive.

Abstract

This research examines the Archival Exhibition: 1st Annual Jeprut Permanen 2014, which showcases documentation and artefacts from the performance art of the Jeprut group in Bandung. This exhibition is interesting to analyze due to its unconventional presentation of archives, resembling contemporary art installations. Though detailed descriptions of the exhibition and analysis based on archival theory, this research aims to examine the status and display format of archives in the exhibition. The method used is descriptive qualitative of archive study. The results show that although the presentation resembles installation work, the exhibited objects still meet the criteria of archives as records of performance events. This exhibition expands the understanding of the form and presentation of archives in contemporary art, demonstrating that archives can function not only as historical documents but also as artistic mediums. The archival exhibition approach successfully makes archive the main object while presenting them in a visually appealing form, showing the potential of archives in the context of art galleries. Keywords: archival exhibition, performance art, artefacts

Abstract

“Mouthwashing” is a game that has achieved many prestigious awards and nominations just within a few months after its’ release on 24th September 2024. This horror game was conceptualized and written by Johanna Kasurinen which then got developed to a game by Wrong Organ Studio. While it’s nothing new, it’s still rare to find a female game creator and even rarer is when a game made by women has achieved as many awards as “Mouthwashing” had. This research is a critical reading of the female role in the game “Mouthwashing” and how a female’s view is applied in her works. This is qualitative research with the data taken from a game playthrough video and interview articles with Kasurinen. The main theory used for this research is the female gaze theory by Laura Mulvey. In the game, there’s only one female character named Anya whose role is quite significant both in gameplay function and the overall theme. Kasurinen herself had stated in interviews that she often looks back upon herself while writing characters that aren’t only not good, but also human. In conclusion, despite the strong female gaze aspect, the narration of the overall game doesn’t fit into the feminist category.
