Abstract

Flipped learning to date has generally been implemented within a blended classroom. However, the growing number of fully online courses and the existence of Covid-19 have shown the need to try using flipped learning in a fully online class. This paper aimed to explore student achievement and perception in an online flipped grammar class. A paired-sample t-test showed a significant difference between student pre-test and post-test scores with a medium effect size after attending the online flipped course for one month. The interview and questionnaire data revealed students’ overall positive perception toward the introduction of flipped learning within the course. Students mentioned that the flipped approach made the course more interactive and provided them opportunities to ask questions to the teacher with an immediate answer. They also expressed their positive attitude towards the use of different learning platforms (e.g., LMS, Zoom) and modes (synchronous and asynchronous) that could ease their learning experience within the course. Nevertheless, students recommended that the virtual meeting via Zoom needs to be limited in time duration.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the influence of the Mind Mapping Technique on students’ writing skills at MA Guppi Samata. Since writing in English seems to be one of the most difficult tasks to do. The researcher intended to help the students write a descriptive text by applying the mind mapping technique. The researcher performed the quasi experimental research method to find the influence of the technique. The population of this research was 49 first-grade students at MA Guppi Samata. The subjects of this study were 25 students from the experimental class and 24 students from the control class. The researcher did the treatment by teaching descriptive text and applying the mind mapping technique. The data were collected through the test. The result of the data was analyzed quantitatively. By comparing the value of the t-test and t-table to analyze the hypothesis, the researcher defined the result of the research. The researcher found that there was a significant difference between students’ scores in the post-test for the experimental class and the controlled class. The mean score of post-tests (7.44) in the experimental class was greater than the mean score of post-tests (6.54) in the controlled class. Furthermore, the comparison of the t-test (3.333) and the t-table (2.021) indicated that the t-test was higher than the t-table at the level of significance (α) = 0.05 with a degree of freedom (df) = (N1 + N2)-2 = (25 + 24) – 2 = 47. Based on the t-test and t-table comparison results, it was shown that the mind-mapping technique influenced the students’ writing skills. It has been proved that mind mapping is one of the techniques that helps students find and organize ideas for writing, especially descriptive text. Students are facilitated by the diagram in mind mapping that represents the way of organizing ideas linked to the central keyword with branches containing related words.

Abstract

Learning Indonesian in higher education, especially at IAIN Palopo, faces significant challenges due to the lack of appropriate and effective teaching materials, so it is necessary to develop teaching materials based on higher-order thinking Skills (HOTS) to improve the quality of learning and students' language skills. This study aims to develop and evaluate Indonesian language teaching materials based on higher-order thinking Skills (HOTS) to improve the quality of learning and language skills of students at the Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, IAIN Palopo. This study uses the Research and Development (R&D) method with the Borg and Gall design to develop Indonesian language teaching materials based on higher-order thinking Skills (HOTS) at the Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, IAIN Palopo. The research process involves the development, validation by experts, and revision of teaching materials, with data collected through validation sheets and analyzed using the Aiken index to measure validity. This research has successfully developed Indonesian language teaching materials entitled "Indonesian Language for Higher Education: Learning Based on Higher Order Thinking Skills" integrated with HOTS. This book includes ten interrelated chapters covering the history and development of Indonesian as well as reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Three experts have validated This book through two stages and have successfully met the validity criteria regarding material, presentation, graphics, and language. The developed teaching materials show the potential to improve Indonesian language learning in higher education with the HOTS approach. This study provides a basis for further research on implementing these teaching materials in higher education environments.
