Abstract

Mobile gaming, as a rapidly expanding industry, has introduced unique linguistic elements into daily communication, particularly among university students. While these terms may support EFL learners in improving their language skills, research in this area remains limited. This study aims to explore the newly emerging terms in Mobile Legends and their potential impact on EFL university students’ vocabulary growth and reading comprehension. A total of 35 students participated in gameplay-based learning sessions, and data were gathered using vocabulary tests, comprehension tasks, and reflective journals through a mixed-method approach. The findings suggest that consistent exposure to gaming terms from Mobile Legends significantly broadens students’ vocabulary and enhances their understanding of reading materials. Additionally, students reported higher motivation and engagement when learning English through gaming. The study concludes that incorporating gaming language as supplementary material in the EFL classroom can play a valuable role in supporting vocabulary acquisition and improving comprehension outcomes.

Abstract

This study investigates the integration of a gamified Word Wall in vocabulary instruction and examines students’ perceptions and engagement with this Word Wall. Conducted with ten students from the English Education Study Program at Universitas PGRI Delta Sidoarjo, the research employed a descriptive qualitative design. Data were gathered through observations, interviews, and field notes. The findings suggest that incorporating gamification elements such as points, challenges, and collaborative tasks enhanced students’ motivation, vocabulary retention, and active participation. Students engaged actively in group and individual activities, communicated effectively, and responded positively to learning challenges. Despite these benefits, the study identified challenges including limited instructional time and varying levels of student motivation. Some participants found the activities demanding, especially when balancing academic workloads. Overall, the use of the gamified Word Wall contributed to a positive, interactive, and student-centered learning environment. The study highlights the importance of considering learners’ individual differences and educational contexts to ensure the sustainability of gamified strategies. These insights offer practical implications for enhancing vocabulary learning through engaging, participatory methods.

Abstract

This study explores the use of deixis in Olivia Rodrigo's song "Happier." It examines how deixis constructs emotional meaning and narrative coherence through linguistic elements. The focus is on identifying and analyzing five types of deixis: person, temporal, spatial, social, and discourse. This analysis interprets how language operates pragmatically within the song. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the research applies Levinson's framework for a detailed textual analysis. The song was selected purposively due to its emotional depth and linguistic richness. The findings reveal that person deixis is the most dominant type. It reflects the narrator's shifting emotional position toward her ex-partner and his new relationship. Temporal deixis marks the emotional timeline of the breakup. Meanwhile, spatial deixis subtly conveys psychological distance. Social deixis uncovers power dynamics and feelings of inferiority. Discourse deixis helps maintain the coherence of the emotional narrative. Each type of deixis contributes to building a layered and affective discourse that enhances the song's emotional resonance. The study concludes that deixis functions not only as a grammatical tool but also as an expressive and narrative device in popular music. The song "Happier" exemplifies how deixis can encode emotional complexity. This makes it a useful medium for both linguistic analysis and language learning. The research recommends further studies on deixis in multiple songs to gain broader insights into its stylistic and pragmatic functions.

Abstract

This study identifies and analyzes the types of figurative language in Leony Jardine's poetry collection The Moon and Her Secrets, interpreting their contextual meanings through a pragmatic perspective. Employing a qualitative descriptive method and Keraf’s classification, the research reveals that metaphor is the most frequently used device, followed by simile, with limited occurrences of personification, allusion, eponym, epithet, hypallage, irony, satire, and innuendo. These figurative expressions serve not only as stylistic devices but also convey emotional, symbolic, and interpersonal meanings shaped by context and speaker intention. Through close reading and contextual analysis, this study demonstrates how figurative language acts as a pragmatic strategy in poetic communication, enhancing the reader’s emotional engagement and understanding of the text. The findings indicate that poetic language fulfills both aesthetic and communicative purposes in expressing complex human experiences.

Abstract

Low levels of active participation and learning motivation remain persistent challenges in English language classrooms that rely heavily on lecture-based instruction and textbook-centered practices. Such conventional approaches often create a monotonous learning environment, particularly in reading activities that require sustained attention and cognitive engagement. These conditions call for more interactive and learner-centered strategies that align with students’ digital learning preferences. One potential alternative is Kahoot!, a game-based quiz platform designed to promote competition, enjoyment, and immediate feedback. This article examines the implementation of Kahoot-based learning as an innovative strategy to enhance students’ reading exercises. Reading is a fundamental language skill; however, learners frequently encounter difficulties due to limited motivation and minimal engagement in traditional instructional settings. By integrating Kahoot into reading activities, classroom interaction becomes more dynamic, participatory, and student-centered. The study aims to investigate how Kahoot-based learning supports reading comprehension, vocabulary development, and learning motivation. The research method involves administering reading exercises through Kahoot quizzes and observing students’ responses and performance during the instructional process. The findings indicate that Kahoot-based learning increases active participation, strengthens motivation, and improves comprehension through instant feedback and competitive elements. Moreover, it fosters a positive classroom climate and encourages collaborative learning. Therefore, Kahoot-based learning represents an effective alternative strategy for improving students’ reading skills.

Abstract

Deixis is an important pragmatic feature in song lyrics because it enables listeners to interpret meaning based on context, perspective, and interpersonal relations between the songwriter and the audience. In linguistic and pragmatic studies, deixis plays a crucial role in constructing narrative voice, emotional expression, and contextual interpretation. Although previous studies have analyzed deixis in various song lyrics, limited attention has been given to how different types of deixis contribute to the expression of internal conflict, identity struggle, and self-reflection in Taylor Swift’s “Anti-Hero”. Therefore, this study aims to identify the types of deixis found in the song lyrics Anti Hero by Taylor Swift and to describe the contextual meaning of those deixis. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method using a pragmatic approach based on Levinson’s (1983) deixis framework. The data source was the official song lyrics obtained from the Genius website and analyzed through systematic identification, classification, and contextual interpretation using an analytical rubric. The findings reveal that the lyrics contain several types of deixis, namely person, temporal, spatial, discourse, and social deixis, each contributing to the construction of meaning within the song. The study concludes that deixis in “Anti-Hero” functions not merely as a grammatical referencing system but as a pragmatic resource that shapes contextual meaning, emotional expression, and self-reflective narrative, allowing listeners to engage with the songwriter’s personal perspective.
