Abstract

This article explores the implementation of Narrow Listening (NL) in an Extensive Listening (EL) course at a private English Education Department in Indonesia, addressing a gap in research regarding student engagement. Guided by Krashen's theory of input and repetitive listening practices, the study examines how NL can aid learners in achieving fluency and automaticity. Employing a case study approach, data were collected through observations of 42 multilingual students aged 18 to 19 during their first semester in the 2023/2024 academic year. Analysis revealed themes of both positive and negative behavioral, emotional, and cognitive engagement among students. While many demonstrated increased motivation and comprehension, some expressed anxiety and discomfort with certain learning tasks. The findings suggest that NL can significantly improve listening skills, boost student motivation, and facilitate a conducive learning environment, ultimately leading to better language acquisition outcomes. This study contributes valuable insights for educators aiming to enhance best practices in tertiary English education in Indonesia.

Abstract

Abstract—This article discusses an examination of the teaching approaches employed by an English instructor at Bojonegoro Vocational High School. A qualitative approach was utilized to assess the methods implemented by the English teacher within the Multimedia Department at the Vocational High School. The data suggests that the teacher adhered to the 2013 curriculum by employing a Scientific Learning Approach, encompassing activities like observation, questioning, experimentation, association, and communication as fundamental components of the learning process. Additionally, the teacher frequently incorporated cooperative learning techniques, such as small group discussions and collaborative tasks. Regrettably, the instructional model for English mirrored that of general English, neglecting the consideration of English for Specific Purposes in vocational secondary education. Furthermore, the teacher used the same textbooks as traditional high schools, often inadequately addressing the specific needs of vocational students. The teacher asserted that time constraints and a lack of comprehension regarding the development of tailored teaching materials were limiting factors. Keywords— Teaching Strategy, English Teaching, English for Specific Purpose.

Abstract

This study examines the use of code mixing and code switching among university students during English classroom interaction. Using a descriptive qualitative design, data were collected from one English class consisting of 25 students through classroom observations, audio recordings, and interviews. The findings reveal three types of code switching (intersentential, intrasentential, and tag switching) and three types of code mixing (insertion, alternation, and congruent lexicalization). Students switched and mixed codes due to limited vocabulary, the need for clarification, classroom atmosphere, and peer solidarity. These practices served pedagogical, communicative, cognitive, and social functions. The study concludes that code switching and code mixing are natural bilingual strategies that support understanding and classroom engagement. Teachers are encouraged to apply strategic bilingual approaches to facilitate learning while promoting English proficiency.
