Abstract

Communicating in English is crucial for tourism services, considering that the tourists who visit tourism destinations are not only originated from the country (domestic tourists), but also from the overseas (foreign tourists). For this reason, learning English for tourism services needs to be conducted especially by the students of Tourism Destination Study Program to improve their English speaking skill. To provide a maximum result in improving the students’ English speaking skill, role-playing is an alternative activity to be conducted in the classroom. Therefore, the author implemented the role-playing activities for a period of time. To investigate how well the implementation went, an analysis was conducted.  Unfortunately, from the analysis, it was realized that the implementation of role-playing still showed non-optimal results. By employing SWOT analysis, it could be concluded that the implementation of role-playing had some strengths, including the high student participation, the improvement of English communication skill, a deeper material comprehension through simulation, as well as the enrichment of English vocabulary. However, some weaknesses were also found, including the difficulty of the students in memorizing all the text, the grammatical errors, the pronunciation mistakes and the lack of fluency due to environmental factor. It was added with some threats preventing the optimal implementation, such as the lack of determination in conducting the activity in the class, the students’ low motivation, the unprepared performance, as well as the lack of time to practice. Yet, role-playing still had the opportunity to be well implemented in English for tourism services since it provides a fun and interesting way of learning. Hence, those obstacles in implementing role-playing shall be overcome to increase the students’ English speaking skill in the future.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the need of English public speaking skill for students at the Tourism Destination Study Program and formulate the required solution. This study was motivated by recent student events called “Seminar Pariwisata” or Tourism Seminar where all the students had to present their projects from the Integrated Field Practicum and also “Duta Polije”, a contest where campus ambassadors were selected. This study was an aftermath evaluation following the conducted events with the hope to bring an improvement in the future for both the students and the study program. This was a descriptive-qualitative study and the data were collected through observation, documentation and interview. The results of the study show that there is a need in providing students with English public speaking skill through intensive public speaking classes, to support them especially in non-academic activities. This is also useful to equip them with additional competencies in order to help them in the workplace after graduation, especially to have a career in the tourism business. The class can be conducted during the running academic year by integrating the class with English courses, by adding the public speaking class at the speaking skill section of the RPS (Semester Teaching Plan) and BKPM (Student’s Workbook) of English courses. This idea is suggested to be taken into consideration to create a better educational supports for the students as well as for the development of the study program in the future.

This community service activity aims to develop a laundry service business as an effort to improve services and economic added value at the TEFA Integrated Hotel of Politeknik Negeri Jember. The development of a laundry service business is considered very important because Politeknik Negeri Jember or Polije is a vocational university with BLU (Public Service Agency) status where Polije must provide services to the community in the form of providing goods and / or services that are sold without prioritizing profit and in carrying out its activities based on the principles of efficiency and productivity. This business development is expected to make a significant contribution to the quality of service at the TEFA Integrated Hotel Polije and can improve the economic welfare of business actors and the surrounding community. Methods for implementing this community service activity include three stages, namely the planning, the implementation, and the evaluation stages. These three stages were detailed more into the stage of needs analysis, the implementation of visits to laundry services, the provision of tools and the latest technology in laundry services, as well as evaluation. Additionally, this community service activity also included assistance in terms of business management, marketing, and effective customer service. Based on the implementation of this community service activity, it is expected that the laundry service business at the TEFA Integrated Hotel Polije will experience an improvement in service quality and better economic benefits, which in turn will have a positive impact toward the campus community and its surroundings.

Abstract

As a vocational college, Politeknik Negeri Jember (Polije) has developed teaching factories, or TeFa, as one manifestation of ‘learning by doing’ to provide skilled graduates for the industrial world. TeFa Integrated Hotel, one of 29 Teaching Factories established by Polije, is gearing up to give the students a small-size hospitality industry simulation. Thus, it intends to improve services by one of which is initiating a hotel laundry business. This research aims to analyse the equipment needed to initiate a laundry business at the TeFa Integrated Hotel. This laundry business is essential for the TeFa to fulfil the needs of customers and its housekeeping section to suppress the operational costs. This research applied a descriptive-qualitative method by collecting data through in-depth interviews and Focus Group Discussions (FDG). The results showed that to start a laundry business, some equipment must be available, including work equipment such as washing machines, dryers, irons, and ironing boards, as well as consumable equipment such as detergent, softener, bleach, acids, and alkalis. For a small-sized hotel laundry, the work equipment standard that must be met includes the size of the washing machine, which is usually equipped with a drying machine between 8-20 Kg adjusted to the room quota and variety of customers. As equipment is the main supporter in running a business, this research can be impactful in determining the business's success in the future. Additionally, any service improvements made by TeFa Integrated Hotel will further support Polije in providing the best graduates to the industry.
