Abstract

This research aims to increase students’ learning activity in Media and Learning Resources class. The kind of research is classroom action research conducted two cycles with the subject is the fifth semester students of English departement. Technique of collecting data is observation and analyzing quantitatively and qualitatively.  From cycle I and cycle II, students’ learning activity is increasing . Research hypothes stated that the use of Number Heads Together technique can increase the students’ learning activity can be proven. It is concluded that the use of Number Heads Together (NHT) can increase students’ learning activity in Media and Learning Resources class. The students’ learning activity increases 37,5% , from 25% to 62,5%.  Number Heads Together should be developed and applied in every education level because this technique makes students are more aware that they are observed so it stimulates them to be active.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the students’ attitude toward English classroom environment especially English teacher, English material and English classroom management. This research used descriptive method to find out the students attitude toward English teacher, English material and English classroom management.The population of this research was the ninth year students of SMP Kartika Banjarmasin which consists of two classes so the totalis 67 students. The instrument of the research was questionnaire by using mean score to find out the mean score of them.The result of the data analysis of the questionnaire indicated that the students have positive attitude toward English teacher (59.80), the students have positive attitude toward English material (59) and the students have positive attitude toward English classroom management (55.92).Based on the result, some suggestions are proposed: (1)Generally, the student's attitude toward English classroom environment is positive but there are still some students have neutral attitude so that its suggested to English teacher at the SMP Kartika Banjarmasin in order to learn more skills and pay attention to the classroom environment’s factor and he should be creative in teaching English so that the students can be motivated in learning English (2) To the students, they should make English as interesting subject so that it can give benefit to the future.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menginvestigasi nilai – nilai karakter sebagai Kurikulum tersembunyi atau implicit learning dalam mata kuliah skill di Perguruan Tinggi Banjarmasin. Ada empat skill yang harus dikuasai dalam belajar Bahasa Inggris yaitu listening, speaking, reading dan writing. Rumusan Masalah dari penelitian ini adalah (1) Nilai - Nilai Karakter apa saja yang diperoleh mahasiswa secara tidak langsung pada saat pembelajaran mata kuliah Skill? (2) Bagaimana pembelajaran karakter secara tidak langsung yang diterima oleh mahasiswa dalam Mata kuliah Skill?.Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif dimana data yang diperoleh berupa deskripsi atau gambaran tentang nilai – nilai karakter yang diperoleh mahasiswa secara implisit pada saat pembelajaran mata kuliah Skill. Instrumen adalah observasi dan interview. Observasi dilakukan saat pembelajaran mata kuliah skill pada empat perguruan tinggi di Banjarmasin sebagai lokasi penelitian yaitu STKIP PGRI Banjarmasin, Universitas Lambung Mangkurat, Universitas Islam Kalimantan, dan IAIN Antasari Banjarmasin.. Interview dilakukan setelah kegiatan obsevasi dilaksanakan selama 3 kali Observasi proses pembelajaran. Data yang diperoleh dari observasi dan interview akan dianalisis melalui beberapa tahapan yaitu; transcribing, coding and classifying, interpreting, dan drawing conclussion. Berdasarkan hasil observasi terdapat beberapa karakter yang diberikan secara tidak langsung dalam pengajaran mata kuliah listening, speaking, reading dan writing meliputi Karakter Tanggung Jawab secara tidak langsung melalui kesungguhan dalam mengerjakan setiap arahan, latihan atau tugas. Karakter Rasa hormat melalui menghargai pendapat atau jawaban teman serta meminta ijin apabila akan meninggalkan kelas. Karakter keadilan dengan memberikan kesempatan yang sama bagi setiap mahasiswa untuk menjawab soal latihan. Karakter keberanian muncul saat mahasiswa berani mengangkat tangan untuk menjawab soal atau menyampaikan pendapat. Karakter rasa kebangsaan melalui kutipan dari tokoh nasional dan topik atau materi peringatan hari nasional. Karakter kejujuran secara tidak langsung terdapat saat mahasiswa mengerjakan latihan sendiri dan tidak membuka kamus apabila tidak diperbolehkan. Karakter disiplin diri melalui menempatkan kembali buku dan kursi yang sudah dipakai serta hadir sesuai jadwal. Karakter peduli secara tidak langsung terlihat melalui pendekatan dosen untuk mengecek pekerjaan mahasiswa. Karakter ketekunan terlihat melalui persiapan materi selanjutnya serta pengayaan referensi belajar.

Abstract

This article is a report of Community Service Program aiming at giving understanding and learning experience to the second grade students at SMKN 4 Banjarmasin in using English for tourism. The object of this program is 30 students of Tourism major. One day training program is carried out in form of practicing directly, doing the demonstration, simulation, and role play in the group. Furthermore, there are four topics to discuss as the material of this program, such as: using some expressions, information, and communication in English under tourism aspect. Generally, this program is well done. The students show their enthusiasm and demonstrate the activity successfully. There are still mistakes they have done in using grammar and pronouncing some English words. However, they show their best efforts running with the material given. Besides that, the majority of them are unfamiliar with the specific terms used in English for tourism so that they need to be guided in understanding the meaning of it. At the end of this program, the students are expected to have a learning experience and have the mastery to communicate using foreign language in the future. It will become essential knowledge to challenge in the job market globally.Keywords: Training, English, and tourism ABSTRAKArtikel ini merupakan hasil dari kegiatan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat yang bertujuan untuk memberikan pemahaman dan pengalaman belajar kepada siswa-siswi kelas XI Program Keahlian Usaha Perjalanan Wisata yang ada di SMKN 4 Banjarmasin dalam menggunakan Bahasa Inggris untuk pariwisata. Peserta kegiatan ini berjumlah 30 orang siswa. Kegiatan dilaksanakan dalam jangka waktu 1 hari dengan metode praktik secara langsung, demonstrasi, simulasi, dan bermain peran secara berkelompok. Sebanyak empat materi disajikan mengenai beberapa ungkapan, informasi, dan praktik komunikasi dalam Bahasa Inggris yang umum dan lazim digunakan dalam bidang pariwisata. Secara keseluruhan, kegiatan ini berjalan dengan baik. Siswa mampu mengikuti dan menampilkan demonstrasi secara langsung terkait materi yang diberikan. Walaupun masih terjadi banyak kesalahan dalam hal tata bahasa (grammar) dan pengucapan (pronunciation) Bahasa Inggris, siswa mampu menunjukkan usaha untuk memahami materi. Akan tetapi, mayoritas siswa masih belum familiar dengan kosakata-kosakata Bahasa Inggris tertentu dan spesifik berkaitan dengan kepariwisataan, sehingga perlu pendampingan untuk mengenal jenis kosakata-kosakata tersebut. Di akhir kegiatan, siswa diharapkan mendapatkan pengalaman belajar yang akan menjadi salah satu modal bagi mereka untuk ikut bersaing di dunia kerja yang secara global menuntut kecakapan berkomunikasi dalam bahasa asing.Kata Kunci: Pelatihan, Bahasa Inggris, pariwisata

Abstract

This study aimed to describe the reading interest of STKIP PGRI Banjarmasin students as well as the supporting and inhibiting factors of the reading interest. The method used in this study was descriptive qualitative using questionnaire, interview, and documentation. From the results of the study it can be concluded that the reading interest of STKIP PGRI Banjarmasin students is included in the low category. This is evidenced by: (1) 62.85% of students sometimes read before entering class; (2) 18.36% of students have a hobby of reading; (3) 54.46% of students prefer fiction books to scientific texts. Supporting factors are internal and external factors. Internal factors that support students' interest in reading are enjoyment of reading, the desire to always read, the purpose and benefits of reading and the environment, while external factors that support interest in reading are lecturers, the campus environment and the internet. In addition, it is also found that the factors that inhibit interest in reading, namely laziness and technology. Keywords : reading interest, supporting factors, inhibiting factors

Abstract

Speaking skill is one of skill has to master by English language students. In the speaking IV course, students train to speak English through practice public speech, seminar and debate also when the students present in front of the other student in learning process. The fluency of speaking skill is also supported by leaning strategies. The objective of this research was to describe learning strategies used by the eighth semester students as fluent speaker of English department at STKIP PGRI Banjarmasin. The data were processed and analysis based on the procedures that was chosen to find the strategies that used by the students as fluent speakers. Instruments for this research were questionnaire and interview. The result of this research revealed that the eighth semester students who are categorized as fluent speaker used all language learning strategies, the most frequently strategy used by students as fluent speakers was cognitive strategies and the least frequently strategy used by students as fluent speakers was social strategies.

Abstract

This paper pictures education changes into a technological system. Face to face class has to be limited because of the pandemic. In Indonesia, online learning is something new that needs adaptation to do because not all students are familiar with the system. Some students got some difficulties during online learning and students also have different views of this learning system. Emergency remote teaching (ERT) is meant to be a temporary shift from the normal modes of teaching. This takes what would have otherwise been face-to-face or hybrid teaching and transforms it to become digital education. The Mobile device can help the students continue their lessons through online classes because that is the alternative way to keep learning. Whatsapp Application can help students communicate and share knowledge with their teachers from a distance without face to face. Whatsapp application is then promoted as the alternative way in facing the remote learning situation. WhatsApp has become a shared platform that enhances accessibility, encourages cooperation, and intensifies motivation to take an active part in academic assignments.
