Abstract

This study explored sales promotion letters (SPLs) and company profiles (CPs) of two prominent batik companies in Solo, Central Java, Indonesia. This essay draws its data from the most important primary source of information on sales promotion letters and company profiles namely words, phrases, and clauses taken from the SPLs and CPs of batik written in Indonesian. Secondary sources were also consulted in this research, among these transcribed data obtained from in-depth interviews with the text writers and buyers. Three SPLs and two batik CPs were analyzed. In addition, two informants (marketing and promotion managers) typifying the text production perspective and two buyers typifying the text consumption perspective were interviewed. This research was guided by theories of genre analysis which focuses on patterns of rhetorical organization and genre-specific language features. This study employed the multi-dimensional and multi perspective model of analysis focusing on textual, socio-cognitive and ethnographic aspects of the texts. This study concludes that the strong Javanese cultural influence has made the underlying intention of gaining profits to be less explicitly stated. Secondly, the textual analysis and the in-depth interviews supported the view that CPs of batik had been ideally used to create a favorable image of the company. Thirdly, the most distinctive feature that differentiated establishing credentials in the Indonesian batik business context had been the utilization of a sense of moral obligation to preserve native culture. Fourthly, the chemistry between writers and readers of SPLs and CPs built a strong foundation for mutual understanding and thus paved the way for making purchases. To conclude, this study has shown how the wider culture and the culture of the discourse community has contributed to the framing and formatting of SPLs and CPs of batik in terms of lexico-grammar, cognitive structuring, intertextuality and interdiscursivity.

Abstract

Conditions and facilities of English language classes in the remote area encourage the negotiation of learning to solve problems. This narrative research aims to reveal strategies of pre-service teachers of the SM3T program in the process of the negotiation of English language learning. The study used diaries and interview transcripts from four teachers from Pidie Jaya and Sumba. The findings showthat teachers use interpersonal (IPS) and instructional (IS) strategies in the negotiation process. In Pidie Jaya, IPS strategies consist of the use of local languages and the help of local people. Meanwhile, IS strategies comprise learning groups and introduction to learning activities. In Sumba, teachers make language adjustment and establish rapport and informal communication as IPS strategies and they carry out buddy teaching and assign homework as IS strategies. This study contributes to the intercultural approach to designing English Language Education programs for remote areas. Keywords: EFL, remote areas, negotiation of learning STRATEGI GURU PRAJABATAN DALAM NEGOSIASI PEMBELAJARAN BAHASA INGGRIS DI DAERAH TERPENCIL Abstrak Kondisi dan fasilitas kelas Bahasa Inggris di daerah terpencil mendorong adanya negosiasi pembelajaran untuk menyelesaikan masalah. Abstract

Beliefs take a vital role in influencing students' decision about integrating digital literacy in EFL classroom. This case study investigated students' behavioral, control, and normative beliefs toward integrating digital literacy into the EFL classroom. This research used the Theory of Planned Behavior initiated by Ajzen to collect and analyze the data. The results of interviews and observations highlighted students' integration of digital literacy into EFL classroom referred to several beliefs. The behavioral beliefs (attitude toward advantages of a behavior) about the value of digital literacy for its effectiveness and efficiency potential to find information, to promote students cognitive skills and ethical awareness, and to improve English proficiency; normative beliefs (about social support) about the meeting of the expectation of school, teachers, parents, and friends; and control beliefs (about perceive behavioral control) about the opportunity and the availability to interact with the technology. This study highlighted a substantive theory related to the findings: Students' positive beliefs about integrating digital literacy into EFL classroom influence students' learning strategy. By having positive beliefs about the outcomes that students will get (behavioral beliefs), support from family, teachers, and the school environment (normative beliefs), as well as beliefs about the presence of factors that may facilitate or hinder the performance (control beliefs), students demonstrate the tendency to always use digital technology in learning English.

Abstract

This research aims to examine the self-representation of sensuous female influencers in Indonesia, specifically a 20-year-old female Javanese influencer who lives in Surakarta, on Instagram, and how the influencer publicly presents herself in front of the audience. Relying on Goffman’s Dramaturgical approach, this study provides thorough insights into the frontstage and backstage behavior of the sensuous female influencer and the representation of the influencer on the frontstage. Employing Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic triadic model (1931), the data obtained from Instagram were analyzed by understanding the representamen, the interpretant, and the object of the data. Then, to gain a more detailed understanding, the data collected from in-depth interviews were also scrutinized. This study shows that there is an act of rebellion of being against society's norms of modesty as the influencer constantly acts in a sexualized manner in public and daily activity. While previous studies mostly examine the phenomenon of the sexualized manner of women in hyper-sexualized cultures/Western cultures, this study provides an understanding of the sexualized manner of a sensuous Javanese female influencer in the area where people do not find self-sexualization behavior as common or prevalent.

Abstract

Discourse provides insight on the function and nature of cognitive-emotional phenomena. Empathetic notions of a community can be traced from their discourses and how the community members use them, especially in the context of business and promotion. This paper explores how values are reflected in the English and Javanese empathetic business and promotional discourses especially the business and promotional idioms, expressions, taglines, and descriptions. 31 out of 50 online English empathetic business idioms and 21 out of more than 300 printed Javanese proverbs and sayings were analyzed using the perspectives of ESP with a thick description on the context of both cultures. Additionally, a reflective analytical lens was also included considering that the author is a Javanese herself who is using and practicing the Javanese language and culture on daily basis. Findings of the study suggest a strong ground of how cultural beliefs and values transmitted from the ancestors for-grounding the practice of business interactions with some innovations following changing of time and expectations.

Abstract

This article explores how verbal violence on Facebook was performed by the users. It investigates the discursive strategy exploited by them. The data of verbal violence were taken from user comments to news update posted on Indonesian news portal fans pages under the topic of Paris tragedy. The comments were taken from four different Indonesian news fans pages, namely Detik.com, Kompas.com, Liputan6.com and Tribunnews.com. The collected data were analyzed qualitatively. Applying Discourse Historical Approach (DHA) proposed by Wodak, the result shows that the users exploits three strategies to perform verbal violence namely referential strategy, predicative strategy and argumentation strategy. Employing referential strategy, verbal violence is realized in the form of noun and noun phrase, which functions as subject, object and modifier of noun phrase. Employing predicative strategy, verbal violence is realized in the form of word, phrase and clause, which function as attribute or predicate. Employing argumentation strategy, verbal violence is realized in the form of sentence and discourse.
