Abstract

Abstract

This research is aimed to analyze the translation of Processes in the Expository Texts of `Ask Barbara: The 100 Most-Asked Questions about Love, Sex and Relationships`. Translation is expressing ideas in one language into another. In Systemic Functional Linguistics perspective, representation of ideas into language is part of the Ideational Meaning which focuses on the Process (verbal phrase) as the core of the clause. The SFL approach to translation studies should provide the technical terms as the linguistic evidence to account for the equivalence in the syntactical elements of the clause. The research question is: what are the Processes in the Expository Texts in Ask Barbara: `The 100 Most-Asked Questions about Love, Sex and Relationships`? The objective of this research is to find out the types of Process in the Source language (English) and those in the Target language (Indonesian). This is a descriptive qualitative study of an embedded case study type. The data source of this study is the popular book `Ask Barbara: The 100 Most-Asked Questions about Love, Sex and Relationships`. The data are the Processes in the texts. The purposive sampling technique was used to obtain the data through the content analysis and Focus Group Discussion. The technique of analyzing the data includes domain analysis, taxonomy analysis, componential analysis, and the cultural theme or values. The data analysis reveals that from 297 clauses in the target language, there are 18.8% Processes in the Thesis, 75.4% Processes in the Argument, and 11.8% Processes in the Reiteration. In each of the elements of the generic structure of the expository texts, there are 22 Relational Attributive (39.3%), 19 Material (33.9%), 11 Mental (19.6%), 2 Existential (3.5%), 1 Relational Identifying (1.8%) and 1 Verbal (1.8%) processes. The Argument part of the texts is made up of 85 Material (37.9%), 75 Relational Attributive (33.5%), 39 Mental (17.4%), 16 Verbal (7.1%), 4 Behavioral (1.8%), 3 Existential (1.3%) and 2 Relational Identifying (0.9%) processes. In the Reiteration part of the text, there are 17 Material (48.5%), 7 Mental (20.0%), 5 Relational Attributive (14.2%), 2Relational Identifying (5.7%), 2 Behavioral (5.7%), 1 Existential (2.8%) and 1 Verbal (2.8%) processes. In general, the expository texts in this book use 121 Material processes (40.7%), 102 Relational Atributive  (34.3%), 57 Mental (19.2%), 6 Existential (2%), 6 Behavioral (2%) and 5Relational Identifying (1.7%) processes. There are not many changes or shifts in the types of Process in the translation of this book. However, there are some shifts which include: 1 Material process becomes Mental process; 7 Relational:Attributive become Material processes; 3 Material processes become Relational:Attributive; 2 Material become Verbal processes; 2 Material become Existential processes; 1 Mental becomes Relational:Attributive process; 1 Relational:Attributive becomes Behavioral process and 1 Relational:Attributive becomes Mental process. Besides, there are also deletions of process in the translation because the processes are deleted or left untranslated.

Abstract

This aims to reveal the ways of criticizing American government and wheedling the audients believe trough each speech act in movie. Pragmatic multimodal perspective is used to uncover both speech act and the cinematic aspect in order to know how the movie producer criticize and persuade audients to believe. This research is presented Qualitatively and the data taken from David Michôd (2016) work “War Machines”. It was found that the movie has three ways in criticizing the government and persuading the audien to believe. They are; 1. To contradict between speech and multimodality of cinematic to create an offensive criticism structure. 2. Use of mutually supportive between speech acts of and multimodality to create a common criticism structure (mutual affirmation of speech acts and multimodality). 3. The use of personification of institutions to direct criticism of policy holders.

Abstract

Hedging devices are often used to express opinion rather than a fact of a proposition. Hedging devices are also expressing speaker uncertainty. What will happen when hedging devices are translated into the target language? Based on that question writer try to find out on how hedging devices are translated into target language using modulation technique. By using modulation technique, translator tries to understand the meaning of the hedging devices with different point of view. This study used qualitative methods in analyzing the data. The source data of this study is a novel written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, entitled Sherlock Holmes and its translation. Hedging devices found in this study were 96 data. Those data were translated using modulation technique. 96 data were divided into four such as, adaptors 66 data, rounders 6 data, plausibility shields 17 data and attribution shields 7 data. By using modulation technique translator translate those hedging devices with different hedging devices in the target language, but the function of the hedging devices are similar with the hedging devices of the source language.

Abstract

This research examines the two factors which effect on the raising of Indonesian morphology-syntactical interference. It aimed at delineating the potential effect of these two factors on the arising of Indonesian morphology-syntactical interference of undergraduate students majoring in English department of State Islamic Institute of Tulungagung and PGRI teacher training college of Tulungagung. 213 Javanese undergraduate students were selected based on two-step purposive sampling. To collect data, the researcher used observation and questionares in which the participants answered a set of 12 open-ended questions to measure the students’ term along with educational institution and Indonesian morphology-syntactical interference. To analyze the data, t-test on correlation and coefficient as well as linier stepwise multiple regressions were conducted through Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 17. Data analysis indicated that the independent variables significantly correlated with Indonesian morphology-syntactical interference. In addition, multiple regressions analysis specified different higher institution as the main contributing variable and students’ term as the second one on the arising of Indonesian interference. It also showed that students of English departments of state Islamic institution of Tulungagung got higher scores on the arising of Indonesian morphology-syntactical interference than those of PGRI teacher training college of Tulungagung. The reason may refer to the supporting environment that is higher language exposure. The results highlighted the longer the students’ term they have, the lower score on the arising of Indonesian morphology-syntactical interference they produce.

Abstract

This journal is aimed at investigating the accuracy of Kataku Version 1.1 and Transtool10 Rar and knowing its benefit for teaching writing. This is important because Computer Assisted Translation (CAT) has become a need and practical translation tool as a software to translate source language text (SL) into the target language (TL). The number of users of both devices requires a proof of whether both tools are qualified enough to translate from SL to TL. This study used descriptive qualitative methods with data collection techniques using documents, interviews and questionnaires. While the data analysis technique used component analysis consisting of four parts, that is, domain, taxonomy, component and cultural theme analysis using “criteria based sampling” 1 to 3, that is, accurate (3), less accurate (2) and not accurate (1). The results showed the quality of the "Kataku Version 1.1”was 24% accurate, 32% less accurate, and 45% inaccurate, while "Transtool. 10 Rar" was 33% accurate, 32% less accurate, and 35% inaccurate. Of the two CATs above, Transtool10 RAR has a higher level of accuracy than Kataku Version 1.1. In terms of error, the most common mistakes made by both were sequentially at semantic level, syntax, phrase, word order, lexical, lost in contact, and word content. However, from the error rate made by the two translation tools, Transtools 10 Rar got less error than the Kataku Version 1.1. In the case of teaching language, using these two software in translation was still very advantageous, especially for teaching writing and reading. By knowing the quality results of translation from one language to another, the students got much improvement by analyzing errors of vocabulary usages, grammar, the messages of the texts and writing products because as known that translator  was the  writer too. However, there was still a little obstacles using both software especially if the users saw the results of translation only as the collection of words which were isolated and independent. Its effects led to the misuses of the words either it is used in collocation or in  terms of different genre of the texts. Thus it can be concluded that the two tools are not feasible to be used to translate various texts without involving professional translation experts by using appropriate proofreading and editing. In addition, for teaching language, both software are still effective and good for future applied language teaching and learning.
