Abstract

Having the ability to write in English has started to become a necessity as a form of active reaction to the development of global communication where English is the official means of international communicaation. It is a huge challenge for students, especially in Indonesia. Of the four language skills, writing has its own challenges and is still considered the most difficult skill to master by most Indonesian students. The quality of a writing is assessed by four indicators, development of ideas, vocabulary choices, and the proper use of grammar and punctuation. These four variables must then be presented in a writing structure appropriate to the genre. The present research is part of a community service activity where the research target is students at an elementary school in Merauke City. There are several stages in the activity, observation, teaching, and post-test. Preliminary observations showed students' weak writing skills which later became the main consideration in preparing teaching materials. The writing learning method using procedural text is selected on the basis of the suitability of students' interests and abilities. The results of the post-test found that more than half of the total number of students showed an increase in writing ability with procedure text and most errors are found in the use of grammar

Abstract

This study investigates the motivations and attitudes towards learning English among law students in Indonesia. Using a quantitative approach, 54 law students from a prominent Indonesian university were surveyed. Descriptive statistics and correlation analyses were employed to examine relationships between motivational factors, attitudes, and self-assessed proficiency. The findings reveal strong instrumental motivation driven by career prospects and academic advancement. While students value English proficiency, a notable gap exists between perceived importance and self-assessed language skills, mainly speaking and listening. Challenges in legal vocabulary acquisition and oral communication were identified as key areas for improvement. The study also found a preference for multimedia and interactive learning methods. These insights provide valuable direction for enhancing legal English education in Indonesia, suggesting a more tailored, interactive, and technology-enhanced approach that addresses law students' specific needs and preferences.

Abstract

Language is a fundamental component of culture, facilitating the exchange of cultural knowledge and the formation of identity among cross-cultural users. This study investigates EFL students’ intercultural experiences and how these experiences are reflected in their writings as they attempt to negotiate and maintain their cultural identity. As a part of English language learning, producing written texts requires comprehension of linguistic traits entangled in culture. The success of foreign language learning has a greater chance when cultural considerations become integral to the learning process. Therefore, lecturers and students must recognize the inseparable relationship between language and culture and that culture is not limited to the ways it is expressed through words. The data were gathered from students’ argumentative essays on a culturally sensitive topic and analyzed using Ivani?’s identity framework, focusing mainly on the autobiographical and discoursal selves, supplemented by in-depth interviews. The findings indicate that despite diverse cultural experiences, all students expressed similar perspectives on the issue, aspiring to be recognized as individuals with a moral foundation inherent to their culture.  Keywords: written discourse; cultural experience; culture; identity, EFL students
