Abstract

The implementation of Islamic law through the establishment of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia is a long-standing historical phenomenon. This process has led to social fragmentation, resulting in the disintegration of the Indonesian people both within the nation and state. This article examines the progressive response of the Lirboyo Islamic Boarding School alumni and student communities to the democratic process by introducing the fiqh of nationality, particularly in light of the rise of salafism ideology. Specifically, this article focuses on the use of the fiqh of nationality as a logical counter to the puritanism paradigm, which views human subjectivity as limited to carrying out God's commands. The aim is to identify patterns in the exploration of the meaning of normative texts that promote social and humanist goals and religious values. Additionally, this article reveals social strategies employed in representing the fiqh of nationality in the public sphere. A qualitative approach was employed as a method to discover important aspects of text exploration strategies and patterns. To provide more detailed text patterns and exploration, interviews were conducted with several senior students who initiated the discourse on the fiqh of nationality, as well as with several caregivers. The research findings indicate that the fiqh of nationality emerged as a result of a dynamic dialectic with citizenship phenomena at the local and global levels, which seeks to counter the tendencies of certain groups to generate monolithic religious propositions and understandings.

Abstract

Abstract

The phenomenon of stereotypes against women who wear the niqab is still prevalent among students, particularly at UIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya (UINSA). The niqab, which is generally associated with a religious symbol, is often misunderstood and linked to negative images, especially those related to radical groups and terrorism. This study aims to reveal how stereotypes toward women wearing the niqab are formed among UINSA students and to analyze the differences in the actual meaning of the niqab symbol. Using symbolic interactionism theory, this study examines the differences between the campus community’s perceptions of the niqab and the personal reasons held by women who wear it. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with in-depth interviews and observations of students who are the research subjects and women who wear the niqab as the research subjects. The study results indicate that the stereotypes developed among UINSA students are more influenced by a lack of understanding of the meaning behind wearing the niqab, which often differs from the general perceptions that have developed in the campus community. This study is expected to contribute to correcting misunderstandings and strengthening a more inclusive understanding of religious symbols in the social context of Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to examine in depth how religion functions as a source of moral and social legitimacy in confronting and resisting racism as depicted in Joko Anwar’s film The Siege at Bukit Duri. The film was chosen because it portrays complex social dynamics where religion operates not only as a belief system but also as a moral foundation that strengthens solidarity amid social tension and identity conflict. This research employs a qualitative method with a content analysis design to interpret the symbolic meanings of scenes that portray discrimination, injustice, and the community’s resistance against social and political hegemony. Émile Durkheim’s theory serves as the main framework to explain religion’s role as a social fact that shapes collective consciousness, maintains moral order, and reinforces human values. The findings show that religious symbols such as the hijab, religious figures, and the slogan “we are all the same” act as forms of moral legitimacy that strengthen solidarity against discrimination. The urgency of this research lies in its contribution to expanding the sociology of religion through popular media, which reflects contemporary social realities and demonstrates how religious values can become a means of resistance to domination.

Abstract

This research departs from the phenomenon of the increasing use of YouTube in Indonesia, which ranks as the fourth largest in the world and thus holds a strategic value in disseminating religious messages. The central issue lies in the shift of religious practices into digital spaces, marked by the emergence of new religious communities, the transformation of authority, and the affirmation of identity shaped through Islamic preaching content on YouTube. The purpose of this study is to explain how mediated Islamic networks are formed in cyberspace and how they influence patterns of social interaction and religiosity within society. To address these issues, a qualitative method was employed with a multisite content analysis approach on various Islamic-themed YouTube channels. Data were collected from several popular accounts to map networking patterns, interactions, and audience responses. The findings reveal that the mediatization of religion on YouTube produces at least three significant outcomes: the formation of virtual communities that transcend geographical boundaries, the strengthening of group identity through symbolic and visual narratives, and the shift of religious authority from traditional scholars to digital public figures. In conclusion, YouTube functions not merely as a medium of entertainment but also as a strategic arena for the diffusion of Islamic messages and as a new sphere for the emergence of digital religious practices that influence contemporary understandings and expressions of religiosity.

Abstract

This paper explores the clause “Namely in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ” within the context of the meaning disruptions that occur in the post-truth era, particularly as influenced by social media. Historically rooted in the practice of immersion baptism within the Pantecostalism tradition since the Dutch East Indies era, this clause has undergone shifts in perception and has even been stigmatized as deviant teaching by various digital actors in today’s public sphere. Using a qualitative approach that combines digital ethnography and content analysis, this study investigates the representation, interpretation, and rejection of the clause across various digital platforms. The findings indicate that social media has transformed into a theatrical arena where digital figures renegotiate theological meanings through personal expressions of faith intertwined with viral public opinion. This research contributes to academic discussions on post-truth Indonesia’s Pantecostalism in the religious landscape shaped by social media. It highlights how the transformation of Indonesian Pantecostal theology is influenced by subjectivity, emotion, and the dynamics of viral digital information-oftenly by cyberbullying they ignore historical foundations, sociological data, and biblical truths. These findings emphasize the urgency for the church to critically engage with digital developments as a new arena for shaping understandings of faith.

Abstract

This study examines the growing influence of algorithmic governance on religious authority and knowledge production in digital environments, particularly within the Muslim digital sphere. In the contemporary onlife condition, where online and offline realities increasingly converge, algorithmic systems shape the visibility, interpretation, and circulation of Islamic discourse. This raises a critical question: how can Islamic jurisprudence respond to the epistemic and ethical challenges posed by algorithmic power? This article explores digital fiqh as an epistemological and normative framework capable of critically engaging algorithmic structures through the lens of maqāṣid al-sharīʿah. The study employs a critical qualitative approach using digital hermeneutics and multidisciplinary literature analysis, drawing on theoretical perspectives from algorithmic epistemology, Islamic legal theory, and digital ethics. The findings indicate that fiqh should be reinterpreted not merely as a legal product but as an epistemic apparatus capable of evaluating algorithmic governance and negotiating justice, dignity, and meaning in digitally mediated environments. Theoretically, this study expands the scope of maqāṣid into the domain of digital ethics, addressing issues such as privacy, algorithmic bias, and data commodification. Practically, it proposes the integration of digital literacy in Islamic education, the development of alternative digital platforms, and the promotion of digital self-determination within Muslim communities. This article argues that digital fiqh can function not only as a normative response to technological change but also as a decolonial strategy for reclaiming Islamic epistemic sovereignty in the algorithmic world order.
