Abstract

The present study aimed to examine the attitudes and types of metaphorical perceptions of male and female prospective English teachers (PETs) towards their English learning process. Elicitation sheet with the prompt “English learning is (like) … because …†was used to collect the data. The data were qualitatively analyzed by listing, naming, categorizing, and determining the metaphors. The results of the elicited metaphors reveal that male and female PETs’ attitudes towards English learning process include positive, negative, ambivalent, and neutral perceptions. Both male and female PETs viewed English learning in different attitudes. Male PETs generated more negative attitudes than the positive ones, while female PETs produced more positive attitudes than the negative ones. The findings also show that the metaphors were categorized into several types such as enjoyable activity, construction work, movement/journey, experience, planting/farming, exploration, and things. These types of metaphor imply the importance of the socio-cultural background of the learners. In conclusion, the metaphors help to determine appropriate strategies, methods, and materials for English teaching and learning.

Abstract

The aim driving the study is to develop instructional strategies that best fit students to enhance higher order thinking skills through questioning strategy. A university class consisting of thirty students is taking part in the study on Quantitative Research Methodology. The study is classroom action research with two steps. Preliminary study reveals that students had insufficient understanding towards HOTS (Higher Order Thinking Skills) and needed awareness raising towards critical thinking. A questioning strategy-based lesson plan, observation sheets, and critical thinking questionnaire were developed based on a questioning strategy approach. The findings indicate that the questioning strategy significantly enhances critical thinking skills. This result suggests teachers use questioning strategy to assist students' progress critical thinking. The implication of the study is that teachers should have the HOTS to facilitate and cultivate critical thinking among students and establish a thinking-oriented classroom

Abstract

This research intends to conduct a systematic literature review on the use of Discord application in education. The use of technology, such as learning applications in education today is increasing day by day. One such application used by educators is Discord. While some literature reviews have touched on the topic, there is still much to be explored regarding its use in education. Therefore, this study synthesized the findings on two key aspects, namely contributions and developments on Discord by searching empirical research in databases such as Mendeley.com, Connected Papers, and Google Scholar. To deeply explore the research article, the researchers utilized the SLR procedure by Petticrew and Roberts (2006), and to guide the reviews, the researchers used PRISMA 2020 by Page et al. (2021). The research findings revealed that many studies explored students' perceptions of Discord's contributions to the class. While most reported positive perceptions, some revealed negative perceptions due to the application's poor network connection. Furthermore, most of the developments were applied in flipped-based classrooms to test out the created learning system. In conclusion, the researchers found that Discord has made numerous educational contributions and created a new virtual environment.
