Abstract

This paper reports a classroom action research which conducted in an EFL classroom. The problem of this study is that teaching and learning process tends to be monotonous due to the single method used by English teachers. The learners` speaking course is familiarized with English structures. It requires a communicative and constructive method such as TBLT. The purpose of this study is to describe the effectiveness of TBLT in enhancing students` speaking skill. 30 EFL learners at the seventh semester at STAIN Kerinci took a part in this study. The instruments used to collect the data were speaking test, observation, and field-note. The results of the study showed that there were 2 cycles needed to implement the method. The process of teaching and learning in the first cycle indicates that TBLT improved learners` speaking skill, though some problems were needed to be solved. Unlike the cycle I, the process in the cycle II was improved in term of learners` speaking score and their motivation to attend the course if compared with those in cycle I. So, it is concluded that TBLT is an appropriate method to improve learners` speaking skill.

Abstract

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has both advantages and disadvantages for learners in an ELT classroom. The roles of ICT are not separated from their weaknesses, since each function of ICT tools is not only helpful , but also harmful for learners if they are utilized in a wrong way. Fortunately, the use of ICT in the classroom should always be promoted by English teachers who expect that their learners will obtain more and up-to-date information via the tools such as the internet. To convince, the teachers are the models of using the tools. They have to present effective and modern ways of learning by using advanced tools such as the internet, android mobile phone, and other types of wireless tools. Theories have to be followed by a real practice that can be easily achieved by the learners. The more practice they practice, the better they will be. The fact has been testified by many experts in the use of ICTs in education.

Abstract

The purposes of this study were to find out the kinds of preferred authentic materials (AMs) utilized by EFL learners at Islamic State College of Kerinci (STAIN Kerinci), Indonesia; and, to explore the learners` perceptions on the utilization of preferred AMs in EFL classrooms. This study was carried out of phenomenological approach by employing focus-group interviews towards seven learners selected by using purposive sampling technique. The findings of the study show that the EFL learners utilize various kinds of AMs including internet-mediated AMs, printed AMs, audiovisual (video) AMs, and audio AMs. Based on the learners, each kind of materials has either advantages or disadvantages. The advantages of AMs are improving and developing skills or abilities on listening, reading, speaking, writing, vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. The materials also make the learners aware of the importance of native-speaker cultures through which real English is learnt. However, the disadvantages of AMs are unlimited in length and lack of academic instructions. The problems are solved by adapting each material based on EFL learners` levels and by providing instructions for each AMs. EFL teachers are to provide various AMs for EFL classrooms. The AMs should be selected and balanced with EFL learners` English abilities or levels.

Abstract

A character building has become the main plan of Kindergarten, Elementary, Junior High, and Senior High Schools. Besides, it is also the main focus in a higher education context such as a college, institute, or university. The character building, in a higher education, has been successfully done by inserting good local cultures as one of influencing factors that affect such character building. The local cultures, including moral values and wisdoms, become predictors of how good characters are formally built. This participatory-observation research studies how such local cultures are implemented in building good characters in a college. The results of this study show that there are at least five ways of inserting such local cultures into the character building, namely: 1) integrating moral values and wisdoms into a lecture preparation (e.g syllabus or teaching materials); 2) being accustomed to implementing local cultures in pre-lecturing, whilst-lecturing, and  post-lecturing activities; 3) integrating such cultures into teaching methods or techniques (e.g think pair share); 4) adjusting such cultures with classroom atmosphere; and 5) combining both culture and character concepts with scientific thoughts.   Keywords: Local cultures, Character Building, Teaching activities, Teaching methods, Scientific thoughts
