Abstract

This study investigates the understanding and beliefs of Acehnese teachers concerning autonomous learning as mandated in the 2013 curriculum and how their beliefs about the concept of learner autonomy were applied in their teaching practices. The purposes of this research were: 1) to find out what is the understanding of English Foreign Language (EFL) teachers concerning autonomous learning, and 2) to find out howwell the EFL teachers performed at implementing autonomous learning as mandaited in the 2013 curriculum. The data was obtained by studying 4 EFL teachers from two different schools. It was collected in two phases of study, utilising both a quantitative method (a survey) and qualitative methods (interviews and observations). The instruments used for collecting the data were a questionnaire, interviews and field note observation. This study found that the teachers studied generally lacked understanding about learner autonomy and there were some inconsistencies between the  beliefs of the teachers’and their actual teaching practices regarding learner autonomy, as little evidence could be found that many students regarded themselves as autonomous learners in their studies. The findings from this study will hopefully provide teachers and policy-makers with new insights into fostering learner autonomy to improve the educational system in Indonesia especially in Aceh.

Abstract

In the process of teaching, teachers must employ various strategies to ensure that students grasp and understand the subjects they are learning. One effective strategy for teaching reading is the Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) approach. The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of the STAD technique on improving the reading comprehension scores of students at SMK Kesehatan Assyifa School in Banda Aceh. The sample for this research comprised of twenty-six second-semester grade XI students. The research involved conducting pre-tests and post-tests. The pretest was administered before implementing the STAD strategy and the posttest was conducted after four sessions of STAD treatment. The reading tests encompassed five aspects that aid in enhancing students' reading comprehension; identifying topic sentences, main ideas, details, inferences, synonyms/antonyms, and conclusions. The findings of the study revealed that students improved their reading comprehension through the STAD technique by engaging in discussions with their peers about the issues presented in the reading texts. A comparison of the pretest and posttest results demonstrated that the average score in the posttest was higher than in the pretest. Specifically, the students achieved an average score of 80.19% in the posttest, meeting the criteria for completing the minimum competency standard (KKM) set at 73%. Moreover, the students collaborated in heterogeneous teams to maximize their improvement in each cycle, which fostered a competitive atmosphere in the classroom and heightened students’ motivation to comprehend the reading texts.

Abstract

This study examines the intersection between institutional academic requirements and the linguistic challenges faced by undergraduate art students concerning the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). In many Indonesian universities, TOEFL is mandated as a condition for graduation, positioning it as a vital component of academic success. However, for students in non-English disciplines, especially the arts, this requirement often poses a significant barrier due to limited exposure to English in their coursework. This research adopts a qualitative approach through semi-structured questionnaire and interviews with 43 art students to explore perceptions, preparation strategies, and motivational dynamics related to TOEFL. Using thematic analysis, key findings reveal that while students acknowledge the importance of TOEFL for future academic and professional opportunities, they frequently lack the necessary linguistic preparation, support, and test-taking strategies. Challenges such as inadequate vocabulary, low familiarity with standardized test formats, test-related anxiety, and limited integration of English in the art curriculum emerged prominently. Furthermore, the study identifies a predominance of extrinsic motivation such as graduation requirements and employment prospects rather than intrinsic interest in language mastery. These findings suggest a disconnect between institutional expectations and the lived academic experiences of art students. The study recommends incorporating English for Specific Purposes programs tailored to the arts, greater institutional support through preparatory workshops, and the integration of English into creative academic learning. Addressing these factors is crucial to enhancing both compliance with graduation standards and the development of functional English proficiency.
