Abstract

The Al Amin Science and Industrial Park (Living Lab) is a projected area intended to become a center for field laboratories and workshops accommodating all study programs at UNPAB. The area is also planned to become Ecoedutourism (Eco-educational tourism). One of the functions to be developed in this area is livestock farming. In the face of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015, especially in the food sector, specific standardization is required for livestock products. Therefore, the concept of Good Animal Husbandry Practices (GAHP) needs to be implemented. Thus, there is a need for planning the design concept of supporting buildings in the livestock area of the Al Amin Science and Industrial Park (Living Lab) that considers GAHP. The implementation of GAHP aims to ensure that the livestock products produced are safe for consumption with appropriate quality for consumers. Additionally, it ensures that livestock products are produced correctly without causing environmental, health, safety, and welfare losses/damages to workers in the livestock sector. The objective of this research is to produce a design for supporting buildings in the livestock area of the Al Amin Science and Industrial Park (Living Lab) based on GAHP. The results of this design are expected to guide the development of supporting buildings in the livestock area of the Al Amin Science and Industrial Park (Living Lab).

Abstract

Abstract

This empirical study aims to comprehensively analyze the income level, production efficiency, and overall financial performance of beef cattle farmers implementing intensive, semi-intensive, and extensive husbandry systems in Pulo Bandring District, Asahan Regency. A descriptive quantitative research approach was employed by systematically gathering empirical field data through structured questionnaires, observation, and in-depth interviews with local livestock farmers. The collected primary data were rigorously processed, standardized, and converted into structured numerical representations to facilitate objective statistical interpretation. Quantitative metrics evaluated in this investigation focused comprehensively on variable and fixed production costs, gross sales revenues, net profit margins, revenue-cost ratios for financial feasibility, livestock disease resilience, and stocking density management practices. Comparative financial analysis was executed to evaluate the distinct economic viability, operational challenges, and resource utilization efficiency inherent to each husbandry pattern. The empirical findings reveal significant variations in profitability across the three management systems, providing critical insights into how strategic operational choices directly determine farm economic sustainability. Ultimately, this research offers practical policy recommendations for smallholder farmers, extension agents, and regional governments to optimize resource allocation, enhance modern husbandry practices, and support sustainable livestock development in the region.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the large amount of agricultural waste, particularly corn waste in the form of corn cobs (Zea mays L.), which has not been optimally utilized and is generally considered to have little economic value. One effort to utilize this waste is to process corn cobs into an alternative feed for ruminants through fermentation using MA-11 as a bioactivator or decomposer starter inoculum. This study aimed to determine the nutritional content of corn cobs after fermentation with MA-11 and to evaluate the effectiveness and potential of MA-11 in reducing crude fiber content. The study employed an experimental method using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD), consisting of three MA-11 concentrations, namely 1%, 3%, and 7%, along with a negative control of 0%. The observed parameters included crude fiber reduction, color, and aroma of the fermented material or silage. The results showed that MA-11 contains beneficial microorganisms capable of decomposing organic matter and contributing to the fermentation process. The concentration of MA-11 and fermentation duration had a significant effect (p < 0.05) on crude fiber content. Higher concentrations of MA-11 and longer fermentation periods resulted in a greater reduction in crude fiber content. Fermentation for 3 days produced the best results in reducing crude fiber, thereby improving the quality and digestibility of corn cobs as a livestock feed ingredient.
