Abstract

Given the myriads of possible configurations within online learning, careful design and selection of technology and media that count the students' needs and conditions should be at the central attention of the developers in order to accommodate the students' needs and to avoid developing ineffective and unproductive online learning. This study aims at analyzing the needs of the students in the online English language learning at the Intensive Foreign Language Learning Program, Alauddin State Islamic University, Makassar. This study used developmental research. Purposively sampled, 70 respondents participated in this study including 50 students, 10 lecturers, and 10 graduates. Two types of information were analyzed namely the students’ language learning needs and the students’ perceptions of technology and media for their online learning. The findings can be the basis for developing sound online language learning in the program, considering the absence of any research-based online learning there.

Abstract

Abstract

Academic writing instruction in EFL higher education is often planned without comparing learners’ perceptions with the expectations of more experienced stakeholders. This study examined perceived needs for academic writing instruction at UIN Alauddin Makassar, Eastern Indonesia, and identified areas of convergence and divergence among 51 fourth-semester students, 100 senior students who had completed an academic writing course, and two academic writing lecturers. A quantitative descriptive needs-analysis design used a structured questionnaire covering perceived EFL proficiency, the importance and goals of academic writing, confidence in writing tasks, preferred topics, and instructional activities. Frequencies, percentages, and mean scores were calculated separately for each group and compared descriptively across stakeholder groups. All groups viewed academic writing as important and identified summarizing and paraphrasing as a shared area of low confidence. However, they differed in evaluations of critical source use and preferred learning activities: senior students prioritized workshops and AI-assisted learning, whereas lecturers favored peer review and individual writing tasks. The study contributes a context-sensitive, multi-stakeholder account that connects needs analysis with academic literacy by showing that perceived general EFL proficiency does not necessarily indicate readiness for source-based academic writing. The findings support instruction that combines diagnostic assessment, explicit source-literacy development, scaffolded feedback, and carefully guided technology use. Because the evidence is perception-based and drawn from one institution, the results represent reported needs rather than direct measures of writing performance.

Abstract

Academic writing challenges in EFL higher education are often framed as deficiencies in students’ language and writing skills, with less attention to the pedagogical and institutional conditions through which academic writing is taught. This study investigated challenges perceived by current students, course-experienced students, and lecturers in a Writing for Academic Purposes course at an Indonesian university. A quantitatively driven explanatory sequential mixed-methods design was employed. Questionnaire data from 153 participants were summarized using item-level mean scores, while semi-structured interviews with 12 participants were analyzed through Reflexive Thematic Analysis. Lea and Street’s Academic Literacies Model served as a sensitizing theoretical lens. The quantitative findings indicated recurring concerns related to AI literacy instruction, feedback, interpersonal interaction, teaching variation, instructional constraints, and difficulties across ideation, planning, drafting, and revision. The qualitative analysis developed four themes: standards without dialogue, scaffolding without agency, AI as unofficial writing infrastructure, and writing development under divided responsibility. In this study, divided responsibility refers to the distribution of responsibility for writing development across student engagement, pedagogical practices, and institutional conditions rather than its attribution to learners alone. Taken together, the findings suggest tensions among technical skills instruction, academic socialization, student agency, institutional expectations, and emerging AI-mediated writing practices. The study highlights the need for more dialogic feedback, transparent assessment, agency-oriented scaffolding, and explicit critical AI literacy in EFL academic writing instruction.
