Abstract

This class action research aims to apply the Numbered Head Together learning model to improve student learning outcomes in English subjects, especially for reading comprehension skills at the junior level, namely in class VII SMP Negeri 1 Merauke in the 2022/2023 academic year. This research is a Classroom Action Research (CAR), where Classroom Action Research (CAR) is research conducted in two stages of the cycle, where each cycle I and cycle II is carried out twice the learning process meeting. Each cycle consists of 4 stages, namely planning, implementation, observation and reflection. The subjects in this study were 32 seventh grade students. The success indicator of this study is if 75% of students can achieve the Minimum Completeness Criteria (KKM) value of 70. The results showed that the application of the Numbered Head Together (NHT) Learning Model in class VII SMP Negeri 1 Merauke showed an increase in the completeness of students' learning achievement in cycle I with an average of 61.65% increasing to 80.28% in cycle II. The percentage of learning completeness also increased from cycle I by 12.5% increasing to 100% in cycle II. In addition, There was also a very significant increase in each teacher and student activity based on the observation sheet. Where in cycle I the teacher's activities were at 89.28% and students at 66.07%, then increased in cycle II, where teacher activities became 96.42% and students at 91.07%.

Abstract

This study investigates how affective meaning is linguistically realized in English song lyrics and examines its pedagogical implications for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). While songs have frequently been used as instructional media in language classrooms, limited attention has been paid to how emotional meanings are constructed and interpreted semantically by English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. This qualitative study analyzed three contemporary English songs—Someone Like You by Adele, Fight Song by Rachel Platten, and Fix You by Coldplay—using Leech's framework of affective meaning. The study also involved 25 undergraduate students from the English Education Study Program at Universitas Musamus, Indonesia, who were observed in the classroom, asked to complete written interpretation tasks, and interviewed using semi-structured interviews. The findings reveal that affective meaning is predominantly realized through three linguistic resources: evaluative lexical items, metaphorical expressions, and connotative symbols. Among these, evaluative lexis was the most readily interpreted by students, whereas metaphorical and symbolic expressions required contextual discussion and semantic scaffolding to achieve deeper understanding. The classroom implementation further demonstrated that guided semantic analysis of song lyrics enhanced learners' interpretative competence, encouraged critical discussion, and promoted greater awareness of emotional meaning in authentic discourse. This study contributes to semantic research by extending the application of affective meaning theory to authentic song lyrics and demonstrates its pedagogical value for TESOL. The findings suggest that song lyrics should be regarded not merely as motivational classroom materials but also as linguistically rich texts that foster semantic awareness, critical interpretation, and contextual language learning.

Abstract

Abstract

Debate competence is essential in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning, yet many learners struggle with critical thinking, argumentation, and persuasive communication. While artificial intelligence (AI) offers promising support, evidence of its effectiveness in debate learning remains scarce. This study aims to evaluate the impact of AI Debater technology on the debate performance of EFL learners and explore the perceptions of its use among lecturers and learners. A quasi-experimental design was employed, involving 20 EFL learners and one lecturer, with data collected through observations and online interviews. Post-test results showed significant improvements in debate performance, with mean scores of 77.45 for content, 78.75 for arguments, and 79.35 for claims. Learners also reported positive perceptions: 85% rated the AI Debater as very useful, while 80% and 75% valued its role in developing claims and arguments, and 90% evaluated content positively; however, only 50% found it highly effective for collaboration. Complementing these findings, lecturers perceptions emphasized three areas: (1) reasons for choosing the AI Debater, such as accessibility, up-to-date information, suitability for 21st-century learners, and time efficiency, (2) its impact, including improved critical thinking, reasoning, negotiation, analytical skills, and persuasive communication, and (3) challenges, such as reliability issues, lack of creativity and empathy, and concerns about educational integrity. While AI Debater shows potential for enhancing debate skills, the absence of a control group, small sample size, and limited consideration of contextual factors constrain findings. Future research should address these gaps to deepen the understanding of AI in EFL debate learning.

Abstract

Digital communication has transformed branding into a discursive practice in which language constructs organizational identity and fosters audience engagement. This study investigates the linguistic strategies used by Indonesian indie publishers in digital branding by integrating Critical Discourse Analysis, Systemic Functional Linguistics, and Appraisal Theory. Using a qualitative multiple-case study design, the research analyzed digital texts from Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and official websites of selected indie publishers. Data were examined through lexical, interpersonal, evaluative, and discursive analyses to identify recurring branding patterns. The findings show four dominant strategies: literacy-oriented lexical choices, inclusive interpersonal language, positive appraisal resources, and narrative framing. Indonesian indie publishers do not rely mainly on overt commercial promotion, but position themselves as collaborative literacy partners committed to education, knowledge dissemination, and community empowerment. The study implies that strategic language use can build persuasive, credible, and community-oriented digital branding in the publishing sector across adaptive digital communication platforms effectively.
