Abstract

The most crucial aspect of a collaborative process, face to face or online, is the face of participants, which is the focus of this research. The face is a direct indicator of the importance for individuals to maintain face (self-esteem) for themselves and for their culture group. This research uses a qualitative interpretive approach of ethnomethodology. The subjects observed in this study are a virtual team of three universities: (one from Indonesia and two from the USA), which meets regularly via Skype videoconferencing. Conversation analysis is used to analyze how participants construct their conversation in collaborating to make decisions. The result of this study is the construction or mapping of the individual facework strategies from individualistic and collectivistic cultures. The implication of this research is a model constructing face strategy mapping of individuals, which explains how individuals negotiate their face in virtual collaboration inter-culturally and are very relevant in the advancement of Face-Negotiation Theory.

Abstract

Baduy is a tribe that adheres to ancestral traditions, a social system based on cultural values, beliefs, and rules passed down for generations. Nevertheless, they are now touched by digitalization. This study considers challenges, difficulties, and potential advantages when communities, especially women in remote, rural, non-electrified homes, are equipped with fundamental communication technology knowledge and competence. It aims to identify critical factors and trends of indigenous Baduy women's participation in ICT and examines the practices enabling women's participation in social media. Primary data of research is the result of observation and in-depth interviews, while secondary data is the result of documentation. This research is based on the theory of technology domestication, which emphasizes the role of users in making media technology usable in their daily context. The empirical and qualitative fieldwork data results reveal how indigenous Baduy women construct their sense of reality in the vortex of digital transformation while struggling to maintain their traditional culture. Findings are presented with a discussion of the implications and challenges for new media uses as a means of cultural production for alternative, more socially oriented purposes.

Abstract

This study explores the communication strategies utilized by FamilyMart retail stores to enforce the ban on plastics bags, aiming to support sustainable environmental development. As environmental concerns become increasingly significant, retail businesses are at the forefront of promoting sustainable practices. This research investigates how FamilyMart conveys its environmental policies to customers and the broader community to encourage behavior change towards eco-friendly alternatives. Using qualitative methods, the research involves in-depth interviews with store managers, content analysis of promotional materials, and observations of in-store communication efforts. According to the research, FamilyMart has a thorough communication strategy that consists of educational initiatives for customers, conspicuous signage, and active participation on social media. These tactics aim to encourage consumers to use reusable bags by raising awareness of the negative environmental effects of plastic bag usage. Effective communication strategies make use of visual aids, customer incentives for program involvement, and compelling and informative messaging. The report also emphasizes how crucial it is to use consistent messages throughout a range of communication channels and how important employee involvement is to achieve the initiative's goals. The findings show that establishing a sustainable culture and obtaining consumer compliance depend heavily on efficient communication. The report ends with actionable suggestions for retailers looking to put similar environmental policies into place. These suggestions emphasize the importance of using multifaceted, transparent, and engaging communication tactics to support long-term, sustainable change.

Abstract

The phenomenon of mixing Indonesian and English in the everyday communication of today’s youth reflects a shift in language practices closely tied to the construction of cultural identity in the era of digital globalization. Generation Z, born into a digital and multicultural environment, utilizes code-mixing not only as a communication tool but also as an expression of lifestyle, a symbol of social affiliation, and a form of identity negotiation between local and global values. This study aims to: (1) analyze the use of code-mixing as a reflection of the identity dynamics of Generation Z; (2) explain the process of identity negotiation through modernity, localization, and resistance to linguistic purism; and (3) illustrate the role of social media in accelerating the normalization of linguistic fusion practices. Using a qualitative approach, this study employs literature review and content analysis of Generation Z’s digital communication on social media. The findings reveal that code-mixing functions as a medium of hybrid identity expression, integrating elements of local and global cultures, and simultaneously serving as a symbol of social status, linguistic creativity, and group solidarity. The study concludes that the practice of code-mixing among Generation Z represents a tangible manifestation of cultural identity fusion, which is dynamic and reflective of contemporary societal changes. These findings contribute to the development of intercultural communication theory and offer valuable insights for formulating language policies that are adaptive to the social dynamics of the younger generation.
